Fieldcraft Here is my field gear. Looking for Opinions.

Off topic but I bought a SERT plate carrier to bring up my order total enough for free shipping.

Now I'm looking for some decent but inexpensive PE soft plates, class III probably. Any recommendations?

The prices vary a lot but it's just plastic, I'm skeptical that there is much difference if they pass the tests. If there is a difference, what does the extra $$ buy?

p.s. not a sniper unless eBay counts.

By soft armor do you mean something like BALCS? There are two NIJ level 3 ratings; one is pistol, the other rifle.

A level 3 BALCS/soft armor is basically to stop pistol rounds; do you only see pistol calibers as a threat for what you are getting armor for?

Also, armor and cheap do not go together in a sentence. For the level 3+ and 4 rifle plates, the main difference is material (steel vs ceramic) and then a larger difference mainly in price are plates that are lighter weight (same level, yet a plate weighing 7lbs is way less than a plate weighing 3lbs, etc). The happy medium here is usually a lighter weight swimmers cut multi curve level 3+ ceramic.

Just save up for these https://rmadefense.com/product/level-iii-plus-multi-curve-small-extra-large-nij-07-tested/

Since we're all here, here's a question. I was trolling around on the ARF plate carrier thread and I can't seem to wrap my head around a few things I am seeing in basically 75% of the pictures:

- Why does everyone only have 3 rifle magazines?
- Why is there like a 2:1 ratio of rifle to pistol magazines?
- What is with those new fannie pouches in the front that will only constantly knock you in the dick when you run?
- Why is there an obvious lack of hydration and/or comms?
- Why do people have shit near your firing shoulder (hydration hose, admin pouch, etc)
- Why is everyone's gear so fucking clean?

I don't have a threat in mind but I would prefer something that would stop .223, 7.62x39 and hopefully .308.

I don't think I'll piss off anyone more than that.

Then you need what I linked above or a bigger lvl 4 standalone if you don't mind the extra weight.

I think my carrier will take the medium size which is $225 at that link, not bad.

For the side panels and back, I think pistol protection for 9mm, .45 ACP and .22 magnum should be enough.

Is there anything light weight and inexpensive that stands out for that?

Get a set of 2 plates; one goes in the front, the other in the rear.

You don't need side plates.

If you still can, cancel the SERT carrier and get a Mayflower Scarab, Mayflower Low Profile Assault Carrier or be an original gangster and get a Crye CVC that are now on ebay for like $100.

Practice 'up drills' and make sure your stance is fairly square to your target.

1. Because that’s all that fits across the front. If you need more than 3 you should be dead anyways.
2. If the rifle doesn’t do the trick the pistol is there for funsies.
3. They are “SnackFannies” to hold your snickers of course. (Not sponsored by snickers but I’ll take one if offered)
4. If you need water your milsim is too long. Mom should provide a juice box if needed.
5. Because you don’t shoot just look badass is enough to get people to die!
6. Because when your done mom washes them..... duh

My SERT carrier is here and empty. It seems well made and it was inexpensive and on sale when I bought it last year.

If I ever am under fire and in armor, I'll try to square up the threat so I have a III+ plate protecting some of my vitals but if it's a threat I don't see, I would like to at least have pistol protection so a lighter weight III or IIIa is what I'm thinking for back and sides. I should invest in a decent helmet too.

If you want the weight for the side plates have at it. I have never used them.

But I am 100% serious; get the same plate for both front and back. You're not doing yourself any favors otherwise. Plus, the weight difference in the two plate pockets will make your carrier hang on you weird and it will tend to try and slide towards the heavier side and your carrier won't sit right.

And if you're under fire, don't square on the target, get behind cover and get ready to move (assuming someone is currently putting rounds towards the threat and you are all communicating on your next movements as well as what the guys shooting at you are doing). But that's another thread.

This thread was a rollercoaster. But you have shared a lot of solid advice, I hope that those that need it are able to recognize it and learn something that may save their ass someday.

Here's some gear opinions...

100mph tape.

Bands to attach veg to that abomination of a ghillie

An E tool and a bakers dozen short, sharpened lengths of bamboo for implementation of punji pits

A large container of owl dung to coat the bamboo

Multicam boxer briefs, so he'll never see you coming......

Face paint. Because of the reasons. That's why

Spray fox piss on yourself to throw off the human odor.

A shakeweight. Always be training.

Nudey mags. It gets lonely in the pretend suck

A longer thigh rig strap. I mean, I need that bitch to be at least calf level.

Hair relaxer. Itll help with the jute tangles that I'm sure you're already trying to brush out.

A forearm tattoo of Mark Walberg's likeness from lone survivor, wrapped in tribal and peace frogs.

And last, but certainly not least.....
A Go Girl. Itll help with peeing, once you're dug into your hide.

That's all I've got. For now...

This post made my day. It's all awesome, but the "shakeweight" suggestion caused me to spit coffee on my keyboard.

Might I suggest that Saclee Rhino delete his account and start over. Maybe just read and learn, and not post anything again. Ever. At least not until he grows up.

Furthering the off topic conversation, would it make sense to offset the weight of a heavy front plate by trying to hang mag carriers from the back of a plate carrier?

It seems with all of the stuff people hang on the front, they aren't going to be balanced any way.

I have enough gut getting in the way on my front, I don't want to add anything I don't need up there.

I don't think I'll need to plan for walking long distance with a fully loaded pack and a plate carrier so I don't think mag carriers on the back will interfere too much.

Now, where am I going to carry my rope?

I would not mount mag carriers on the back, you would have to take off your platecarrier to access the mags. Run identical plates front and back, you can always hook a water reservoir on the back to offset your mags on the front if the balance is off. Mine balances well with a clean back. YMMV.

I was thinking they would wind up hanging below the plate, one horizontal on each side so I could reach back and pull them out sideways.

I have a long torso so it probably won't hang low enough to interfere with sitting.

Start with 6 mags across the front, then have 4 more on your belt...... the real question is how many more mags do you have loaded up and ready to go cause you shouldn't count on having time for picking up your spent mags after you're done doing whatever red dawn stuff you're planning for.

This is what brought about the dump pouch.

Something designed for SSE or ways to carry 100 round belts turned into a magical phenomena of people attaching these to their 'battle belts' loaded up with mags and tempting fate as to when perfect timing and physics would intersect; making the pouch swing up between your legs and hitting you in the ballsack.

Just.... no....

You want to die a flaming death like that one milsim feller?!? That was a close one man...

I am pretty sure that it had been established on the interwebz long, long ago that one just CANNOT be 'Operator As Fuck' without a rig capable of withstanding multiple .338 rounds to the back as well as a NEF Handi-Rifle chambered in .300 Win.Mag.

@madppcs Gotta give you a kudos for that kickass collection you got there. Especially that Kriss. (y)

He was wise. Some people bite off a little more than they intended with the early posts. I blame their experiences with other forums.

So, did like, anyone else want to post up their 'field gear'?
Just found this thread...still laughing to hard. I thought just post was a joke. But what do I know, I don’t carry 7 extra super special bullets for important shots lol.

Think I saw he is going to be a beta tester for a new outfit promoting shooting, night vision and blowing shit up.

Probably be picked as an instructor due to his awesomeness.

Totally believable

I'm honestly considering having people who fuck something up while out there be relegated to digging a trench.

I was going to put my name in the ring but as soon as I heard there were no repercussions (ditches) for being stupid, I decided it might not be for me. I'll still give a 5 star rating on yelp, but I don't know if I'll leave a written review. If you decide to let us hunt the ones who fuck up, then I'll reconsider my decision. :)
