Hi, I am new to the forum and would really like some help when it comes to my new mid range build. I am trying to find a good barrel that will shoot sub MOA at 200-250 yards but I will be taking the rifle out to about 800 yards. Any ideas something that doesn’t complete brake the bank?

Please define “breaking the bank”.
What kind of budget for build w/o optics are you planning?
Right now the # of unknowns far exceeds the # of knowns, making any meaningful suggestions pretty hard to do.

So I have almost everything for the upper on the build and I’m looking between to different optics, the vortex viper hs 4x16x50 or a Bushnell Forge 2.5x15x50 both in first focal plane. I’m looking really to spend no more the 400$ on a barrel.

The barrel is arguably the most important feature of your rifle in your hopes of getting said rifle to shoot sub MOA. Well, that and your ability of course. Don’t skimp on the barrel. I have Satern, Lija and AA barrels currently. They are all sub moa with factory ELD ammo with the Lija and Satern considerably better than the AA. 18 or 20 should be fine, but go RLGS with the 18 if you go that route. Don’t be afraid to spend a little more than $400 for the barrel. The % of increase to get your rifle to shoot is worth it.

If I were buying a Grendel barrel for the OP's description of medium to long range, it'd be either short (like 12.5") or long, at least 20" but more likely 24". The numbers I'm seeing on 16"-18" Grendels don't appear all that exciting IMO in comparison to what I'm getting from a 12.5" barrel.

On optics - one of the SWFA SS scopes will get you there, either a fixed 6x/10x, or the 3-9x. The 10x feels right at home on a 24" long range gun, while the 6x is more suited to the medium range stuff (although the physical size of those two is the same).

Difference in velocity between my 20" and a friends 23" is a whopping 30 fps so personally I'd not go over 20" bbl. IMHO, 18-20" is about ideal barrel length for the 6.5 Grendel. Shorter if running a can and keeping overall length down but giving up some velocity and LR performance.

I haven't chrono'ed the 14.5" bbl (1.5" of brake/adapter for suppressor so no tax stamp required for an SBR) I have in 6.5 Grendel but I'm guestimating a 120 Berger at about 2400-2440. I should be chronographing this load in next couple days, definitely by next weekend and will post velocities at that time.

Nothing against a 12.5" barreled 6.5 Grendel but OP didn't state he wanted an SBR (if an SBR is even legal in his state of residence) or pistol build. I know a shorter barreled 6.5 Grendel will get bullets to 800 or beyond but in all honesty, the are running outta gas pretty noticeably past 600 when shooting reactive steel (LaRue, old style flash targets where steel rotates to show orange, etc.) so it wouldn't be my first choice for an 800 yard set up. 250 yards and in, running a suppressor and want really handy rifle....12.5" would be a great way to go.

120 Berger from a 20" is running 2550-2575 where it shoots best. Possible to get more velocity with some of the double base ball powders but that comes with more temp sensitivity so I'll stick with single base extruded powders.

11.5" barrel - 2200 fps LaRue SURG upper.
14.5" barrel - 2363 fps LaRue 18" that was cut down to 14.5", picked up from SH PX as I wanted to see how a shorter bbl would perform.
18" barrel - 2475 fps LaRue 18" factory upper.

Possible to push faster velocities but posted velocities is where the uppers shoot best.

I Went with a 20" Creterion Barrel with a JP Adjustable Gas Block (rifle length) and the Matching Bolt from Precison Fire Arms. Also the LaRue Tactical MBT Two stage trigger. Have no regrets and it is a shooter. Loves the 90gr Speer TNT round.

This tracks right along with what I've seen over the years.

For my 18" barrels (all speeds 15ft from the muzzle):
90gr TNT - 2892fps
120gr Federal Match - 2484fps
120gr Scenar-L Precision Firearms - 2511fps
123gr Hornady AG - 2441fps
123gr Hornady SST - 2457fps
123gr A-MAX - 2519fps
129gr ABLR - 2410fps

16" Grendel
100gr NBT - 2675fps
120gr SMK - 2527fps
123gr Scenar (PF) - 2452-2522fps
123gr A-MAX - 2439-2456fps
123gr A-MAX Hand load - 2489-2532fps

For 12" Grendel:
90gr TNT - 2698fps
107gr SMK - 2450fps
120gr Federal Match - 2399fps
