F T/R Competition A little wife & rifle dilemma

Ok over the last year or so I've been talking/thinking about getting into more precision longer range shooting, out to 600yds is what is currently available to me at our range. After watching several matches & shooting a handful of the competitors rifles I'd been trying to decide between a Savage .308win or a 6.5 Creedmoor. I was leaning toward the .308 at first since I already had dies, brass, & some bullets etc... Well I then changed my mind & decided to go w/the Savage 6.5 Creedmoor 12lrp.

Here's where my dilemma/problem comes in. I came home last week & my wife had a surprise waiting for me. She had purchased me a Savage model 10fcp .308 w/the HS Precision stock. Wow nice suprise, great wife.
After seeing what she paid for the rifle a few days later, it was more expensive than the Creedmoor I'd been eyeing by about $55-85 depending on where you look.

So I'm asking for an opinion on what you guys would do:
Keep the rifle she bought me & be happy or try to sell it & buy the Creedmoor? (The model 10 is unfired BNIB)

I plan on shooting mainly 600yds & maybe entering a competition at some point after getting either of the rifles/load dialed in. I already have my scope, biopod, rings, w/1pc.rail on the way. She had also purchased a rail but they sold her the wrong one, it was for a L/A so I had to return it & order the correct rail.
Anyway just looking for advice or opinions I guess.

This is so easy, I can't believe you're even asking the question.

Take the rifle your wife gave you and simply forget about the 6.5 Creedmoor.

This serves two purposes, you decide which one is the critical one for you.

a) Makes your wife happy and promotes harmony at home.
b) You already have all the stuff for the .308 and you could get into F-TR competitions with that rifle.
 
If you want to shoot F class, I would recommend keeping the .308, so you can shoot in F-TR off of a bipod. If you get the 6.5 Creedmoor, it will put you in F-Open, and you will have to compete with the custom rifles with heavy, expensive front rests. If you don't care about winning, either will be fun to shoot. I have a Savage 10 Predator Hunter Max-1 in 6.5 Creedmoor and love the gun. I may take it to a local match and shoot it with a bipod just to see what it can do.
 
Keep the rifle and definitely keep the wife ! That's pretty awesome of her.
The .308 will do great at 600 and if you want to go for more speed and less elevation load up the 155's to see if your rifle likes them.
Down the road if you find your tired of the .308 or feel you need the Creedmoore order up the tools and a new barrel and you have the best of both worlds.
 
Get rid of your wife and get the gun you want, she should hav known what you were thinking, my wife knows everything I am thinking.

If thats not an option stick with the 308, its a great gun, I have the 10 FP sitting in a Mcrees, shoot the hell out of it, once worn out get whatever caliber you want. Buy the wife something nice, she seems to like you.
 
WISH my wife would buy me cool stuff. Keep the 308. just shot at my first match and during the comp someone shooting dropped a round couldn't find it and another competitor handed him a round. there were a few 6.5s in the competition but many more 308s. many more options with the 308. ballistics are so dam close why bother with the 6.5.
 
Keep the rifle your wife got you. Above everything else, that was an awesome thing for your wife to do. That shows she really pays attention to what you are interested in. Enough with the counseling.

Shoot the barrel out, and rebarrel to the caliber you want, or buy another rifle later on. Either way, I'm a firm believer that everyone needs at least one .308.
 
You need to keep what the wife bought you... that is freakin awesome!! The next problem is, why haven't we seen the wife or the rifle??

Keep the rifle....love the wife - she's a good one if she got you that out of the blue! Learn to shoot a 308 and master it. Save your funds for the tools and new 6.5 barrel....swap barrels when it's time. Everyone's happy..... :)

You risk having her never buy you another rifle!
Tell her everyday how much you like the rifle.
She may just buy you another.
You should be able to get a good price on the Creedmoor as it is NIB>

I just told my wife about this, showed her the thread, asked why she doesn't buy me rifles, she told me to wake up, you have so many there is no room to store them anymore. So I asked for more ammo, powder, and components.

I guess what got me thinking about weather to sell was after last weekend's state match & most were shooting some for of 6mm's & a couple of 6.5's. I've shot a friends bone stock 6.5 & was impressed. But I've also shot
I've got a .308 that I've shot some on the 600yd, it's an AR-10 DPMS LRT-SASS. But this is my first heavy barrel bolt rifle & wanted to get it right the first try.
Have had a few std. hunting bolt guns that I've sold since I quit hunting. Well all but the Savage .223 & a couple rimfire Savages .22lr/.17HMR

*As far as whoever suggested rebarreling right away that's not an option. Funds are not there after just buying a scope, so it's either keep or sell to get the other rifle.
*I'll get some pics posted, I was going to wait until I had it all put together but if you want to see a naked rifle that's not a problem. It's sitting alone in the factory box, haven't even put it in the safe yet. Hopefully my rail will be in tomorrow or Friday. You'd figure the gun shop selling the gun would have known the difference in a S/A vs a L/A!

