Jewell triggers are pussies

They are ok for what they were designed for. Benchrest . They are in no way useful for a field or tactical trigger. Frank has posted similar conclusions. What I like about them best is that they sell well. When I purchase a Surgeon action rifle on this site, I simply remove and sell the ever present Jewell and insert a tuned rem trigger. Knocks 150 of most of the rifles I purchase.

One bad thing about them is that the trigger lever is so flimsy that if set to a usable poundage, it flexes. Useless.

I may be a retard but the triggers are pussies..... Two pierced primers, two broken, useless triggers.

I've always used timneys, decided to put a Jewell on my new 6.5x47 build.. Thinking it may be a mistake?

Ok, poor analogy... They don't stink and drip god knows what, they are simply weak and break much to easily!
If you cut slots into the firing pin "Piston" and drill the bolt body to vent, when you hit overpressure it won't trash the trigger. I know guys who have junked old style Remington triggers w/overpressure. Loading to over pressure is not safe or needed, to put a pill on target. When you feel it in the bolt lift stop, going farther is asking for trouble. What is safe in cold weather may not be in hot or when the weapon warms up on the 2nd or later shots. Cans added after load work up can cause overpressure as well.
FWIW and as always YMMV

I've used them hard and put them away wet and never had a problem with them. It's most likely the owner that's where the problems come from.

I don't know if that's true, I got 2 friends that use them hard as well and both have had great luck from them and love them. They break better than any other trigger for sure. But I have broken 3 that were just not being abused. They are deff too finiky for me. I use tuned remmys timney rifle basix and hubers before and I think they all are much better for field grade use. I would rather have a SPS with a factory remmy than a surgeon with a jewel if my life depended on it. Love em for f-class or benchrest stuff though. Nothing finer to make a gun go boom on a firing line

Good info..... I'm just venting. I accept that it was my load that caused the pierced primer....
The action is drilled. I was 170 rounds into a new build with a properly worked up load... , well within the norm for the caliber. New brass. No pressure signs, bolt slick as ever.. No flow or cratered primers, rifle shooting amazing. Then poof, a bit of smoke out the vent hole and trigger is broken.... Get it replaced, everything checked to spec, backed off load by 1/2 grain..... Should have done more. First shot on new trigger, poof goes the primer and so does the trigger....
My warning, never pierce a primer with a Jewell or you will be paying "stupid tax".

I have since learned, that some barrels will build pressure over the first 200 rounds. Perhaps, this is where I got myself in trouble.

I'm not sure we want to know what the cost of a trigger would be with a Jewell pull and true ruggedness.
Swaro glass with Nightforce durability, that's a pretty penny.
Then again, this is a group of people who's most common measurements are made in thousands of a inch and hundredths of a grain.
I take it back, I'd buy one!

I have jewel triggers in every rifle I own. I have fired literally thousands of rounds using these triggers on calibers from 6mm to 7wsm. I've blown many primers with never an issue. I've over pressured some 6.5x47 cases so bad that it expanded the web....and still no trigger issues. I've used them in many matches. Matches that at the end of the day there was so much dirt in the action that the bolt would barely close from the sand in the lugs.....still no trigger issue. I realize lots of people have had issues with them in the field, however I never have. Until they fail on me, I will contine it use them. And old Rem trigger might be great, but I've never been able to get one down to a pound or less with a break I still liked.

I know a few guys with similar results but I know a guy or two (myself including) that has seen it the other way. And if I hear a lot of people saying how they had em go down on em I would wonder. I don't know too many stories about the other brands going out. Finding jewels going out is pretty easy. Don't matter to me, but I got 2 of em with that middle pin that is all out of wack in a drawer. Theres no reason to keep putting them in after my surgeon went down with one, my bat went down, and my kelbly went down with em. All were just taking it easy too. These other triggers feel much tougher to me to. That give me warm and fuzzy feelings. I hope yalls continue to hold strong. Both of my good friends running them hard aren't afraid to get rough with their rifles. I like to see em stand tough. But when it goes down it will be at the worst time (always is LOL) Why tempt fate?

I blew up two jewels on a 6.5x47 because of pierced primers. The gun always was cratering primers and I always shot max loads. Eventually I broke an aftermarket firing pin for some reason and so I replaced it with the stock Remington I had on hand. Pressure issues went away and the rifle was able to take another grain of powder without showing pressure. Just food for thought.

