Emotional roller coaster: 6 powder droppers in < 3 years!

I don’t understand how people can claim the v4 works great then have to half a half dozen aftermarket parts to play with to try to make it perform.

The v4 always has been a terrible design that never should have come to market. The v3 was substantially better from a thrower and nothing on the market comes close to a v3 + IP
It is not a have to have to run properly. The parts are needed if you want to run faster without over throws. The V4 on its own, set up properly will do accurate drops in 12 to 15 seconds. The V4 was not designed to run fast. But everyone who complains about it is trying to push 6 second throws which makes it over throw. The small tube design does not work optimally with all powders. That is where the threaded tips shine. The thread pitch is matched to the powder so it will flow properly.

I will agree the V4 was pushed out with mediocre beta testing. Pulling the adjustment screw was dumb and created the shim issue.

The settings can be confusing too. You have to watch the transition. If it is less than 1.5 grains from target at the end of the transition it will likely overthrow. The software is designed for the small tube to run at full speed for a couple seconds so it can follow the calibration.

For the $$ the V3 with IP is the way to go. However, for those that have a V4 and can't afford another system but would like it to run better, there is a solution. We also put together a document that better explains the settings and has screen shots to help set it up properly.

My V4 has always run decent. I just did not like the 15 second throws. So I figured it out. I can get 8 second throws with some powders. 10 is the average without over throws. We tested Varget, H4350, H1k. N160, N555, RL 16. RL 15.5, N568, Retumbo and N570 to name the more popular ones.

You are making me glad I stuck with my RCBS powder dropper I got 44 years ago and mounted it above my FX120i scale that has a Ingenuity Trickler powered by a V3 brain to top off the dropped charge. All I have to do is pull the handle.

Likely to upgrade this month or next as well.

Based on how much mixed feedback I'm seeing with all of the various systems, I've also decided to go with a manual thrower for now + some kind of automatic trickler with a FX120 but it looks like Ingenuity doesn't sell a stand alone trickler anymore. edit: at least it's not on the website - have tried contacting them, hopefully they get back.

Anyone else aware of other options for just a small easy automatic trickler like this? Ideally changes powder as easily as a manual trickler, handles wide variety of ball and small to large stick powders.

Idk i dont see where the v4 is so horrible...... I mean yeah I bought some cheap shims to make it work better with the bigger powder then tested the tips and they work amazing but I haven't seen one that is perfect. IP is a joke!!!!! His trickler might work good but the lies and delays are ridiculous so for the market not to many options beside the. 3 v4 and super trickler.

I owned a v4 and sold it after going back and forth with adam a half dozen times.

It constantly overthrew and needed so much fiddling with settings and accessory it was not worth the premium price for something that was half cooked in design and would not stop overthrowing 20+ percent of cases

IPs bullshit on the timeline and comms is terrible but the v3 + IP trickler is 10x the best system out right now I’m seeing 5-8 sec throws with maybe 5% overthrow

What are you using to hold the manual thrower above the fx120 in the picture? I don't see it connected to anything.

You’ll have to look closely in the picture. I used a combination of walnut I had lying around and a old RCBS metal adapter that allowed you to mount the powder dropper off to the side of a press if you didn’t have a powder dropper stand; it came in the Jr Press kit I got 44 years ago and I finally put it to good use. You would screw the die through one side and into the press to hold the bracket and screw the powder dropper into the other side. I basically attached the walnut to the shelf in the back and used another piece of walnut for a vertical support then screwed the bracket on to suspend the dropper over my scale. I was frustrated with how long the Ingenuity dropper was delayed as well as the price for those of us that already bought the trickler, so I was determined to make a stand for free. It’s works so good, I’ll probably give up my spot in line for the auto drop.

Im pleased with the V3 dropper and IP trickler combo, works great and is easy cleanup afterwards. Screw all that BS with fighting to empty the Fking thing without dumping powder all over the place..
