I am trying to throw 10 gr or less of trail boss from my chargemaster. If I set it to those weights, it throws over by almost 2 gr every time. The only way to get it close is to set it to 7 grains and trickle up.

Does anyone know how to get the charge master to throw small throws?

There are several resources on how to hack into the system to control the speed and increments of chagres based on several variables. Just google "chargemaster re-programming". There may be a thread here as well.

Based on the re-programming I have done, I woul bet you could designate any charges of less than 10 grains be on medium speed for the first 5 grains, and the trickle the last 5.

Can you manually hit the "trickle" button on the chargemaster and will it adequately trickle? or are you talking a separate mechanical trickler?

Is the powder coming out too clumpy? Have you tried the McDonald's straw trick?

The powder isn't the problem. The machine runs right up to the desired charge weight and abruptly stops. At higher weights, it slows down and trickles. This doesn't happen at charges in the 10 gr range.

I was having this problem but only a couple tenths not 2 grains so not sure if it is the same problem. I read this and didnt believe it but it works great for me. Go to mcdonalds and grab an extra drink straw(has to be mcdonalds they are the perfect size). Cut of about an inch and slide it into the powder dispenser tube. Not sure why it works or who figured it out but it works great for me.
    Good luck

Mine will throw 3.8 tite group no problem with factory setting, may have to change your settings.

The first throw with almost any powder (unless the weights are 4.0gn or less, in which case my machine doesn't really get out of trickle mode) will be about 1.0 over as it over-shoots. Every throw after that is x.x +0.1/-0.0gn--even Trail Boss.
First, CALL RCBS. Guess what? There is a problem with your machine. First, get that fixed and then learn to program, if needed--but I haven't and I have one of the first ChargeMasters made. In fact, McD straws don't fit my machine at all and I have never needed it (but I tried any way)--I can only assume that RCBS switched to a larger OD/ID tube at some point.
If it overshoots by 0.1-0.2gn, it really doesn't matter. If you can't stand it, simply lightly wet a finger and pick up a couple of kernels of powder on your finger to get the "correct" weight. Then, look at your finger and see how small that amount really is.
People worry about slightly over-shooting the max load in a manual when, if you check several manuals, there is a range of max loads depending on components and lot numbers used (so your manual's max load could be over max or under max in your gun with your specific components and COL). These same folks are quite happy to load +P and +P+ loads or even 9mm Major...
I remember when the approved method to reload for a bolt action gun (there were bolt action pistols) was to increase the charge until the bolt was hard to lift or there were extractor marks on the case head or the case head expanded and then back down 0.5-1.0gn. Some folks were shooting 85ksi pet loads all the time.
    Don't try this at home.

no problems throwing ~10g loads of trailboss with my modded chargemaster. got the straw mod too.

The settings need to be changed for sure. I am just not sure what I should change the settings to. This is not a mcd straw remedy. It is the machine operating at high speed for the entire cycle to the charge weight. Anyone have the settings?

Googling "rcbs chargemaster programming" will get you the programming not only in text, but in video . . . eg . . .

"Rcbs sent me a email on how to speed up the chargemaster.
If any one wants the info. pm me your email and I'll foward it
    to you.
    This is right from RCBS:

    Chargemaster 1500 Speed Adjustment

    1. Turn the unit on.
    2. When 0.0gn is on the display, press BOTH the ENTER and the EDIT MEM keys on the dispenser at the same time. Hold for a second and then release. If done properly ADJUST PARAMETER should scroll across the display followed by HSP 00015.68 (This number represents the number of grains away from your entered charge when the tube will shift from fast speed to medium speed. That is at 15.68 gn from your target charge the dispenser will shift from fast to medium speed.) To speed up the unit, this number needs to be decreased and to slow down the unit, this number needs to be increased. (On a slow unit, I would change this number to11.00 gn this is done by pressing the following keys: 1 1 0 0 ENTER (pressing the enter key sets that value and moves to next setting in program in this case, to medium speed to slow speed setting)
    3. HSP 00003.42 should scroll across the display now. This number represents where the unit will shift from medium to slow speed. Using the same process as before in # 2. For a slow unit I would change this number to 2.50 gn this is done by pressing the following keys: 2 5 0 ENTER (pressing the enter key sets that value and moves to next setting in program in this case, to slow speed to trickle speed setting)
    4. HSP 00001.08 should now scroll across the screen. This number represents where the unit will shift from slow speed to trickle. Using the same process as before in # 2. For a slow unit I would change this number to .90 gn this is done by pressing the following keys: 9 0 ENTER
    5. This is all the adjustment that needs to be done to the unit. You need to press the ENTER key to cycle through the rest of the program. (approx. 22 times) The unit will start its normal initial countdown process when this is done. You need to test out the dispenser now. Enter your target charge and dispense. I usually disregard the first charge. Throw a few charges at these settings to see if they will work for you. If they don’t, return to step # 2 and repeat the process. NOTE due to powder variations you may have to adjust the unit for each powder. If you have any questions about this matter please call our customer service line 800-533-5000 my name is Don Legg and I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
