It is obvious that you guys spent a lot of time working out the details on this scope project both in the scope design and the reticle. I have spent a decent amount of time thinking about what I would build if I could build a hunting scope and and this little package checks off most of my boxes! BRAVO!! I realize pleasing the masses becomes impossible on a project like this but a couple thoughts from one guy's perspective.
One of the reasons I asked what the final power range ended up being was because, like another gent above, I am concerned about the eye-box and overall view from the scope on high power. I agree with the premise that 12-15x is all that is needed for a hunting scope but there are very few scopes that pull off the same kind of clarity and comfortable eye-box at high power as they do at low to mid. It was in this regard that I was hoping that it may still end up on the 3.5-21 platform of which I have been very happy with the mid power range performance. Obviously if these things are non issues on this scope then all is well but it is certainly worth verifying IMO.
Overall, I love the reticle for my style of hunting. I would personally add the numeric designations to both sides of the main horizontal windage line. I understand the need to reduce clutter but only having them on the right side doesn't speed up finding the proper wind hold or help to reduce error on the left side, which is the whole concept to having them to begin with.
I would also eliminate everything above the top of the donut to open up the entire top of the scope for viewing. This would still give you holds up to 2 MIL above the center for those that zero at 200+ yards but would clear up the top for spotting, judging size, etc.

A lot of the hunters that complain about reticle thickness are truly going extreme long range (over 1500). That, to me, is a small subsection of hunters with plenty of options already available. Weight and even FFP vs SFP is virtually a non issue for that application. I think reticle subtension gets way overhyped in the long range hunting discussion, at least as far as hunting pertains to 97% of us.
But I bet there are a lot of dedicated tactical and competition shooters who wouldn't mind a few more lightweight options and if these kind of rifles keep winning comps we might see a few more of those 17 pounders in the for sale section.

To those of you who have used both Remington and Norma 300 SAUM brass for forming 6.5 SAUM cases, have you had to reduce your charge at all using the Norma brass?
I weighed some Remington brass and came up with about 218 grains per piece; whereas, the Norma brass was about 229 grains. I'm assuming the Norma brass has thicker walls, thus slightly decreased case capacity.

No, the only difference I found is that the 300SAUM brass is slightly shorter and probably will never have to be trimmed to length.

In my 7/300 and 7saum I get stiff bolt lift when running Nosler/Norma brass over Rem/Win brass with same load. Have to drop it a .5 to a full grain to not hit pressure. I think the difference is that I am right at max pressure to start with. With the 6.5 saum they are not on the edge.
Should be two more weeks and my 6.5 saum will be here. Scott I stole your camo design I liked it so much. You have great taste. Have the necks turned on Nosler brass, and 62g of H1000 under the Berger 130vld's ready to start out with. Sounds like I just need to get a bullet pointer now.

Nope. I ordered a few boxes at lunch today and they only shipped one. The rest were cancelled per my instructions on the order. Oh well. I at least have one box on the way.

Here's George's elk he shot last fall in Montana. The shot was 300+ yards. 130gr pointed hunting vld. Complete pass through. She took about three steps and fell over.

So I'm starting to procure all the pieces for a 6.5 SAUM build and having followed this thread for a long time I wanted to make sure I had all the correct info for the key components:
PTG Reamer 6.5-4S (original reamer)
APA bottom metal with Accurate mags, 300 WSM mag
24" barrel or longer with 1 in 8.7 twist
.300 RSAUM or 7mm RSAUM brass
130gr Bergers over ~61.0gr of H1000
I recall a post by George recently stating that they had changed the reamer a smidge in the throat length dimension. I do not recall him provinding an updated reamer name, if the name did indeed change. Thanks in advance for all the great info in this thread. I'm REALLY looking forward to adding a 6.5 SAUM to my 6.5 collection.
The Current Reamer that PTG Sells is the correct reamer.

What is the overall cartridge length with the 140 any ideas.will they run I a AI Mags or is there some modification needed
You will need to have that front plate removed to take advantage of the proper length of the cartridge. Accurate Mag is your best bet for a WSM style mag with no plate in it.
How about Alpha mags? I have 2.980 inches in the mag, but how do they feed?
I mostly run the Alpha Mags. They do great.
You would need to open up the feed lips and remove the front plate that limits the OAL. Instead of doing all that buy an Accurate Mag or Alpha Mag.
Im looking forward to the scope. I am just wondering, why didnt you choice to build it off the 2.5-16x 44mm 30mm scope? I have one currently and with small mil knobs, and that ret you made it would be HELL OF A HUNTING SCOPE. I use the 2.5-16 on my 375R, the 2.5 is super nice for close shots and Its nice to be able to dial up.
I think the desire was for a FFP scope.

They don't make a 2.5x16 FFP, the entire scope is different its not just a 3x12 FFP with a new knob. The tube is a whole new design. The glass inside is different is has an incredible eye box real easy to get on fast. Very crisp. The eyepiece housing was the same as the current 3x12. But Rev 2 is changing that. The 3x12 was the best choice to start from its probably the most common power we all use while hunting, It looks like they will do a 4-16 with all the same features for 2015. So the guys that think they need more power will get it eventually.

The guys willing to Test Drive these will have to wait a little, Rev2 Prototypes will be ready in December, There are only 3 in the world right now and they are already all out being tested. Pat and I will be shooting more deer any coyotes in late November with one as well.
I have seen quite a few animals hit with the 139 Scenar. All lasered through with minimal expansion. I would not recommend this bullet for hunting at all. The 140 A-max on the other hand does very well. Granted, all of these shots were with Creedmoor speeds, and not SAUM.
