something like this: Free Float Jam Nut handguard Spanner Wrench AR15 : Gunsmithing Tools & Gunsmith Supplies at GunBroker.com

but with the curvature to match the radius of an AR10/LR208 float rube jam nut.

I have literally, while watching the movie Orson Welles and Me with my wife and daughter and for almost an hour before, scoured the web for one of these. Nothing.

Seems like a pretty straight-forward thing everyone should be selling, unless there's a special technique for torquing these things up I'm missing somehow.

I put an OEM quad rail on one of my DPMS carbines a few months back and used a hammer and chisel to whack the jam nut into place.

I'd like to use a little finesse on the one on my DPMS REPR and get it back on with something closer to the "right" amount of torque, but damn, you'd think with all the AR10/LR308/KAC25 guns out there someone would have one of these listed as an accessory, or tool.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance.

I messed with one tht was a piece of shit. I cant remember the brand but it was from sportsmans warehouse I think. it scratched the FF rail. so I put a YHM bipod adapter on the upper receiver rail and FF rail to hold in place then took the edge of a spare piece of wood in the groove and a hammer. to tighten. no maring and its held in place perfect.

Enco.com
You will find what is known as a pin spanner or gland nut wrench. Or if all else fails strap wrench will work. The nut is likely Loctited.

ENCO is an automation solutions company (kind of electronics that run the machinery in the manufacturing plant at the end of the first Terminator movie, I think), but the name "Pin spanner" was helpful. Found this: Armstrong 34-305 1-1/4-3-Inch Adjustable Hook Spanner Wrench - Amazon.com

I've already got a couple hundred invested in AR-specific tools, what's another $30?

Thanks, everyone.

I use one that I got from PRI several years ago. Mine is a combo wrench that attached to my torque wrench (or any 3/8" or 1/2" drive wrench for that matter) that can be used for both the A2 and A4 type barrel nuts. See here:

Combo: Precision Reflex - Product Detail - Armalite 308 Combo barrel nut wrench - $25.50

A4/Flattop ONLY: Precision Reflex - Product Detail - Barrel Nut Torq Wrench for AR10 - $19.50

DSGArms, 762SASS, MidwayUSA, Brownells, and others routinely carry those wrenches as well, so if you don't go direct from PRI, those are a couple good bets for you. Good luck!

ETA: I just re-read your post and realize that you may be looking for a non-Armalite pattern tool as well. PRI has those too as seen here for use on DPMS/LR-308/KAC pattern rifles:

Precision Reflex - Product Detail - DPMS / KAC 308 Barrel Nut Torq Wrench - $25.50

It's not for the BARREL nut, but for the outer ring JAM nut (has notches/grooves every 3/4 inch or so) that locks up the free float tube to the nut.

The AR 15 styles are everywhere, I'm not so sure the radius is going to match up with the larger AR 10 jam nut.

Like I said, I think I found what I'm looking for with an Armstrong or Stanley tool.

Thanks again.

I must reapeat 1000 times aloud..."My reading comprehension skills need improvement!!" ;)

Sorry about that goof, normbal.

Here is a link to a pretty good one that is more or less "universal" for 99% of all FF tubes/jam nuts out there (up to 3" in dia.) and can be used for your jam nut purposes as well as a variety of other applications too:

Danaher Armstrong 34-305 1-1/4-3-Inch Adjustable Hook Spanner Wrench - Tools - Wrenches - All Open Stock Wrenches

Sears (and various other places) sell multiple brands/models...just be sure you get one that will get you the outside diameter range you need for the job. A little blue painters tape over the area isn't a bad idea either as stuff happens. ;) The only issue you may have is the relative width of the adjustable hook itself which is over 3/8" on most models which you might have to shave/machine down to fit the DPMS nut properly...the YHM combo wrench is the same way though as it is built specifically for the YHM handguard's nut which is larger than the stock DPMS nut if memory serves. Sorry again for the "goof" before.

Good luck!

The link I posted is for a Jam nut as well as a barrel nut.

My apologies. I DID see that tool listed elsewhere, also read about the tab breaking off one. I have no use for the OTHER end of the tool, already owning several barrel nut wrenches specific to AR15s, and DPMS' AR10/LR308.

Thanks.

I'm very sorry but Enco is in fact a machine tool supply retailer. This set will cover ANY slotted jamb nut you will ever encounter. Hell I even use a pin spanner on BA-50 barrel nuts that I picked up from Enco
Look here: Enco - Guaranteed Lowest Prices on Machinery, Tools and Shop Supplies

You will have to grind the hook a tad to get into shallow slots like forearms use and pad the bearing surface of the wrench.

Dude. Beg to differ. The FIRST link you gave me "enco.com" is this" ENCO Systems, World Class Provider of Radio Automation, Audio Delivery for TV and Solutions for Broadcasters - Home Exactly what I said it is.

Your second link USE-enco.com is different.

Got it covered. Thanks for all the help, folks.

No worries man, just thought you may have overlooked it.
In my case I marred up the jam nut pretty bad, before I gave up and took it to a gunsmith
The smoke wrench (torch) was the key, the gunsmith ruined about 50 bucks worth of his tools
before he figured it out
