Actually, handguns in Canada aren't banned, they're just "Restricted". And yes, I hate the law because obviously it is stupid and pointless. Prohibition was repealed almost a hundred years ago. Need I say more?
Or, because this isn't the first "shooting in Toronto"... how about we administer full LIEberal logic and simply BAN all Toronto's. Because if there is no Toronto, there can't be a shooting in one, can there be?
Next, we'll ban all vehicles, because people are killed and maimed in vehicles EVERY DAY across the country, and we need to eradicate THAT threat as well. It's for the children.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of "institutions" up here were closed (Federally) a few decades ago. It was thought that "people with mental issues are still people, therefore they should live in and amongst the people." Add to that, the ubiquitous "they" were given meager welfare income, and due to said financial limitations, they were only eligible for "Provincial Housing" (Welfare apts). Many many are on the streets.
And that's a step up, and the worlds a better place now, because of the LIEberals wanting everyone to "be equal". That's as far as I'm going with these points, because the rest is downhill from here. And yes, some decades ago I worked at one of these fine institutions THAT ACTUALLY WAS making a difference, and a safe place for these folks to be. (group type statement)

I just want to be clear that I have always and EVERYTIME said "ban mental illness". Any and every time anyone wants to talk about 'banning firearms'. I'm not saying that mental illness is the problem, not at all. If you (or anyone) reads the words specifically, when I say "ban mental illness" that is tantamount to pissing up a rope. Can't be done. There's NO CONTROL whatsoever over the development of a brain AT WHATEVER stage.
As I've said earlier, I have worked with/instructed "mentally handicapped individuals" at one of the Variety Club former establishments. Most challenging job I've ever had, and the most trying, too.
So many people, in so many situations, want to "pass a law". Then fine, ban all vehicles. People are killed or maimed by the dozens across the country, every day by MVA's. Nobody is clamoring to get rid of vehicles.
Passing a law isn't going to solve a problem. Prohibition. Drunk Driving. Heroin use. Cocaine use. Herion importation/smuggling. Cocaine importation/smuggling. Prostitution. Human trafficing. Speeding. Shoplifting.
How many of the above illegal items, actions, and processes have been eradicated due to laws? So for what good it does, they might as well ban mental illness too.

no worries mate, didnt take it that way.......and i wasnt responding to anyone here specifically......but more towards the family and the media when the first words out of their mouth were "oh but it was mental illness....he was sick!!!" because they are implying hes not really at fault.....trying to pass the buck on mental illness and not the more likely causes of *cough* terrorism *cough*.
all screaming "mental illness" does is further stigmatize those with actual mental illness as "crazy".....and gives further support for those "red flag laws"
The problem with the whole mental illness thing is when the government starts telling us what their definition of a mental illness is and decides we're unfit to own guns.
There are way to many cases where it is no surprise that the person became a shooter. Most have run ins with the law, sometimes dozens of times. We aren't saying that 'mental illness', what ever that means, should be a disqualifier, but the people that tell you that they are going to do it, the people that when you are around your millions or years of evolution make the hair on your neck stand up on end- those are the kind of MFs that we need to get out of society. Guns, trucks, or a box of matches are too much of a risk with them. But they keep going on and when it happens, people are surprised. We'd be a hell or a lot better off with a little more surprise and a lot less shootings.
I hear this a lot, but it makes no sense when you actually look at it. One, it ain't cheap to commit someone, so do you think the progressives will really take money from their pet projects to lock YOU up.
The bigger issue is, looking at the shooter here in CO that shot up the cops and the Parkland shooter- these guys weren't stopped and they were off the charts crazy and violent. Are you seriously that doubtful of the demeanor that you present to people that you out distance these guys? Sure, any law like that can be abused. Hell, any law can be abused. Why even let LEOs arrest people and have prisons? Let a few states pass the laws (and some have) and see what happens.
But seriously, if that people either see themselves as indistinguishable from these monsters; that says something. The other way to look at it is, the world really doesn't care that much about you.
