I've been trying to decide between the two. My hang up is in north dakota I can't use battery illumination. Going to be installing on either fn pbr xp or mrc model 1999 .30-06 if that would make a difference.

I'm not sure if you found a scope yet but I just bought a 3x9 accupoint with green mil dot and it is by far my favorite scope. The glass is exceptional and the illumination is perfect with no need for batteries.
In my experience the Trijicon has better glass and are remarkably light. I can see the dual illumination being useful in a hunting application, too.

My experience --- Both are nice, try before you buy if able. ask around. either way I think you'll win
Trijicon TR24 - no batteries, no blinking reticle, good glass, capped turrets, mid weight, very open field of view, Spendy,
PST 1-4 - good glass, battery restriction, choice of exposed or covered turrets, nice reticle, lit reticle function has had issues (blinking during recoil, lit mechanism not stellar IMO), PRICE.
Going beyond the 1-4x, the PSTs really shocked me with glass clarity for the price. CS is stellar as well. Had a 3-9x Accupoint and that was nice as well with good glass, but the PST won with shock factor I think.

If you do decide to go with the Trijicon you will then have the reticle dilemma. I was very tempted to try the triangle but ended up going with the green mil dot since mine is used only for hunting.
I was just at Cabelas and looked through both of them. I have to say the Trijicon looks to have better glass overall.
I have a Triji 3-9x40 Green MIL-DOT and I think it is pretty much the perfect low light hunting scope. Great glass, not too heavy, illumination is just right without needing a battery. I like Vortex products but the Accupoint line has better glass than the PST line in my opinion.
No experience with Vortex but after owning two Trijicon 5-20's and a fixed 10X56 I can say they are definitely reliable, rugged scopes.
Tried the 10x, it was very bright and clear BUT really hated not having parallax adjustment. I think it needs it.
The 5-20x50 models have been great. The mil-dot crosshairs are a little thick but the trade off is they don't get lost in landscape. I recommend choosing green illumination because it's much stronger and the amber is very faint. Only the center of the mil-dot is illuminated and the dot is very small. Actual size is much smaller than the photos on the Trijicon website.
