Hey guys, want to get a new barrel spun up for my SRS Covert. I want to take advantage of the fact that I have a Covert so I'm looking at barrel length max of 22" but I prefer 18"-20". So my question is, is there a magnum caliber that will do well for hunting in a shorter barrel like that? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

No idea how it performs in short barrels, but im a huge 300 wsm for killing stuff. Middle weight bullets make deer DRT. I would think with most of the small bore short mags that efficiency would drop rapidly with shorter barrels but have also heard that 6.5 3s or what ever is magic. No idea what the 6.5 prc even is though cause i haven't been on the forum much for about a year.

I agree with greywolf, neck down Norma brass instead of using the hornady.

I've got a 6.5 saum, but am thinking about a 7 saum also for hunting larger game, elk mainly. I like the velocity of the 130gr at velocity. I'm thinking the 7 for heavier high bc bullet.

If you don't mind a little expense, fire forming, and going wildcat i recommend either the 6.5 sherman shortmag or 7 sherman shortmag. Basically a shortened SAUM with a 40 degree shoulder, so fireforming is required but you can run a 180gr hybrid at mag length at 2.960 and not protrude into the case capacity. Same scenario for the 6.5 SS.

I've seen a member on LRH push a 23" 7 SS to 3300fps with a 180gr Hybrid. Well past what i'd consider safe. Having said that safe velocities from Rich's testing look like this out of a 26" tube. Step down to 6.5 SS and 3000fps with a 140 out of a 22" barrel would be easy. He sells prepped 7 SAUM brass from Norma (expensive at 2.70$ a pop) and has 6.5 SS and 7 SS brass coming form ADG, which would just have to be fire formed like the prepped norma.
    168s at 3200fps
    175s at 3100fps
    180s at 3070fps
    195 at 2955fps

I'm building a 20" 7 SAUM to run in a short action with a suppressor. I wanted a rifle that would stay supersonic to 1200 for steel but short enough to hunt with from a blind and conveniently stalk with.

Based on Quickload I can run the 168 VLDs around 2850 fps with RE17 or Norma MRP. I can also push the 175 Elite Hunters around 2800.

Those each improve on the ballistics (less drop and drift) of a 300 WM pushing the 220 smk from a 26" barrel @ 2850.
