Once again, situational awareness saves the life of a police officer. He is truly lucky to be alive after exchanging gunfire with a suspect armed with an SKS rifle who opened fire without warning.

KIRKWOOD, NEW YORK: Police received call from woman that her son has stolen her car. State trooper Timothy Conklin spots the car on Route 17 and attempts to pull it over. Car drives through median and stops suddenly. Nicholas Philhower, the 30 year old son, opens fire immediately through the rear window with an SKS rifle, riddling the windshield of Officer Conklin's patrol car with bullets. Investigation is still ongoing regarding just how many rounds were fired on both sides but at one point, both Conklin and Philhower stopped to reload. Nicholas Philhower was pronounced dead on the scene. Conklin, 28-year veteran of the NYSP, sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital today.

While no additional details have been released by authorities as a search warrant is being conducted on his home, this has the markings of a possible mass shooter en-route to a target. 30 year old man steals his mother's vehicle, no info on criminal record or ties to extremist organizations. SKS with multiple magazines, still waiting on information on how much ammunition did he carry. Mother likely did not know son was armed. Very interested to hear what she has to say about her son during interviews with police.

Released photo showing the front of Officer Conklin's patrol car after the suspect's first mag dump:

It is VERY possible that many lives had been saved on this night...We don't have much to go by yet, but from what we do have, it does not look good at all.

Sounds like Officer Conklin is going to be OK. Good news. (y)(y)(y)

Are those entries or exits on the windshield?

Almost certainly exits from the officer returning fire from the driver's seat. If those were 7.62 entries clustered like that - right into the officer's face - he'd be dead as dead can be. Since he sustained "light injuries" it's safe to infer that the kid with the SKS didn't know how to shoot worth a damn.

Exactly what I was thinking when I scrolled down...Just ONE experience with naked ears and a .36 cap and ball Colt in an indoor range years ago is enough to have me double checking my ear protection every time before I let rounds rip.

I hear ya  I shoot outdoors under wood and metal roofs. Even with doubling up my protection it is uncomfortable. What kind of permanent damage is there from shooting inside a vehicle that many times? Seems like it has to be bad.

Extremely harmful. And that is an understatement. Given that the actual threshold for pain in the human ear is 130 decibels, anything above that can actually rupture the cochlea, which is a snail-shaped structure filled with fluid, and tear the eardrum. During the US Civil War, there were many accounts of "blood running down the faces" of artillery crews and front line soldiers firing multiple volleys. That is the result of immense concussion.

One round out of that .36 Navy Colt loaded with just 18 grains of FFFg caused me to get an immediate piercing ringing which lasted for at least 20 minutes. And even though that subsided afterward, my ears still felt like I had just come out of a pool and they were filled with water. That lasted for several hours. I was 11 at the time. And I had never since been without hearing protection. Both plugs and muffs.

Be VERY careful out there. When you are teaching new shooters or letting somebody else shoot your firearms like I always do, make sure their ears as well as yours are FULLY protected. Because it absolutely will suck to have quality of life diminished by damaged senses.

I bet mom is happy she called the cops and had them “arrest” her son who took her car....

    Glad the cop is okay

I gotta wonder if this guy knew he either was without a doubt going to jail for having an “unregistered” rifle for 20 + years and a couple more for stolen car or he had to take his chance and shoot it out and possibly get away.

I dont see how this is a possible mass shooter ?
