Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

I just ordered a factory 308 barrel for my SRS from Euro-optics but they don't have any factory muzzle brakes in stock. I know the thread pitch on these is 3/4 x 24 which seems to not be very common. What muzzle brake would you guys recommend?

If the factory brake is the best choice, what vendors might have them in stock?

There are plenty of brakes our there . You can always get a Delta P adapter if you want to. I know of guys that Loctite theirs on

Another awesome shooting barrel from ES Tactical http://www.es-tactical.com/shop/Desert-Tech/ES-Tactical-SRS-Barrels--Conversion-Kits.htm. This was during load development at 200 yards using the 285gr ELDm. About shit myself when I saw this group develope. I know I know it’s only four shots but I only loaded up four shots for each of the different seating depths. I’m learning the 338 Lapua Magnum is a finicky cartridge that is not easy to load for along with being very expensive. It’s a 32” barrel and I believe I am getting about 2900fps. My magnetospeed dies half way through the charge range. I didn’t know this but they have a 2 year warranty thank god.

Very impressive! I struggle to get groups like that at 100 yards with much smaller cartridges than a 338 LM.

Very nice shooting and congrats on a great barrel.

Thanks man. I have had some good groups before but never this good. Absolutely my best group ever. I just hope the finicky 338LM will keep shooting like this or close. I believe a big part that helps me shoot this 338 is how heavy the barrel is. A good length of the barrel is 1.25” diameter and ends at 1.100” at the muzzle and is 32” long. The rifle weighs 24lbs so not something I plan on hiking with. The fat bastard break helps a ton as well. I have shot 100 rounds in one day and zero pain or soreness and I’m not a big guy either.

I have a TS CUSTOMS barrel in 300 WM, it also shoots amazing. I've fired some groups with it that are hard to believe, fortunately I've had witnesses a few times ! The groups that aren't jaw dropping are still excellent, I've only got about 50 rounds through the DT platform but I'm 100% sold on its capabilities.

Currently, I have 3 conversions and they all shoot great. Two are from SAC and one is a TS Customs. The SAC 223 conversion is especially accurate and will hold 1/4 moa or better with best 5 shot groups in the .1s and an occasional 4 shot group in the .0s at 100 yds. The other two are nearly as good, one being a 260 Rem and the other a 6 Creedmoor.
I finally broke down and ordered a 308 since I have never owned one in the 46 years I've been shooting, believe it or not. I decided to try out a factory barrel in 22" to see how I like it and how it compares to custom conversions for accuracy. All my other conversions are 26", so I wanted to have something a little lighter and more compact. I hope it shoots as well as my customs.

Do you happen to reload for your 32” 338LM?
I ask because I just got a 32” barrel in 338LM and would be interested in some reference points.
What bullets are you using?
What powders you have tried?
What velocities you are seeing?
During barrel break in last weekend I loaded up some cheaper 230gr ELD with H1000 and saw 3200fps for 97.0gr. Not sure if Retumbo would run faster velocities with a longer barrel?
I do plan on trying the 285gr and 300gr bullets after breakin.
Thanks

Sorry for the delay. I've been away from the board for a while.
So far I haven't had much of a chance to do anything with this barrel. The weather turned to crap and its been too cold to shoot. All I've done up to now is run the ammo I loaded for the factory barrel which was 250 gr Sierra Matchkings in Lapua cases with Fed LR Mag Match primers and 97gr of IMR5010. This was giving me 2920fps in the 26" factory barrel and .4" groups at 100. I didn't run the chrono with this load in the new barrel and probably won't since I ran out of the 5010 and won't get any more.

My thoughts with the new barrel were to work up loads for the 300gr bullets and some of the slower powders like WC868, WC872 etc. I wasn't that impressed with retumbo. H1000 was killing brass and primers with a lot less velocity than any of the others I tried so I didn't use much of that one.