ASC Fall 2012, rained Sunday morning, Jewell in my SPR was functioning. Then the sun came out, things started to dry out, and the trigger quit releasing. Replaced with CGX when I got home --> never a problem again

GAP Grind 2013, rained like hell Saturday, Jewell in my M2008 quit releasing. Replaced with Timney 510 once I got home. No problems yet.

Aside from the malfunctions, I hate the feel of a Jewell trigger. By the time its turned up to ~1.5-2lb, it feels mushy. Beyond that, when it breaks it doesn't feel crisp, it just kinda "rolls off".

To each their own, of course. I'll take an OEM Remmy trigger or even an accutrigger over a Jewell. Any day.

LOL I've seen accutriggers go down as often. Again, for the bolt guns, RB, Huber, Remmy, Timney all sound good to me

Are you mental? Have a few thousand rounds thru my Jewell triggers, they work just fine, I'll take a Jewell over and accutrigger or a tuned Remington trigger, any day.

All my match rifles have Jewells, I have yet to have a problem 20 or so matches later.

BUT, even that being said, I carry a small cleaning kit in my pack. In that kit is a small bottle of lighter fluid in case I ever need to wash it out. I have not had to use it yet.

I also have an extra Rem 700 trigger in my travel box in case the Jewell goes down. I would have that trigger in there no matter what trigger I use. Its just peace of mind.
I have not had to put that trigger in any of my guns yet either.

I just like a light trigger pull, the timneys, rem 700, etc just don't cut it for me. Too heavy

I'm not denying that many have had issues with them. I'm just saying that after thousands of rounds and many many over pressured loads, matches, rain, and sand......I've never had a issue.

I recently started trying out a CG Extreme trigger, and so far I like it. I'm not sure if it will replace the 5 jewel triggers I have, but we will see.

Never had an issue with the one's I run. +1 for Jewel. Robust and about the best breaking trigger I've used. Like I said, never had an issue.

Just my opinion......Tickle

That is a well known issue with Jewell triggers. Stop piercing primers - load lower or have the firing pin bushed - or switch triggers. FWIW: I have had factory rem triggers break from pierced primers too.

I'm going to use one for my 6.5x47 L, and I will run it a little hot. What should I do to not have pierced primers or a broken trigger. I don't want to have to send it back to him!

I have had good luck with allowing longer overtravel - tip I got from a F-class shooter - and have not broken another one since; even with pierced primers.

Yeah I doubt jewell triggers would dominate the benchrest and shooting world if they sucked. Sound like there a different problem.

Well if Jewell triggers are pussies, I would love it. Pussies can take a pounding.

It would appear this thread proves that it was mostly user error and not the trigger itself. I hear things like "max load" and "rained like hell" and such. Any trigger will have a tough time with these aspects of shooting. Then to compare that experience is folly.

My Jewell trigger in my GAP rifle is unbelievable. It breaks perfectly and I have had no issues.

Jewells going down at matches isn't always user error. They had 3 go down in one match at Rifles Only and at the first SH match in WY a good friend who knows his way around a rifle had his lock up on him in the windy dusty conditions. A quick cleaning and it was back up but it did go down.

Same here.

I always had poor experiences with them, I learned real quick to keep a thing of lighter fluid on hand. Then I realized a properly tuned Remy feels even better at 2-3lbs so I never bought another jewel.

Been wanting a huber a long time anyway. Since Frank's results on Jewels going down i've never really considered one. They do feel great but they're not worth any trouble in the event they do fail in a match.

I found that having the overtravel set to short can cause failure to fire in freezing temps. I don't like the feel of the trigger, and the safety releases too easily for field use. Had decided to return to rems.

I switched all my Jewell's to Huber's last year and haven't looked back. I prefer a two stage trigger though, and the Huber has the cleanest, most crisp break on the 2nd stage that I've ever felt. I compare it to my Geissele Hi Speed Nat Match.

My personal experience - I've used Jewell triggers for years and not yet had an issue. Have been in some nasty weather on hunts - windy and dusty in southern Arizona. Not a lot of wet weather though.
Not gonna lie - the stories I'm hearing of them breaking/locking up is concerning. Might consider a timney in a hunting rifle now that I'm in Colorado.
