Well before the season starts I've started to notice i can't use just surefire ep4's anymore without having ringing or really diminished hearing for the rest of the day if not 2 days. I plan to eventually order a set of MSA Sordin Supremes but for now plan to get either Howard Leight Impact Sports or we have a set of the discontinued Peltor 3m Tactical Sports. I am not sure if they were discontinued for a faulty issue or just phase out for new design but what do all of you suggest ? My biggest concern as I'm sure most of you agree with is i don't mind spending the money as long as whatever I get will work well be reliable and durable in the long run. I do plan to be running the surefire ep4's underneath still as some of the muzzle brakes at matches are just way to loud. Thank you everyone for your input

I've been looking for a change. I HATE the ear muff style. Seriously considering the Clarus Pro.

I don't have that model of the Peltor's so not certain how relevant this will be but I do have the Tac Pro's and will share they are big. Not sure how the Sports compare with the Pro's? I use them for pistol comp but after a few hours they become uncomfortable due to the pressure they put around the ears. I do use the gel cups which help but don't completely alleviate the issue. Depending on your cheek weld they could be a problem with a rifle due to their size. I have a pair of the ESP's that I use when shooting suppressed or to double plug with the Sordin's otherwise. As mentioned, with handguns I double plug with the Peltor's. Not sure if that helps much but of course, based on your symptoms you certainly want something more effective.

I really like the 3m E-A-R classic, the foam expands back after you take them out so you can reuse them throughout the day and they'll still expand back to fill your ear, and the cord helps to keep them around your shoulders, or tied to a cap when not in use.

I had the Peltors until recently (lost at range) and liked them a lot. Had to pick up a set of Howard Leight's in the mean time, and honestly, I hate them. Just ordered some Sordins from Triad Tactical; problem solved...

The Howard Leight Sport model is terrible. I threw mine away. They weren't worth giving away or taking to goodwill.

I'm waiting on the new Peltor something something 500's, announced at SHOT show.

Yes exactly. That was part of my dilemma. Im not sure when the new 500 series will be arriving at our shop and in the meantime wasn't sure what to do for a cheaper pair that will work great until I get the Sordins. I had also seen reference to Safariland TCI DEHP which also seem nice but much more expensive.

I have significant high frequency hearing loss and so, at age 45 (!!) started using high-priced digital hearing aids, but probably should have started using them several years before. Repeated childhood ear infections caused the problem to develop. So, hearing protection is a BIG deal.

I have, literally, tried every single brand of high-cost active hearing protection available. Forget the "in ear" things...they are NOT adequate. The ones I have found best fit on my head perfectly, have comfortable ear cups for day long use and do NOT come loose or even fall off when I'm running hard moving and shooting drills.

These are the ones that work best. Yes, you can buy cheaper ones but .... trust me ... they are not "good enough." Never shoot indoors without doubling up and you probably want to do that outside as well when shooting .308 and above suppressed.

I have been running the Surefire EP4 for a while and I think they should be sued. I have had too many time that they have either worn out or came loose and I have rung my ear. I have noticeably less hearing in my right (always the one that gets it). Not to mention that there is no way to discern if the SureFire's are worn out, you just have to wait till you ring your bell. Fuck SureFire.

I just stepped for the E.A.R. Inc molded. They are not the electronic, but could be upgraded later. They also have passive (non-electronic) version that should allow better hearing of voices. They are custom to your ear and should last a very long time. I wish I had just bought these instead of 10-15 pairs of SF.

Thank you. My story is much like yours, less ear infections but plus loud everything else, and feel I should have stepped up my hearing protection years ago. If $1000 silencers make sense, $300 ear-muffs should be a no brainer.

EDIT: Looks like that is a great price. Amazon is $100 more, and by using code PYR200, got a free pair of gloves.

Good point, and consider this: if you can avoid as long as possible buying high-quality digital hearing aids which will run you up to and more than $7,000 for a pair...what's $300 for quality hearing protection! :)

Thank you to all of you. Yes waiting back on my Dead Air can which will be nice. I will take a look into all of your suggestions. More and more lately it feels like the Surefire's aren't blocking anything. I took them out after a day of practice with a buddy and when he started to talk, I said hold on let me take out the ep4's so i could hear him forgetting i already had taken them out. Its always my right ear. My left is usually somewhat okay but the right is always the one that at the end of the day can't hear out of till the next day.

Please let me strongly urge anyone reading this thread to buy a high-quality set of actual ear muffs. The things that stick in your ear are NOT and can never be as effective as high-quality active hearing protection in the form of the muffs, and you can add to it by using the 33dB reducing ear plugs by Howard Leight and really double up to maximize protection and minimize hearing loss. You've only got one set of ears. Once the little nerve endings are killed, they never grow back and over the years the effect is cumulative and you realize one day you can't understand what people are saying to you, even though you can hear they are talking.

FWIW....

Howard Leight are junk in my opinion. The simply dont seal, and the shape makes them terrible for laying prone behind a bolt rifle. I only use the ones I bought for pistol. I do leave them in the range bag for anyone that may have forgotten ear pro.

I'm sad to hear the Tactical Sports are discontinued. They're my favorite muffs by far. I prefer them to the MSA Supreme Pro X that I bought for my wife and she doesn't use.

I stopped shooting indoors altogether because it just sucks.
