Des Arc, AR (aka where?)
I'm having a hard time getting some reloader 17. Are there any good substitutes for it with heavy bullets like the 180s? I've heard power pro 2000 gives similar results as well as cfe 223? Anybody have any powder and velocity numbers with 284 to suggest? I am getting 2870 fps in my 28" 284 with 51.5gr rl17. Thanks for your help

CFE223 and PP2000 will work, but are really too fast, and you must start low and be careful.

H4350, H4831, H4831sc, IMR4350, IMR4831,IMR7828, H100V, RL19, RL22

...is just a small sampling of suitable powders, though none are likely to match the velocity of RL17

I'm using 53gr of H4831sc to get 2800fps out of my 28" .284 with the 180 Hybrids.

Thank you for the replies. I tried 51.5 and 52 grains of rl17 and h4350 saturday, and both of them showed pressure signs. I am going to have to back down to 51.2 or so and leave it there. I can seem to get ahold of the 4831sc right now, although i know it is a popular powder for the 284. I am really looking hard at pp2000mr, as i think i can find some locally. Turbo54, im a newb, so can you explain a little more what you mean that cfe223 and pp2000 are too fast. I understand the concept of fast and slower burning powders, i just assumed that since both of those powders were close to rl17 velocity wise, that they were both slow burning powders like rl17. I may have my concepts wrong tho. Either way, thank you for the help.

PP2000 and CFE223 have appropriate burn speed for heavy bullets in 223 and 308.

H4350, which is on the fast end for heavy bullets in 284, is way way slow for 223 and 308 - even with heavies.

For a given case capacity: smaller bore means slower powder, and bigger bullet means slower powder.

For a given bore size: more case capacity means slower powder.

Ok, i think i understand. Thank you for the help turbo.

Couple guys I shoot with use H4831SC one has 29" and getting 2850. Faster possible but that's where accuracy was.
