How to best carry ammo in the field

What are people using for carrying a hundred or so rounds on them?

I've been using the MTM flip top boxes, but if they don't stay level, spent cases get all over the place. For my 223 bolt gun, I've thought about using a pmag just for storage, but my OAL is too long for that. I've got a 6.5 Creedmoor on the way, too, and am looking for suggestions for taking more than a few rounds out into the field (for a match or varmints).

Thanks.

I use a Sears Craftsman 18" cantilever box for my field trips. I can bring a few hunderd rounds and then chuck the empties in the same box. Keeping a few calibers separate and other tools and goodies close.

Hmm, I've already got a range bag and an eberlestock pack. I was thinking something where the rounds wouldn't be loose and rattle around. I've thought about adding a layer of soft foam in the top of the MTM boxes I'm using now, but figured I'd ask if there's something better out there.

I just use the plastic Federal sleeves that the FGMM comes in. you can tie them to whatever you need, free with the ammo and last for a long time.

I use the plastic Federal ammo holders that come with there ammo, each holds 10 rounds, best of all there free, go dumpster diving at the range, 223 are hard to come by, but the 308 ones are usually there.

Same as 0311 Hesco and 427 Cobra. They hold them quietly, securely, and they're free. I also keep shell holders on the stock pack full.

I have this from Tab Gear:

Triad Tactical, Inc.*::*TAB Gear*::*TAB Gear Silent Ammo Carrier

On my Eberlestock pack. I'm really happy with it and since I'm zip lock bagged obsessed, I have a folded one inside to store fired brass.

I take any rounds that I need to carry and wrap them in 5 packs with tin foil as that's the number of rounds my mag holds. I can form fit as needed and they don't clatter around. Wrap a few packs together with rubber bands and then find places for em in my pack. Wrap the spent cases back in the foil and put it back in my pack. Very little room needed or added weight.

You will still need to buy the ammo cards from Stu at redtac as he makes them. Also, I would buy the pouches from Grand River Tactical rather than the imitator. Same goes with vests.

Not really, you can buy all his stuff from his site and the stuff is as close to indestructible as you can get...

For 5.56/.223 This stock pack is designed with loops to fit 223/5.56 cartridges, and is functionally similar to the one below. It can hold several loaded USGI strippers, and store recovered/empty strippers, as well as a USGI mag/stripper loader. I like it for my Mossberg MVP predator, which uses USGI 5.56/.223 magazines

Try not to laugh too hard, but this will hold a big bunch of loaded USGI 5.56/223 strippers, and 3-clip cardboard sleeves will make inserting and removing the strippers easier. If the pockets on the vest won't accept the 3 strip cardboards (they're cotton and they do shrink), these should work OK for two strippers each. I'm guessing the pouches could also hold 10rd mags.

For my three Mosin-Nagant 91/30's, I use this stock pack to hold four 5rd strippers of x54R and 5 individual rounds in the loops. Used/empty strippers can be recovered to store in the pack.

This arrangement also allows me to adjust my comb height by sticking strips of stick-on neoprene foam to the underside of the stock pack. It easily fits over the Limbsaver recoil pad I use to add LOP and to quite effectively attenuate the 91/30's respectable recoil.

If/when I take to the field under conditions where 25rd are not enough, I can/could carry 100rd in strippers, two strippers to the pouch in one of these M1923 ammo belts for the M1903/M1.

This version appears to be an update to the original Garand ammo belt.

Here's the full selection of Garand ammo gear.

Many of these options get the ammo carrier out of the hands, leaving them free to do other tasks.

I use some ammo pouches from Sage Flat shooters in Montana. They all hold 30 rounds very neatly, They don't rattle around, and 100 rounds takes up less space them two 50 round MTM boxes. Its a win win

I use the plastic cards norma usa uses. they hold 10rds or you can break them in half to hold 5 a piece. stack thin to take up little room. when I hit the woods to hunt, I take 2 of the 5 rounders. 1 I load in the gun then throw the other in my pocket.

I use a large tackle box from plano, or the heavy duty canvas range bag which easily carries 200 rds and mags as well.

Triad Tactical Rifle Ammo Pouch (RAP)

The RAP is sized to hold twenty round of rifle ammo.