Thanks for getting back to me on the long barrel. Interesting to hear your results with the H1000 and Retumbo. I tested H1000 and didn’t like what I was seeing. Retumbo has been much better so far. I’m hoping for low SDs with this load I have for the 285gr bullets and will confirm as soon as I get my warranty magnetospeed display this week. Going to test the 230gr bullets with Retumbo as well but the sample 5 shot load I quick put together looked promising so far. Of coarse with slower speeds than with H1000 but good group and decent SDs.

Please let me know what your results are when you do get some good weather.

I have a DTA SRS Covert Gen 2. Had it for a couple of years and it seemed like the ejection is getty really weak, up to the point that in -10C shooting this winter it wouldn't eject at all - I had to pick the casing out.
Tried both 175 TMK supersonic and 225 subsonic stuff. All Lapua once fired and FL re-sized.

What should I look at for troubleshooting ?
Also I live in Canada so it'd be a huge PITA to ship the bolt or the rifle to DTA.

I think your ejector pin probably is gummed up. Pull the bolt and fit an empty cartridge to the bolt face, does the ejector move freely? If not, put a drop of oil on it and work it up and down.

If the spring is weak, contact DT.

Sounds like your ejector springs are gone, shoot me an email and I'll get you fixed up; [email protected]

Im pretty certain this is the same issue im having with mine as well. Email incoming.

Per my post a couple of pages ago, I think I'm having a somewhat similar issue - round is extracting from chamber but not ejecting clear of the rifle. I'm going to shoot you an e-mail as well, if I may.

Awesome to see others enjoying my contribution! As a tool for a full time gunsmith I think it wouldn't last long but to keep in your range bag and get you out of a bind in the field it should work well! I did find another member close to me willing to help me out but for reasons I wont go in to (snowflake on FB had me blocked after he lost his anti gun argument with me) I had to improvise so I put my 3D printer to work.

Sounds good, hard to find any load data. I have the gen 2 version in the pic is a 26 inch 6.5 creed. I have the 22 inch .308 as well as well as a 300 win mag. Have not shit the 300 yet. Still working on loads but will have info soon. Also for people that have dead air suppressors they are releasing 3/4 inch muzzle breaks to fit dt barrels. Been waiting, using a reducer now.

I need a sanity check guys .

In my never ending quest for more performance and less weight, I'm thinking of having my 26" 300 WM barrel cut to 24", fluted and rechambered to 300 Norma. My theory is the 24" Norma will out perform the 26" WM , while the shorter length and fluting will obviously shave some weight.

Before everyone says to get a new barrel, this one is ridiculously accurate and I'm a cheap bastard , a new barrel is not in the cards at this point.

I have to ask how many rounds are on the barrel now? That aside, I think it would be a waste to do that. Average cost to chamber $275, cut/thread barrel $100 and another $150 to flute just doesn't make sense to me since you won't be gaining much and it shoots good now. That's just my opinion but I understand how it is to want something even though the best option isn't really an option at the moment.

I'm right at 100 rounds on the barrel. I just can't leave well enough alone, I guess I should just use my 7 LRM fluted barrel for weight savings/hunting and use the 300 WM barrel for beating up long range steel.

Have you considered trying to sell it and have what you want built? I understand the whole not leaving well enough alone, I think that is common with the shooting community.

I've considered selling it but I can't bring myself to part with it. It's the most accurate, consistent barrel I've ever owned, DTA platform or otherwise.

Typical 5 round group @ 100

20180210_155725.jpg

17 round group @ 300 yards

With the advent of carbon fibre barrels would you not be better off having a 300Norma carbon built? I find with the barrel out of my chassis the DTA dose not weigh all that much. Im a .308 guy and have thought about getting a carbon .308 built just so I can carry my dta about for hunting.

It's real , and it's 17 @ 300 . The old lady was recording chronograph #s for me and witnessed the whole string .

