Even in places where there is a duty to retreat, that duty is not absolute. Being pursued after attempting to retreat/de-escalate typically opens the door wide for an escalation of force, potentially if the situation warrants all the way to deadly force.

In the instances that you mention, the victim not only has no ability to retreat, it also likely has no ability to fight, and is overmatched in physical strength. In my state (non-stand your ground) it would be lawful to employ deadly force in defense of a third party in the situations you mention.

The only reason these jokers haven't been bloodied is because they confine their intimidation to places where either armed citizens don't exist or where they are very scarce. Trying shit like that in most midwestern or southern locations will likely end up differently

Also, armed forces service members are government employees. If they can make it a 7-year mandatory sentence felony to assault a New York bus driver or transit worker, they can place soldiers under this umbrella too. I was always taught to avoid a conflict if at all possible and that includes running. We were also taught in close quarters against multiple attackers to grab and control one (if possible), usually by the wrist and arm bar, put that person between you and everyone else and get out as quickly as possible. That was just one technique. Training is also different than the real world and being in that situation.

All of what you posted is spot on. The whole shield thing is a hit-or-miss and very dependent on situation and training. Staying on your feet is always best because going to the ground turns into a shit show quickly BUT a cop teaching one of our classes said that 70% of all fights go to the ground.

I don't like pistols in that kind a scenario and that is one reason I always carry a knife.

Got me several of these lying around. I carry one as EDC in my main pant pocket and a slightly smaller Smith & Wesson assisted opener in a lower calf pocket. Been a Schrade adherent for several years now. Started off getting one. Liked it a lot because of how well and rugged it is built. Then I saw them on sale for a song and nabbed a couple more.

There are many places where you cannot legally carry a handgun but I ALWAYS have a pair of assisted opening tactical knives on me wherever I am at and whether I am carrying a gun or not. 3.5" blade and the whole frame is one solid hunk of aluminum/steel with the rear of the handle doubling as a skull cra- I mean glass breaker.

If an attack is contact range or goes to the ground, one of these can instantly be deployed for a nice hefty dose of SURPRISE MUTHAFUCKA! I have done grappling situations in martial arts events with practice knives and when a fight becomes a grapple, you'd be surprised just how much stabby work can be done in a very short amount of time.

Unfortunately I just went through something like this. We were on vacation in June and had a slight altercation with some folks who were really drunk. We were minding our own business with some friends and one guy was just looking for a fight. I use to fight in the cage years ago so I wasn't afraid but didn't want a altercation. My wife told the guy I was a cop and next thing you know.....8 on 1. I knocked two of them out and 1 guy pulled a revolver so I had to deal with him and while I was distracted with woman in my face because I knocked out her son others had got behind me. I was raised to never strike a woman so while distracted by her in my face two more of their buddies slipped up behind me and hit me with a rock in the side of the jaw. I went down and took two kicks to the face which broke my nose (badly) and fractured my eye socket but I was able to get back up and fight through it and get away. Took two surgeries to repair everything and I am just now back to running and lifting but at 51 years old it takes longer to heal. I ended up really hurting 3 of them but I took some pretty severe damage. I am going back to fighting again after several years and I have retired from law enforcement.

Why am I telling this story....because it can happen to anyone at any time and if you think your buddies will jump in, you had better know them well because in my case they didn't. My wife has never seen violence like that and she still gets freaked out but I told here I have been hurt much worse than that and it was a good lesson for me to keep up my situational awareness. I would really like another shot at the fuckers 1 on 1 or even 2 on 1.
