This is my own personal Gun Range. From where I'm set up to the target is 850 yards, if I back up to the main road, I'm up to 2300 yards (can make 3000 if you move the target further up the hill...

I would love a ELR tour of the western US... shoot at all these beautiful long distance ranges... that would be my ideal vacation.

Got 1000 myself, with access to the surrounding ~25k of private land. Plenty of room to stretch my 6.5 Norma

Do you organize tacticle shoots there with friends,clubs or others members here on the hide ?Thats a shit load of land you got there -even 1000 acres anint to be sneezed at especially if you got gun friendly neighbours .Here in NZ farmers keep cutting 10 acres of here or there and selling to life stylers who are ruining country life -OOH im scared of the gun fire crowd who ring the police and have it stopped !arsewads

well if you make it to Norcal, depending on time of year, I can take you to some nice BLM land... it ain't as pretty as 17sniper, but it's scenic in it's own way. I'll take and post pics on our next outing there in a few weeks.

Don't worry, we've got our fair share of antigunners here in oregon, although they're largely confined to the western side of the state.

Definitely thought about the idea, but i use the land as a hunting property. Last i checked, elk aren't too fond of hi-power rifles

Both propertys I shoot run deer and are way smaller than your ranch -seriously the deer run away at shots but dont give a toss pretty much .Maybe the deer get used to it but I encourage you to run a few shoots to help your fellow Tacticle shooters providing you see no detrimental effects on your animals .

I do miss the Mojave desert, spent a bunch of time at the Apex dry lake bed when I lived in Lv. The things that happened in that part of the country during the 50's and 60's was paramount for our current nuclear arsenal and technology. Truly amazing landscape there.

Here's a pic from a steel match out to 900 yards in the Wairarapa, New Zealand. It's on private farm land that one of the club members owns - lots of hills and ridges to shoot from.

Might just need to get your elk acclimated to gunfire! I shoot at a club location that has 600 yards here in Colorado. Those animals couldn't give a hoot about gunfire these days. We had to stop a match one day because a horse had wandered into the middle of the range from a neighboring property. A rabbit continued to sit within 1 foot of the steel we were shooting at on another day, despite repeated hits on the plate. These days the animals I see out there don't even bother looking up when you start shooting.

Anyway, awesome ranch you've got there! I think every 'hider who has seen this thread is probably envious.
 
Desert Marksman 1000 yard comp. red dot is where the target was located. Shot 247/250 with 7x's out of 25 taking 3rd overall in magnum class. Group was 14.5" making it 1.38 MOA

The steel is 14"x22". That's roughly 1x1.5 MOA at 1300 yds. That's like shooting at a 1"x1.5" patch of paper at 100 yds. Sure if you have a 1/2 MOA rifle AND it's properly zeroed for 100 yds, this should be no problem. But try finding your zero on a postage stamp.

I have a 4.5-14 scope and I can still spot hits on it, but I think it's a little narrow, as windage misses can be a little hard to spot. We're thinking of building a 3'x3' gong and painting a target spot on it as we can get out to over a mile in this spot.

Curious what the rest of you are using for LR steel.

At that distance, 3/4" AR Plate should be plenty----you're not using a 50BMG, are you? That might need a little more thickness. You might be able to bet a piece of that kind of plate from a welding shop that does work on mining machinery (maybe from a bucket rebuild or mine truck body repair) if you happen to be "near" any of the mines. I'm not sure where the mines are in MT.
