Bought a Remington 1903A1 barreled action with bolt as a starting point for a USMC sniper clone.

I'm guessing barrel is military contour that has been bubba'd by soldering on a Lyman front sight to go with the Lyman screw on receiver mount sight.

Does anyone have a drawing showing the barrel profile to see if this will be usable for me in CMP matches, or if I need to get a new one?

All measurement from the front edge of the receiver:
1.135 dia for 1 inch, then tapering to .95 at about 2.75inches, then tapering to .75 at approx 10 inches, and .625 at the muzzle, 23 3/16 from receiver front. Very shallow groove (for rear sight base???) at about 2.95".

Thanks.

Hope it helps?

I get 23 1/4 from edge of receiver to muzzle on an original 03. Might wanna check on the CMP forum , there are some pretty knowledgeable guys there when it comes to 03's.

Jouster.com also has a lot of knowledgeable folks. ChuckinDenver from that site builds 1903A1's (worked on mine) and he could probably help you out quite a bit.

PM me if you'd like his email / phone.

If you need a barrel CMP sells Criterion replacements. There have been some issues getting a rear sight base on them but they will work. Chuck in Denver works on a lot of these.

I too am putting together a M1903A4 clone only mine is going to be an Army version using a Weaver K 2.5 scope. I want it for CMP vintage sniper matches so I'm going with a new barrel from the CMP.

Barrel is shown as shipped so it should be here next week and I can start putting it together.

Has anyone done any precision work with those two-banded 03A3 barrels? just out of curiosity, mine has a 2 banded barrel, shoots pretty darn good for my present purposes, but I was thinking of eventually doing some CMP matches with it.

You mean barrels with 2 groove rifling?

All the 2 groove barrels were made by cut rifling.

We also duplicate the 03 and 03a3 contours.

On the 03 the breech diameter is approx. 1.142" x 1.750" (you get a 2.750" long breech end from us on the blank), The 03 barrel has a sporter type radius contour. At about 4.187" from the breech end it measures about .960 diameter then has a step down/shoulder to .935 diameter then it tapers to the muzzle diameter of approx. .620" at a 24" finish length you get a 27" blank from us. In front of the sight locating slot/bridge. We leave the location slot .750" in diameter approx. .925" long. I suggest that after you thread, chamber and cut the extractor cut you machine away the excess material from the .750" diameter to leave that .100" wide locating slot for the '03 front sight base. You take your timing off of your extractor cut on the breech end is how I do it.

You'll need a indexer in a milling machine so you can index the barrel to mill way the extra material. There is a shop that I know that can do this for you for around a $100 if you want. Just send them your barrel.

I don't think I follow. is cut rifling more or less accurate?

Cut rifling has always been know to produce the most uniform twist vs. other methods. Also bore sizes are more consistent and uniform from one barrel to the next. Also cut rifling doesn't induce an stress into the barrel blank. So when you do secondary machining operations you don't run the risk of the bore being effected going sour etc.... other rifling methods can produce very accurate barrels but cut rifling has been the most consistent performer when it comes to accuracy from barrel to barrel.