Who's money did she use to buy the rifle with? Yours or hers? Well come to think of it what yours is hers so all she did was give you a little of it back. Regardless, you have a good woman there, I'd keep that rifle till the day I died.

Good call. Of course, you could also use the .308 as an excuse for another rifle in addition----you could even buy her the 6.5 and then you could both cross-train, and you would have your choice of rifles for any given match.......... Wins all around!!!

Still on the Honeymoon, evidenced by wife being nice to you.

ON the rifle, shoot out the barrel, 308 is plenty available, plenty of load info available, I waited til I hit almost 50 YO to go down to the 6.5 (Rem 260), the Lapua brass is $105 per 100, projos are hard to find, H4350 is almost impossible to find, factory ammo is hard to find and very expensive when you can. The 308 is a great round and teh 10 is a great rifle, you can do any upgrades yourself, 99.9 % chance it will shoot 3/4 inch or less with 43 grains of Varget and a 175 smk in a Win case, When you become an old bastage, say on your 20th Anniversary, get the 6.5/260/6mm, or whatever Gucci caliber is in vogue at the time. In the mean time have you thought about a muzzle brake?

yup this is what sometimes irritates me when people buy you a gift when you change your mind about that thing and wanted something else.

Honestly she's the money maker of house.
I make chump change compared to her. I keep a little separate gun/ammo fund that I use for my toys & try not to dip into the joint account.
 
keep the 308 for f t/r the look for a used savage and build the creedmoor also get the wife into shooting f class with you and she will help in paying for up grades to her ...I mean your rifle ( mine took over my 223 savage I shot in f t/r but then turned around and start buying components for hers and mine ) I ended up having all 3 in my family shooting

Thats a great day! now go to the garage and make sure the cars still have all bumpers and no major damage and I only assume she didn't burn down the house. If all is well starting thinking really hard about the hints that she was dropping and you weren't picking up (I don't blame you its just we're not good at subtlety) about wanting something. And buy it!

Keep the rifle there's always more room in the safe for the 6.5C
 
Keep the rifle and shoot f/tr, buy a 6.5 barrel to switch to if that floats your boat.
 
Funny, my wife bought me the same rifle. She went behind my back and looked up the pro's and con's of rem vs savage . She got me the savage so I could work on it myself ( she knows I like to tinker ) . I felt weird at first cause grampal always shot rem and Winchester . In 6 months I've got a little over 1200 rounds through it and it still shoots. I also want to go 6.5 creed , but hell this thing is still new . You are better of keepin both the wife and rifle , I did .

That's a coincidence! Congrats on your new rifle.
I actually had a buddy offer me my $ back on it today & I turned him down. I think my .308 will serve my purpose for what I'm wanting to do.

Hopefully my rail will show up tomorrow & I can find some time this weekend to get her all put together. Then run some rounds down range this coming week.
 
Hello. Hope the replies aren't already beat to death.

In my opinion, I would stick with the 308 for many more reasons than just keeping your wife happy. By keeping and shooting the 308, you can continue to shoot F T/R. Second, you can have better access to brass and components with the 308, especially in the event of more shortages or if you need to rely on the rifle outside of F class matches.

Also,in my opinion (ready to take shelter on this one), I feel there is a higher degree of skill required on the rifleman's part when shooting F T/R than Open. I see F Open as being F class/prone bench rest. Being raised a conventional sling shooter and thrust into F class because of a severe accident that left me disabled, F class allows me to continue in a 45 year hobby and still use many of the skills I honed over time.

If moma ain't happy...nobody is happy. You have a fine wife to provide you with a nice gift. Keep it, shoot it and praise her. If the itch gets too bad, then just rebarrel it with a match grade barrel AND SAY NOTHING
 
Keep the 308 and the cool wife, be happy :), my wife just whines about the green I spend.
The 6.5 can wait till next year or when you shoot the barrel out.

The beauty of a switch barrel, you can screw on whatever ya fancy, my choice would be 6 CM

Still i would surprise her and give her the rig and buy another so we could shoot together
 
Keep the gun. My wife bought me a o/u shotgun years ago, she pasted away last year I have many more expensive guns but that is my most valuable gun.
 
How would you feel if you bought her some nice jewelery and she decided to return it? Shoot the barrel out!
 
Actually I was thinking you buy her something you know she doesn't like then when she returns it you return your gun.