The standard size will hold 223Rem, 260Rem, 308Win, 6.5x284 and up to 30-06(or other similar sized rounds).
The magnum size will hold 30-06, 300WM and 338LM(or other similar sized rounds).

The bullet tips are covered by a strip of webbing to keep them protected. When folded, the RAP is approximately 4"x7".

Each of the fold out side panels has a clear window that is 3" wide and 7" tall. This area can be used to carry ballistic data, comms info, range cards or anything else that you might need quick access to while in a shooting position (favorite carry-out menu!).

The pouches can also be attached to older style ALICE gear or be used on a belt.

This is a proprietary product of Triad Tactical, manufactured in the USA.

I use the MTM deluxe 100 round boxes. If you get the optional foam pad for the lid the empties won't come out of the holes.

Shooterken,

The comment from 19Scout77 goes back more than a year ago. Looking at the Skullmonkey site now, it does appears that they are now making a copy/version of the GRT Ammo Card Pouch and the Red Tac Gear ammo pouch.

Not thread bashing, just helping the OP reach the end of his search for options for carrying ammo.

Nice Hesco, I do the exact same thing. They hold just as many as my magazines hold and they stop the rounds from rattling around. They also protect the tip of the bullet (meplat) which is important for long range shooting. I have had some for many years and they continue to hold the rounds securely. I love em.

I'd go with the TRIAD RAP. I have a couple of the ammo burrito's from John at 8541 but he is not making them currently. Triad's work nicely.

I use the Triad RAP (ammo burrito). Totally love it. Replaced all my ammo cards. Nothing else to add ;)

I understand Triad however it seems that a lot of companies make things that look and function like something someone else makes, GRT make a scope cover that looks like Blackhawks, most everyone makes shooting bags/rests that resemble someone else whether it's a cube, triangle or whatever the flavor of the day is. hell, I'm not even sure who makes what at this point however that doesn't make them bad either way. I happen to like Skullmonkey gear so I was putting in my .02 worth for the op.

I have the FGMM plastic inserts - and like them - not sure what norma uses - can someone post a picture?

they work great. best part is that the rounds snap in place and cannot come out until you push them out from the bottom.

I like these a lot. Keeps the tips safe, they are quiet, you can drop several in a bag or mount them if you prefer. Nothing bad to say about these!

I prefer 8541's design. I've a few and will happily buy more once (if?) he starts making them again. I guess if doesn't, than I'll be ordering from Sage.

I usually carry a full mag in my rifle and two more on my belt.

If I need to carry more I just dump them in a pocket on my ruck. I find the MTM boxes and thee like rattle and I cant be bothered putting the shells in them anyway.

On the topic of copying gear-About 20+ years ago, Mike Noell (Blackhawk founder) opening stated he was copying everything Eagle made and would put them out of business. Well, years later after he sold and whoever purchased that ended up owning Eagle. Oddly enough He started out in a shop off of London Bridge road. London Bridge Trading was originally on London Bridge Rd, moved to Bonney, then VBB and now has been on LB Rd for some time. There's only so many ways to make the same thing

Some useless Sat morning info!

A small company call Vel-Tye made these for me. I originally used them for the AI mag(.308 small and .300wm large) I used the insert from Hornady ammunition and cut them to fit. 30-06 in the large and .308 in the small. They work great for the hinged floorplate guns and are belt mountable. The insert was an after thought and they fit tight, will not come out unless assisted-haven't tried.
Give Harvey or Steve a call

^--- Send a PM to softcock. He's made (and sold here) many suppressor pouches, specialty holsters, and ammo pouches. I have one of his ammo pouches, and it does a great job protecting 20 rounds of .308. It's currently buried in my closet, but think cordura-checkbook-meets-wallet with elastic webbing for each round and a "shark tab" to secure it. Not as compact as the FGMM inserts, but robust-yet-streamlined. Plastic sheet inserts protect the rounds from being crushed in a bag.

If he's still producing stuff, I'd bet he can make something more along the lines of what you want... I'm sure he has pictures of past products, too.

Quality stuff.

Layton using tinfoil could potentially give away a position. I'm a newbie her but not in the world of shiny stuff.

oh hell, that was improvised from what I had available at the time and it worked so I stuck with it. I'm not hiding from anything that can shoot back. lol

edt: It started when I was trying to find a way to carry extra shells for my .44 without them clanging around on a deer/hog hunt way way back.
