Hi to all,

If you want a 260 that shoots lights out, buy a sacrificial rifle cheap and rebarrel it with a match barrel. Cheapest option is a savage and buy a prefit barrel. You can find a model 10 or 11 for around $500-600, a barrel for $300-400, and upgrade the stock to like a choate tactical for like $300. You'd have a solid rifle that will guaranteed out shoot a factory rifle.

Where you getting a factory 5R in 260 Rem?

Of those choices...Savage LRP. Its a fantastic rifle out of the box.

#2 if it is actually available.

Resale value
Local parts and repair availability
More aftermarket parts availability

My guess is that the savage would probably shoot a bit better though...maybe.

My tikka sporter 260 hammers in the .3s and is 1/2 moa to 6-700 yds. The best trigger of the three also. I have a lrp that is now rebarreled with a brux prefit and while factory was good, it just could not run with the tikka. I am a die hard savage fan through and through, but damn those tikkas shoot and are just so glassy smooth. The lrp can usually be had for 850-925 range. The tikka will be 1423.00, atleast that is what I gave for mine from euro optic.

Also, some people aren't aware that Tikka is made by the same company that makes Sako. As large as both companies are, I would be very surprised if they used barrels from different vendors. I rather suspect that they make their barrels in house, but I'm not sure about that. I do have a TRG22, and it absoutely shoots marvelously. So, hearing that a Tikka shoots great is no surprise.

You can't go wrong with the Savage in the LRP. Lots of people buy them, through on a scope and go win competitions with them.

The tikka tac 308 barrel is same twist, same length, same contour, and has 18x1mm threabarrel...just like the trg22 . If they aren't the same barrel then they are made on a machine next to the trg barrels.

I went the 12LRP route back in Nov and although I don't regret the decision, understand that you may get a hammer or a lemon. The good part about getting the lemon is that you can send the entire rifle back to Savage for warranty work (provided you haven't done anything to void that warranty like remove the barrel or have it threaded for a suppressor/break). if you can't or don't want to go the warranty route you can typically obtain a nice target barrel for $350-$400 from Jim at Northland Shooting Supply. The bad part of getting a lemon is that your eventual planned rebarrel may be far sooner than the expected 2.5k rounds (~300 in my case).

If you do got the Savage LRP route three things that I have found that are beneficial for tactical rifle competitions:

1. Swap out the Accu-trigger for a rifle Basix
2. Order two 10round magazines from Dan at Dark Eagle Customs
3. Consider the Accu-shot mono-pod BT01-QK

On a side note it appears that the LRP is is undergoing a stock change from the H-S Precision Pro-Series 2000 Savage 10FP 12 Target Varmint Tactical Single Shot & Repeater Stocks PSV 102 106 118 to the H-S Precision Pro-Series M24 Vertical Grip Varmint Tactical Savage 10FP 110 DM 12 BBC Stocks - PST 101 114 129.

Hard decision to make.

One one side, the Savage has good accuracy out of the box, although no one has mentioned results
at long range, some complaints on the stock side.

On the other side, Tikka T3 great accuracy period and good stock but about 80% more expensive.

Has someone tried the Savage at 700 to 100 yds?

Appreciate your comments.

I was one of the unfortunate bastards that got a lemon. I have an AI,TRG 22 and a custom Remington. Never had a Savage before and all this talk of how accurate they were so I decided to get a LRP in 6.5 CM. I was shooting Hornady match ammo and it would average 1.5 - 2 moa. Tried everything including changing scope etc and letting a friend shoot it and it was still all over the place. I don't think that is acceptable for this rifle IMO. Was so frustraded I got rid of the pos. Will never waste my money on junk again, should have known better. Sorry for the rant but never again for me. If you decide to go the Savage route, hope you have better luck than I do.

Never occurred to you to call savage? Something was obviously amiss. Savage would have taken care of you. Oh well

I was frustrated I didn't bother. Looking into it there appears to a pattern with these rifles. Several people have had the same issues. Everyone says call Savage. How about checking it before it leaves the factory. If it was an isolated incident I would have been more inclined to send it in. If I had to send it back then I would have had to wait for who knows how long. I was so frustrated I said the hell with it, I could have sent it back and probably should have but oh well. Not pissed off though, life is way too short.

If you don't mind a single shot buy a savage action brand new they're like $500-$600 then get it rebarreled and get a nice stock that fits you.

You were probably ahead in the long term by offloading the rifle. I did call Savage about the issues with my rilfe (misaligned chamber relative to rifling as confirmed by borescope) and they were not overly receptive other than "send it in and we can take a look, but we only guarantee 1MOA". That was until I asked if I could just send the barrel since I had already removed it in preperation of a rebarrel for an upcoming competition. This apperantly voided my warranty along with having had the barrel threaded for my suppressor. Oh well lesson learned. I understand their position, but I wasn't going to be without my competition gun for sevaral weeks or months and I'm disappointed that I made it out of the factory in the first place. When I ordered my replacement barrel from Jim at NSS he was aware that this is a know issue with the 12 LRP's. I think it is a good package to build a semi-custom rifle off of if you don't have the funds to go full custom rifle, but you are rolling the dice on barrel quality as of late. Fortunately there is a wide selection of aftermarket custom barrels available!

Do you mean "with no intentions of re-barreling" for an as is rifle, good out of the box?
Or are there some issues if you want later on to re-barrel once the barrel is worn out?

If you intend to use the factory barrel. I'm not saying it's impossible to rebarrel a tikka or anything, I would just bet that the tikka will shoot better for a 'factory' rifle.

On the other hand, I bought a cheap rem700 ADL and immediately tossed the factory tube.
