No name.... bet if it was John Smith from Arkansas... we’d have a name. But if it is Attu Faringi from Minneapolis.... by way of Dhofar... we won’t get a name.

Then again, I am a cynic...

    Sirhr

You are not a cynic. You are a realist. Realists see things with pragmatic, cautious, and wary outlook based upon cold, hard facts and similar incidences in past history as opposed to idealism or political correctness.

One of the unintended consequences of the media being all politically correct about certain things is that people are just going to start assuming when certain important details are missing from a report. Very bad shit tends to happen when this goes on.

Everybody in the area, stay locked and loaded. If you have a CCL, then there is absolutely NO reason why you cannot carry everywhere. If you do not have a CCL yet... What are you waiting for?

More like gone missing. For now, than gone rogue.

Time will tell. B interesting to see what shows....
M4 turned loose by somebody half trained will make all that went b4 a Mary Poppinz tale, and the libs WILL piss themselves unreal.

Like the other "cynics" (haha), I wait to see when Kemal is identified...

I seriously Pray that there is nothing sinister OR devastating in this storyline. For it to turn out simple, innocuous, and "letter to file" as opposed to anything else would be fantastic.

Statistically, not very realistic. But fantastic.

Realism, yes, but there's still the chance that the media is correct, the cadet isn't a threat to anyone and is simply missing. Outside of the "he's gone rogue" possibility, my current opinion is he was doing some extra practice for the competition he was supposed to attend over the weekend and, foolishly, did it alone and has been either injured or dead. Either way, his name's gonna be in the news sooner or later and if he's dead I rather hope the circumstances are the latter possibility and not "was shot dead while doing something traitorous and irrevocably stupid".

Remember, every member of congress can have 5 cadets at the academies at a time... congressional appointments are the bulk of Academy students.

you think Iliahn and Bernie and Leahy and schiff are appointing the best and the brightest? Or the most politically reliable?

I would like to think the former. But recent years have shown some real concerns. When 40 percent of the officers attending command and general staff college write their exit papers on how climate change is our biggest military mission, I start to Wonder if some of the ring knockers are as good as we want them to be.

politicians are choosing many if not most of our academy cadets. Remember that.

Let's hope he does not pull a Dillinger. And with an M4 and easily obtainable support accessories picked up elsewhere, he can do a lot more damage than Dillinger did if he wanted to.

500 Internets to anyone who gets the reference...

It doesn't work quite the way you think. Appointment is necessary for admissions consideration. Appointment does not equal admission.

    I went through the process.

Clyde Barrow had a liking for BAR’s. Did a lot of damage, too!

Pic of one of Clyde's own modded BARs. Too bad the pistol gripped version never really caught on in the US except for the Monitor.

    No magazines or ammo?

No problem. Not like they're hard to find in any gun store. Or from sympathetic friends.

Careful you are about to make the lefts argument for them on mags and ammo....lol

But wait hold on I thought M4s and the likes only posed a threat in the hands of civilians not trained almost military personnel.....lol

I was actually referring to the Mobile Infantry deserter from Starship Troopers who went on to brutally murder a young girl before he was arrested by a local sheriff, brought back to the camp, charged with a capital crime and sentenced to death by hanging. 'The MI takes care of our own', as how this slogan was developed...

But yes, never underestimate what a fully automatic weapon can do in the hands of someone who is intent on causing harm. Clyde Barrow certainly did play a big part in why the Roaring Twenties was 'roaring', though most of his antics were carried out during the Depression...

    Well, that's good to know!

Not saying that the academy system is either broken... or inappropriate, either. I think it turns out great leaders for the most part.

But we must always be wary that it could get corrupted!

I cannot speak to the West Point system at all but I'm reminded of a story one of my professors told us seniors (along with saying twice in one semester that he'd just graded the worst set of freshman papers he'd ever seen). He taught several military history classes, at least one of which was mandatory for ROTC cadets. One of said cadets just did absolutely balls-to-the-wall awful on one of his exams; didn't do the required number of ID questions and got 3/4 of them flat wrong, short answers were a couple of lines instead of a couple paragraphs, essay was a page and a half in a small-sized Blue Book. Cadet didn't understand how he'd managed to fuck up so bad nor what he'd done incorrectly on the exam. Professor went to the commandant and showed the exams to him and said "I can't believe these are the young folks we're gonna have leading our military if they do this badly." Commandant answered "Hell, we're washing half them out before the semester is over."

I also saw a cadet handling his (airsoft) M16 just absolutely wrong and I wish to this day I'd gone over to the commandant and said "Lieutenant colonel, that guy over there's got his face down in the dirt, finger on the trigger, safety off, and isn't watching where his muzzle is pointing with people walking around out here. Can I watch while you rip him a new one?"

Self inflicted would be my guess.........how hard is it to pocket a single 5.56 round.......
Well self-inflicted maybe but he seemed in perfectly good spirits a day or two before he went missing. So I think it's more likely he went out for some extra skills practice or something, got hurt, and perished.

Are you posted at USMA? Seems like it.

I bet the dude offed himself. That's typically what happens when the cause of death isn't mentioned as accidental in initial reports.

Lots of pressure in that school.

And the following is stereotyping but Asians dont have a "trophy" mentality.

The old school families expect performance and still understand shame.

Sad if the kid succumbed to some self imposed extreme pressure.

