I just got this text message a few minutes ago.

I don't have a SunTrust account. Never had one, never will.
Scammers must really understand how stupid some people are.

The math is in their favor. Say they send these out to only 1,000,000 people and one in 10,000 fall for it (seems low) and get taken for a mere $500 each (definitely low). That’s $50,000 easy dollars. Now if 1 in 1000 people fall for it, that’s $500,000. Worth the risk?

I don't see it as worth it honestly. What are they doing will "all the info" really? You can't go in person and withdraw funds because you get ID'ed. You can't go to an ATM and withdraw because you need the debit card. Really, all you can do is purchases via ACH transactions which require ABA and acct #. If you purchase something that way, where do you have it delivered? It's only a matter of a few days before the victim realized and files a dispute. If the bank realizes it's some sort of fraud or scam going on, they try to get to the bottom of do their best not to have to suck up the loss. I used to work in operations for a bank where my roles consisted a lot of Overdraft in general. This means dealing with fake checks, floating, fraud, etc. I also worked in online banking for commercial customers but I saw a lot on the personal level, where most of the fraud came through. The biggest loss I ever saw was right at around 30 grand via ACH and we got very involved with recovering funds that law enforcement even came in. I think we managed to get back 24 grand.

I guess if you are overseas it might be a more attractive option to scammers!

You guys are just too jaded.

Got a call from my 75 plus MIL the other day.

She calls me at work on my cell phone and tells me she is headed home to get her check book and will be leaving my 11yo son at the house alone while she did so.

I think nothing of it, she wants to do some banking, my sons 11 - WGAF why even call me?

15 minutes later she calls me and says "Im writing a check for $1000 is that going to be enough?"

I reply "Huh, enough for what?"

Her reply "How much did you say you need? Is $1000 enough?"

Im thinking "Yes she is fucking crazy, lets change the locks and keep her away from the kids." My MIL is the nicest person in the world and I admit my mental incapacity to be overly helped by someone and her absolute naivete because her husband basically handled all her affairs leaving her absolutely defenseless kind of goes up my ass.

Anyway getting a little perturbed I ask "$1000 for what? Carolyn WTF are you talking about?"

and she replies "You are in the hospital. You had a car accident and broke your nose. You need money to pay for treatment. You called on the phone and told Odin and I so."

Now Im pissed and tell her to put her check book away and Im like "Carolyn you are talking to me on the phone right now. Do I sound like I have a broken nose?"

The story is someone called the house claiming to be me requesting money to pay for hospital care. My son thought the person also sounded like me.

Keep in mind I have a job that provides me with great services, Im fortunate, calling the MIL to pay for services isnt going to happen and should I be hurt at work it wont be a phone call from me to inform people.

Fortunately she didnt get scammed though she had all but swallowed the hook. 95 year old widow of WWII vet up the street lost $5K "bailing" out her "nephew" that called out of the blue saying he was on vacation in Puerto Rico and needed bail money as he had been arrested.

The thing that pisses me off the most about the shit with my MIL is that both times she had me on the phone thinking I had been in a car wreck with a broken nose she never asked how I was doing........

Do you know how many banks and other places with secure info don't help this at all? I regularly get LEGIT messages from banks, mortgage companies, mobile phone carriers, and more with links to go log in.

Until we get everyone to act professionally, it's hard to blame consumers for behaving the wrong way with obscure systems.

Wow if my MIL got that call she would hang up on account of my effin with her and the wife so much . I had an accident once got banged up , car totaled and called the wife from the hospital . She hung up . Called again , hung up again . Called and told her look really at the hoapital , face a little cut up they released me pick me up . She told me not in the mood and if I'm not really in the hoapital she would put me there .
Mother in law called once and aske for my wife her daughter . Told her mom don't get upset she's fine , car is destroyed , doctors say she's gonna be ok . By this time MIL is cryin and hyperventilating . I'm tellin her calm down she'll pull thru then Sober as Sunday Service say oh hear she is . Took about a year for her to start talkin to me again . Eff it I laughed .

Just got three calls in about ten minutes from MIL.

One good one to tell me the daughter was doing good in dance class.

One trying to call my wife's cell but called home by mistake.

    One butt dial.

    Expecting a fourth call.
