Give me a brake... Ross Schuler

I know the Ross Schuler brakes have caused controversy in the past and present because of it's close resemblance of the Holland QD brake. But honestly, what hasn't been imitated over the years? Actions, stocks, scope rings...? That's a topic for another discussion.

Anyway I'm just throwing out another Made in the USA alternative for those who want something effective yet very EASY on the wallet.
I sent Ross the dimensions I wanted (OD and bore size), sent him $45 to cover the brake with shipping and BAM! showed up in my mail box literally two days later with those exact dimensions. You could almost say he offers custom brakes because of the accommodation.
The brake only adds about an inch to the barrel with an overall length of about 2.1" or so. The brake is stainless steel and has 3 20deg rear angled side ports and 3 top ports. The machining is very nice as well. Can't really complain at $45 a pop.

I've gotten a few from him and have absolutely no problems at all. Well made brakes that work and when ordered they are usually here before the money even gets to him. I messed up and got the wrong thread pitch for another brake for my sons rifle, he said send it back and we'll trade. I'll keep highly recommending them to anyone that asks.

I love Ross's Brakes, for $45 each they can not be beat! They are very effective and look sharp as well. You can search around and find probably five other people that have similar brakes as well! Those other people just cant touch Ross's prices.....

I contacted him about 3 months ago to tell him that I didn't like the new brakes he was showing on his websight that had a series of 4 vents, instead of the brakes with 3 slots. I told him it just looked a bit much and was not as attractive as his usual 3 slotted brakes. He said he'd think about it. That was all I heard about it. Well, I see he's doing his traditional looking brakes again......'cause here you just bought one!

Yep, gotta love Ross's brakes. Nice to see a quality brake at a reasonable price point. Some of the big name brakes prices have become quite lofty.

I'm running one on my AW308 (standard threads). Turned it down a little and gave it a different profile in a lathe. Other than mine needing paint, they not only look good but are very functional as well. If it matters, it's definitely louder than most other brakes out there.

I have two Ross Brakes, Today I emailed him to see if he could cut me a thread protector, gave him the specs and he replied back within a few hours and said it was already in the mail.

That is actually my website. Ross and I are friends and he does the 3 ports. I do 4 and 5 ports.

I have had 1 brake done by Ross and about a half dozen by Nate. All of them are awesome, and compare favorably with my Holland brake. Plus, both Nate and Ross will contour, thread, and have custom lengths cut to your specifications. At half the price of Holland's, either option can't be beat. Thanks again guys.

I have a 4 port on my .338 LM and the gun is a dream to shoot now. So nice in fact my buddy shot it before (with stock Savage brake) and after and he ordered one the next day for his 700 in .300 win.

I'd say this was the best investment on my rig for $45-50.

You have to shoot out the holes. Kidding. There are holes. The bore diameter is 0.284" as I requested that.

Everyone that ever asks about brakes, this is the information that I give them. I have had several of Ross's brakes on my past rifles. I am looking to build a new competition rifle, and as soon as I get barrel dimensions, I will have either Ross's or Nate's on it. I absolutely love the things, and NOBODY can touch the prices or turn around!!

You have to handle the coatings, no point in him coating somethingnthatnstill needs some machining.

There is one on my 6.5 CM barrel and another in the works so I can trade out the offensive tank gun brake on my REPR. The tank gun brake is effective but blew the hat off one of the range officers that was walking behind me when I happened to touch off a round. Too rude.

The brake on the 6.5 makes that gun into a pussycat. About a little less recoil than my unbraked SR-15.

Ok so I was thinking about adding one of Ross's brakes to my new Savage 10P-SR in 308.
Do these need timed or turned on a lathe by a gunsmith for installation or do you use shims or crush washers?
Stupid question but I had to ask.

It will need to be timed, you can use shims but I think it looks better machined so the brake and barrel look seem-less. I wish my ceracoat matched the factory finish a little better

I ordered some Spikes Tactical shims since I could not find anyone here that would turn the break on a lathe to time it.
Well they would do it but it would be over a month to get to it.

I use a 1/4" bolt, washer, and a nut. Put it in my drill and use a fine file to time mine. So far 3 done and you really can't tell it wasn't done on a lathe

Put one of Ross' brakes on a custom 300n WM-guys at the range cannot believe how little recoil is felt! Truly in the range of a 243.
Timed mine by simply using some 200 grit paper and some elbow grease--swirling motion on the sandpaper and test it on the barrel-works like a charm.

I just shipped the Schuler brake and barreled action to Short Action Customs. For $125, they cut the barrel, threaded it, recrowned it, installed-contoured-timed the brake, and Cerakoted it. It was in their shop maybe 36 hours before being shipped back. Less than 2 weeks door to door.