I am not but there's a picture of him all smiles and cheerfulness a day or two before he went missing with the actor Stephen Lang. Kurita apparently was in charge of the Cadet Film Forum and presented Lang with a double-sided photo of West Point "then and now". Which I found because a news video of the disappearance had a set of comments apparently from Kurita's brother giving his name, and it was literally the top post on the West Point Facebook page except for the disappearance notices. He's got the biggest grin on his face and I just find it hard to believe he would've killed himself 24hrs or so after that. Maybe I'm just trying to be an optimist 'cause the last thing we need to hear about is another military-related suicide and as little comfort as it might be to his family, it's better if he was killed accidentally than by his own hand, but there it is. You must understand, suicide is personal to me, I nearly lost my best friend to it just over a year ago, so I admittedly try to think the best of someone in a situation like this even if all I have to go on is a single photo. Which isn't a whole lot and gives me no input into the guy's state of mind but... yeah, optimism, right?

Unfortunately, Kurita has been found dead but details are not yet forthcoming except that he was found on school grounds.

    Plausible

Maybe he had a Tiger Mom

A whole lot of stories about suicide start with "... but he/she seemed so happy!!!"

Most of us here are adults - we should be very aware that people are capable of hiding their emotions (particularly negative ones). Something poor kid is barely dealing with 20 years of self-doubt, they get shit on by a prof or rejected by a girl or get bullied by some "friends" while in a socially-isolated situation, and suddenly it seems like there's only one way out. It doesn't take but a few minutes of dark clouds to go down that path, especially if some mental illness has gone undiagnosed.

Suicide is now the #2 cause of death for people age 10-24 (behind car accidents). That's incredibly fucked-up, and I wish society would get as outaged over this as we do over "mass shootings" or deaths from vaping.

Believe me, I understand. Moreso, I know that there is SO much more that I don't know. As per my thread from long ago, my FIL attempted suicide almost 2 years ago. That has hit the family massively, devastated pretty-much everything that we'd had going/planned/intended to do, and now the daily focus is the 24/7 care that he needs. The only thing that he can do for himself now is 'breathe'.... and by that I truly mean the ONLY thing.

Add to that, the doting wife who took "for better or worse, in sickness and in health" completely to heart and is doing everything INSTEAD of a hospital or institution. With the daily help from her daughter(my wife), of course.

Yeah, suicide....... it leaves a mark.

Well it would appear, according to the New York Post, that he did indeed commit suicide. Single shot to the head from his M4. Apparently he may have hinted at committing suicide on Snapchat shortly beforehand. Cannot imagine what might've been going through his mind to lead him to that but it's unfortunate he felt it was the only solution to whatever his problems were. And yes, I was trying to be optimistic about the situation but of course I knew there was a distinct probability he'd be found dead by suicide.

And in light of that, I'm gonna say this: If y'all ever have or know someone who has suicidal thoughts, talk to someone about it. Make friends who will stick by you no matter what and who you can trust to help you get through them. Make sure they have a way to contact other friends, family, and emergency services if need be. Like I already mentioned in this thread, a person I am extremely close to tried to kill himself a little over a year ago. I'd known him for a few years, always stuck by him, never got angry or upset with him, and I knew he had his demons and how alcohol made them all the worse. I helped him every time but one night, that just wasn't enough and he tried cutting his wrists. It was sheer dumb luck that another friend in his area was able to call an ambulance and get to him barely in time. He actually didn't want me to know, I found out 24hrs later, but he told me that I was what kept him fighting to live. I am infinitely glad that he is still alive today and I am very proud of all the progress he's made in the last year.

No matter how bad shit gets, no matter how fucked up the situation is, no matter what, it's not gonna be the end of the world and there's no reason to kill yourself over it. If you feel that way, you're not alone in the world. You've got friends and/or family who don't want to see you gone like that. You've got people who will move a mountain to do their best to help you out when you need it. And furthermore, be that person to someone if they need it too. You might save a life.

    I don't think you're wrong. At all.

The pressure is intense. Imagine, if you will, a YEAR long boot camp, with 9 months of it also crammed full of elite university level academic work.

After year 1 the boot camp shit goes away but the physical demands never let up and the professional, leadership, and academic standards just keep going up.

It's been 31 years since commissioning and I remember almost all of those four years before it quite vividly.

Add to that family pressure to not fail/bring shame, and I can see this sad ending being all too real a possibility.

And is intense for a reason. Because when these cadets become commissioned officers, they will have to think and act under far worse pressure situations — combat. And the result of failure or wrong decisions or “locking up” won’t be a C-grade or a dressing down from a superior, it will be dead and maimed men and letters home.

I recently attended a muster at my alma mater...a full cadet 0600 formation at which MoH winner David Bellavia addressed the whole corps. He said that the people he feared most in his chain of command were not cowards. They were easily spotted and weeded out. And were rare. The ones he feared were the ones who could or would not make decisions. Because they could hide in the woodwork... never rising out of the shadows... always slipping through the cracks and up the promotion ladder. But then when they finally HAD to make a critical decision, they locked up or punted or made the wrong call in a panic and guys got killed.

Despite our original cynicism about what started the hunt for this young man, The loss of this cadet is a tragedy and I am sure his family is devastated by their loss as they should be. But they would have been more devastated if he had broken down at a critical moment while leading a platoon or a company... and taken many more with him. That is what the pressure of training (and forging officers) is designed to prevent.

Excellent comments, 308 and PM. On point!

If I ever decide to commit suicide, I'm going to run myself to death. That will give me time to decide my wife ain't that bad and I get to shoot pretty much whenever I want. Then I can stop, catch my breath and walk back up the drive.

That, sir, should be shown to ANYONE who feels that they are losing it and cannot continue anymore. Well said!

Yes and if you are a good kid like this one probably was you are stuck in that atmosphere with all those other prick types all the service academies generally attract :)
