The right the south wanted to preserve was slavery. The Republicans would have limited its expansion and eventually the institution would have been ended, and the southern economy with it. Attacking Fort Sumter was meant to provoke a war and had all the legitimacy of Cuba attacking Guantanamo.

On a side note, being from Delaware, if anybody tells you it was about slavery, they are fill of shit. There were slaves in the Delaware governor's mansion long after the war ended. The last one's died in the 1900's. Funny how the Democrats have completely flipped so quickly.

Slavery ended everywhere in 1865. The EP ended slavery only in places in rebellion as that’s all the President had the authority to do.

Now bear in mind, this is in southern Va., but I remember to this day the shock I felt when he stood in front of the class and told us in no uncertain terms was the civil war fought for the abolition of slavery. It was shocking for two reasons. The first was this was contrary to everything we had been taught in school up to that point. And second, Mr. Jackson was a 6' 2" tall black man who was also an Army paratrooper and Vietnam veteran, who didn't tolerate half truths or political correctness when it came to historical accuracy. Only later did I realize how fortunate we were to have him as a teacher and role model...

The American Civil War was fought for control of wealth and natural resources, as most wars are, on both sides. The rest is obfuscation.

It’s only hotly debated because some people ignore evidence. Yes, tariffs were a concern for southerners, no, they weren’t the cause of the war.
I’ve not said that and agree with your characterization. Ultimately the war was about the south wanting to retain and expand slavery and the north wanting to retain southern territory, resources, tax revenues and markets for northern goods.
The south should have tried to pass a law in Congress to open the door before they left and tried to take federal property with them.
