52gr SMK's blowing up mid air at 10y

Just out of curiosity, could improper barrel cleaning/breakin technique damage a barrel in such a way as to render it a bullet-destroyer?

if you use sand to clean your guns, mabey...

Get some 52s off a buddy from a different lot number

i have zero interest in shooting 52's.. the ONLY reason i even loaded them, was i "had" a box... and i needed a quick under 200y load for 1 match... i have no plans on ever buying more...

1 have 3 223's, all they normaly shoot is 53-60gr vmax, 55fmj, 69... i do have a few odd boxes of 75/40/50 laying around... but not what i would normaly load

I would say that a thinner jacket will compress more readily without deformation.
The thicker jacket creates more friction to engage into the rifling and a flaw could create jacket failure.

You're clearly not putting the rpms on the bullet that the manufacturer warning is intended to address.
Also I'm curious how different ogives of the two bullets are and how they interact with the throat of your rifle.

I have no idea who answered the email and suggested that 100 rounds worth of fouling was enough to cause bullet failure, but I'm just (seriously) hoping it wasn't someone I hired. Ridiculous statement on its face, and makes me question any other information that they may have passed on.

Beyond that, Dave, you're absolutely right. I'm out.

Okay, video will be up later I have time but I just shot test using the old lot of 52's vs the brand new 52, some of the brand new 52's popped mid air the old lot shot perfect

"Okay, send me the remainder and we’ll test them for you and if they are bad we’ll replace them.
I will say this however, 100 shots through a barrel without cleaning is definitely enough to foul it to the point of bullet failure.

I've run thousands of 52 grain SMKs through 7, 8, and 9 twist guns. 52 grn SMK and 25 grains H335 has been a standard load setup on one of my Dillon 550s for over a decade. Never had a single issue. Run a bunch through multiple WOA 16",18" barrels that are 7 twisters.

Have to agree. Does not sound like a projectile issue. More like a rifle one.

I believe there are a number of possibilities causing your bullet blow up.

It's entirely possible you got a bad lot of 52 grainers

It's entirely possible that your rifle bore was fairly rough, either by manufacture or fouling

It's entirely possible Sierra would make it right with you, either way, by contacting them and awaiting a solution before publicly ridiculing them when you may not have a true diagnosis of the problem.

It's interesting that you worked up load data on your faster 20" 1-8 and had no ill effects apparent at that time. Scrub the shit out of your barrel and see if that helps, then you've removed 1 of the 3 variables.

Please do post your findings, I do know my wife's daniel defense bore was rough as hell until the 1000 round realm...but probably unrelated to your event, of course.

Ring....how many lands does your barrel have? I've heard a little stint on a forum about a 3 land barrel cutting jackets on smaller bullets spinning them as fast as you are...just a thought.