For anyone interested in the load , it's a 300 WM, 76 grains of H1000 , 215 hybrids @ .020" off the lands , Norma brass with CCI LRM 250s. It makes 2860 with an ES of 7 .

Obviously a C.F. barrel is the solution to my weight limit, but they're not getting any cheaper. I'm going to have to shelf the WM barrel for hunting, it's simply to heavy to meet the weight limit set forth by Idaho. "If you don't weigh in, you don't wrastle".

Finally got the optic on and fired 9 rounds on the 338. Easily sub moa with my last 3 shots. First time with a 338. I'm very impressed with the recoil and sound, thought it would be a lot worse over a 308. Mag load and hand load worked great. Will be turning the digital level vertical once I get the Spuhr rail attachment.

What ballistic software is everyone using? My dad got a Trimble Nomad and it seems so old, outdated, and clunky. I bought Strelok Pro and I seems very legit. I want to try Trasol but it always to be broken on Androids for a long time now.

Love this rifle! Can't wait to get the covert fore end and a short barrel.

Hornady 4DOF app is free, good, and will sync with Kestrel. BallisticARC has a nice clean layout, syncs to Kestrel or Weatherflow and is very user friendly in terms of quickly picking the enviros you want + wind dir/shot dir. Also has some cool pages like CompMode and Map view.

Anyone hit up SAC for updates on the lefty 223 conversions?

I emailed end of January, Sarah replied that they were settling in at the new building and no update.

This is my second inquiry, I ask every 6 months or so. I hope others that were on the buy list are asking too otherwise SAC might think the demand was all smoke and mirrors.

Ogbybay and sixstrings101, I'm right there with you. A lot of my shooting is at 300 yards and under. It would be great to have .223 barrel - zero recoil, cheap ammo and I don't have to worry about shooting out the barrel.

Stoked with my SAC .223 conversion.
Mark's magazine is insane qualitt and his custom bolt ejector actually kicks out the case like it should.
Finish on barrel is very close to DTS factory so whoa, amazing. I did the 26" barrel so when hunting in non supressor friendly states, my barrel still clears my AN PVS 30. night device

I asked this question before, but then it kind of got lost when two other members got into a p*ssing match with each other. So I'll try asking again. I have a LH DTA Covert that I bought slightly used in 300 WM. Just starting to get used to the rifle. The one problem I have is that the rifle is not ejecting a fired round when I open the bolt. To be clear, the bolt has no problem extracting the round from the chamber, but I have to rotate the rifle 90 degrees to get the spent round fall out. This happens regardless of whether I open the bolt slowly or quickly. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a quick fix?

There are two answers to this. First, pull back the bokt more aggressivley and the case will make it out.
Secondly, Mark at Short Action Customs makes a bolt head with a mucho better extractor which I am using on my .223 conversion. Case comes out no matter how slowly you cycle the bolt. I emailed him just yesterday to see if he would make me a bolt head with his improved extractor. I'm hoping he can do it for me.

I'm developing an expanding 200gr. Maker REX Subsonic load for the DTS 16" .308 barrel with Josh at copper creek. I have 10 trial loads in hand, 5 of each and I plan on shooting over my magneto speed for Velocity and SD. Ill also post bullseye cam photos with spread evaluation at 100 yards.
Let me know if anyone is interested in my results.

I know a lot of people complain about the ejection of the cases, has anyone tried to upgrade the spring? Just a thought, I may take apart one of my bolts and see if there is room for a stiffer spring without the coils binding when chambering the round

Last thing I haven't seen mentioned is that the chamber will have to be moved forward shortening the portion of the barrel that the receiver locks onto. Not a good idea. The only real problem I see with the DT type barrels is that you can't reasonably set them back. If they were made with longer 1.25" dia shanks and simply notched for the lock it might be a different story....as it is your front pinch bolt will have nothing to pinch and I wonder if accuracy will suffer from that?
As someone else noted, get rid of the 300WM and get the barrel you want.
