are there any barrel fixtures that will fit in a bench vise

Is it safe to use a bench vise for a barrel vise and are there any fixtures for it?
Get 2 wood blocks, put them in the vise to hold them together and drill a hole down the middle of them that is an exact or ever so slightly smaller diameter than the barrel diameter, squeeze it on down. Maybe rubber jaws or just normal flat wood blocks will hold, depends on how much torque you need to do the job.

This plus use rosin on the wood blocks, I used this for years until my cheap ass bought a barrel vise.

A set of V blocks (wood or metal) also works great. I have Aluminum and put a towel around the barrel.
If you don’t have a big drill bit to bore a hole in wood blocks, you can use a table saw or hand saw to cut the V.

Also if you use a soft wood like pine expect it to break before the barrel breaks loose. Oak is your friend.

(Just buy a viper barrel vise life is too short)

Is the Viper Barrel Vise the best vise? Better than the Wheeler that uses wood bushings?
I like my viper vice. PMA tool has a similar one I think.
Some say its not great for factory barrel removal, it did my one factory rem 700 just fine once I put a long pipe on the action wrench as a breaker bar but thats just a sample of one. Many say its not up to the task. If youre not going to be doing a lot of those then I dont see any issue.

I have 2 small pieces of leather that I put on top of and under the barrel when it goes in the Viper. Nothing has slipped on me, and nothing has been scratched. I do believe the PMA tool is very close. When I looked at it I recall the noticeable difference was the coating used.
