New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

It's a long action cartridge too, no thanks!

"The 26 Nosler® case is non-belted, thus headspaced off of the shoulder to further enhance accuracy. The “26” also utilizes a standard (30-06) length action meaning shorter bolt-throw and lighter weight than magnum length actions"

You should start a new thread and not booger this one up with Nosler trying to jump on the band wagon.

Sendero Man called in the first one in 30 seconds and i finally got on him at 200 yards, the second one was 1300 yds out, so we got to the next ridge line and I got her at 300 yds, my first coyote kills ever, Scott is the man!

6.5 SAUM works on coyotes too!

Josh was prone for 30 minutes in -12 F snow waiting for the deer to stand at 510 yards, once the deer stood, boom, DRT!!

Thought I would share what I have found out so far. Gun specs.

I started with with the COAL of 2.900 that everyone was saying was working with the Berger 130 vld's. I decided to start lower then the recommended 63g of H1000. I used Nosler brass with necks turned down to 14 thous, CCI-CBR2 primers, 62g H1000. Fired the first shot and got lots of pressure signs, stuff bolt lift, and flat primers. Cleaned then fired two more shots. Still had pressure but not as bad. I did have a neck split on a case. When I chambered the rounds I could tell the bullet was being jammed hard into the lands. I decided to keep firing and cleaning to break in the barrel for the first 10-15 rounds. I was using the Magnetospeed chronograph. First shot went 3234fps, low was 3182, and ave was 3206 over 10 shoots. Not sure how they are getting 3250fps with not pressure. Groups where terrible. I only loaded up 20 rounds with 62g H1000 COAL of 2.900 for break-in. Went home and measured the throat. Loaded a few rounds up with different seating depths, but keeping the 62g H1000. Here is the target with the different seating depths using Hornady OAL gauge. Top target is 2.900 COAL

Looks like I was on the right track. Last group was looking better, and no more pressure signs. Went and loaded some more rounds up at 61.5 62, and 62.5 at 2.880 COAL. Did not have a lot of time the next time I went shooting. It was blowing snow and cold but things are looking better.
Four shots 62g H1000 2.880 COAL

Four shots 62.5 H1000 2.880 COAL

Now I have 50 rounds of fire formed brass I am going to load up 62.5g H1000 2.888-2.830 and take it out to 1000 yards with the Magnetospeed and see how things do. Hope this help you guys just getting your guns with reamers of .081 shooting the Berger 130 vld's

Skyking, 2 things are going on. One you already figured out. The .081 FB is the new reamer and the OAL should be 2.870 -2.880.

The first reamer was .120 FB and was long for 140 Hybrids and 140 JLK's. you should point some 140 hybrids and try them!!!!

Second the Norma and Nosler Brass are softer and have 3.5 gr less capacity. That along with the wrong OAL is where your pressure spiked.

Try 140 Hybrids at 2.925 you will like

When is someone going to try to 160 Matrix? Interested to see if the twist rate is fast enough and how velocity and accuracy is.

Scot

Like the paint on your rifle Josh, good shooting and nice deer.

The pics are great as usual....beautiful country.

George, if I send in all the parts except for a barrel, what kind of wait time would I be looking at? I have a GAP in 7wsm I would like to think of converting to the 6.5.

I've been following this thread for awhile and must admit, I'm more than impressed. I don't get too excited or impressed very often but, this cartridge is doing it for me. I ordered the .296" Nk, .081"FB reamer the other day because of it. I built 6.5 Weatherby Mag for a client that uses the 257 Wby case necked up. It runs the 140's at 3,200 but, with 72 grains of H1000. I've been intrigued with the high velocity 6.5's for a while and wanted to build one but, felt the 6.5Wby would be a barrel burner for sure.

I'm going to build one of these in a light weight SA and run 140/130 Bergers. If anyone is wanting a hot rod 6.5, this is it by far. Pick up your phone and call George @ GAP now to get in line.

George, Pat and Sendero Man have been more than gracious with their information and willingness to share. To me, that speeks volumes. If I didn't build my own rifles I'd be placing an order with George today.

wnroscoe, sent you a pm but your box is full. Interested in your rifle specs, etc.

George I ordered one last week from you, my question is will you be getting some brass with the correct head stamp like you have for other calibers? Or should I order now from C. Creek? PS I didnt specify what neck I wanted so should i assume the rifle will be for a Turn neck?

6.5 SAUM "Crusader"

Missouri Rifle Season/2013: Slow season not a lot of deer to choose from. I did manage to get my kids all bucks, but was tough...

2 of my 3 kids used the 6.5 SAUM "Crusader" to take bucks. My 12 year old, she took a forkhorn at 205 yds with 130 VLD "unpointed" high shoulder shot. Everything
disintergrated. exit wound was shrapnel exiting . My 10 year old boy took an 8 pt at 351 yds with 130 VLD "unpointed". It was hard getting him set up and I dialed .2 mils
more and he spined him the first shot, 2nd shot he held on shoulder and hit high shoulder but DRT. 130 just desintegrated everything in the high shoulder.

My buck: I waited for the Leica to pick him up about 835 yds (yes need Terrapin). I dialed everything in at 795 yds with 6 mph 7:30 wind with a 140 VLD unpointed.
I clipped the front shoulder going in and exited behind the offside shoulder (golf ball size exit). I dropped him right there, after 30 seconds he got to his feet and
ran 20 yds and collapsed. His lungs and some veins were hanging out the golf ball size exit hole (SABOT round).
6.5 SAUM Awesome round. It done everything my 260 Crusader did before being "punched out" to 6.5 SAUM, now it
"just does it better".
Pics below:

Gracey: 205 yds forkhorn (Missouri Youth Season)

Gradey with older sister Gabbey: 8 pt 351 yds (Missouri Rifle Season)

My buck: 9pt/ 795 yds:

Just sell me the damn H1000 you bought last week from KG&A. ;)

Great looking buck!

Just a friendly suggestion: Quit drinking the 5 hour Energy - Red Bull - Coffee cocktails. It gives you a crazed look in the pictures.

George do you make any powder charge changes due to the case capacity with Norma or Nosler brass?

Forgive me if this has been answered, but why the dbm on a hunting rifle, especially if it only holds 3 rounds? You can get three rounds in a bdl style bottom metal.

Has anyone built one off a lowly Remington action yet? When I burn out the barrel in my 308 Im seriously considering getting it rebarreled in this cartridge. Should only need a ptg magnum bolt right?

I did. Mine was a WSM donor. I used a PTG bolt on this rifle, because I robbed the original bolt for another project. Runs like a champ!

Thanks. I ordered up a reamer and barrel to try this on my Stiller lightweight rifle with the ptg canoe style bottom metal. It's currently a 300 wsm that feeds fine so I'm curious how the 6.5saum will feed. There's a dall sheep somewhere near by that has only about 9 months to live. ;-). Next will be a GAP build!!!

Built one off a Remington 700 with the factory bolt. Upgrade the extractor and you are good to go. Pretty simple operation.

Very nice, looks like you went with PTG bottom metal as well. Which model and mag are you using?

Oh I know its fairly straight forward, short action with a magnum bolt face, but it just seems like everyones rifles are off the custom actions. Guessing by upgraded extractor you mean an M16? As much as Id love to call up George and order a 4500 dollar rifle from him its just not in the cards for me any time soon with everything else I want to get and two young boys at the house. I figure I can pick up a pawn shop special or rebarrel my 308 and be into the complete gun for 2Kish with a take off HS precision stock. Ive been very happy with my 5R 308 and 300WM with a few mods done. Theyre not as nice as what George turns out by any means but they do alright enough for my semi decent shooting ass.

Theres a spot on my lease where I can reach out to 1200ish yards and this would be the ticket along with the new Bushnell scope.

That is about the most economical way to do it. Run a Rem700 action, get it trued up, new barrel and upgrade the extractor to an M16 type. If you already have the Remington action and want to move up to the 6.5 SAUM your only option is to get a magnum PTG bolt and have it fitted properly.

1slow, I did a 'budget build' 6.5. Started with a Rem700 SPS in 300WSM as a donor and my friend did the chamber work. Should be arriving today, I'll put some pics up...

I am having GAP build my 6.5 SAUM off of a 700 w a PTG bolt. Just another 4 months and my stock will arrive. Part of the joys of being left handed. For a dedicated hunting rig, the short bolt trow of one of the Browning Abolts or a model 70 with the extra mag length sounds like cheap utility.

George can you currently chamber this for longer actions?

Wouldn't an even less expensive option bet to buy a savage magnum and get a barrel and screw it on?

I believe the Winchester model 70 WSM factory mag box allows a 2.95" round. That might be a lower budget option for the CRF hunting crowd.
