Well this blows...got let go this week.

Crap, really sorry to hear this, hope you find something soon (or get the wifes approval to start your own)

This is one of my biggest fears/concerns as I am getting older. I have been threatened with it multiple times (almost yearly for the last 15 years) and I was outsourced one to another company but manged to get insourced back to the original company again.

I found my 20+ years of contacts (people that knew me, not just casual) were not as helpful as I expected when I was certain I was going to get cut (but really didn't) Its not only about knowing people, but it is also all about timing. My contacts just didn't have anything for me at the salary level I needed to be at.

@Vodoun daVinci that is awesome that you can be that employable at your age. However having 3 jobs in the same year has to suck ass with regards to heath insurance changes (at least I know it would for me as I would meet 3 deductibles that year and it would kill me). I am going to assume you are still saving for retirement simply because you are not retired, I know some companies still make you want a period of time before you can get any matching funds in a 401k, I get that this is the new workforce these days, but it does have the potential to still screw you.

Still working...and, yes, changing jobs sucks. But this is going to be the future going forward as AI and Robots take over the gigs. No more rooting in place. We have to move or get left behind. My advice (from a guy who is doing it) is to keep yer chin up and get your ducks in a row about job loss and finding other/new employment. No matter who tells you otherwise - there will not be more jobs going forward - only less. Skilled labor is in huge demand right now so make yer Boss pay for that if you have those skills and bank/invest the surplus.

Guys who have not job searched for 10 - 20 years?

Get yer resume up to snuff and get your LinkedIn page and references in order. It'll take precious weeks/months to get in order when they let you go. The future work force resembles nothing like 10 years ago especially in technical fields or specialized services and skills jobs. My advice is get moving or you'll get run over.

VooDoo

I would love to do this, but it’s quite a leap and the wife isn’t as keen to taking risks as much as I am but boy would I love to do that and be my own boss. Problem is I literally have no idea where to start aside from maybe one freelance at a time.

Hi,

You just need to show her the Department of Labor statistics for employees of your field in YOUR location vs the industry growth in your field across the country.
You also need to show her the pros and cons of being able to work/contract via telecommute vs being shackled to a job in your location for your field.

Launching your new company: (EXTREMELY BRIEF RUNDOWN)
1. Business structure type...(LLC, Sole Proprietor, Partnership, Corporation, etc etc)
2. Business name.
3. Register your business with your State Comptroller office of whomever handles business registrations in your State.
4. Apply for Federal Tax ID (EIN).
5. State Tax ID.
6. Permits.
7. Bank Account.

Sincerely,
Theis

I need a few simple banner ads made for a site I advertise on. I have made them myself in the past but am tired of fucking with photoshop, which I suck at. Was gonna use a local guy but would be happy to throw you the cash instead. Not a long term gig but $100 is a $100. Do it at midnight in your undies for all I care. Lemme know if you're interested and I'll get you my contact so we can chat about it.

...and be aware that starting up a new company (I still own my own Corporation) is expensive and the failure rate in America is very high. Mostly due to providing health care insurance for the principles and attracting partners/employees.

And you have to pay both halves of your Social Security and Medicare. I loved working for myself but starting your own Corp. or whatever is Fucking. Expensive. And scary. And extremely rewarding if you survive.

Hi,

Replied but figured I would put this part out publicly too; just to help you gauge interest and comments from other members.

Take this opportunity to affect real change in your professional, family and hobby life....Launch your own digital media/marketing/social media management company that specializes in the firearms industry.

With most media/marketing companies being owned by liberal parent companies, etc etc the companies that specialize in the firearms industry are few and far in-between, so we get stuck paying aka supporting a company that really could not care less about our industry, rights, and passions.

Sincerely,
Theis

^^^^^^^ The HCRP is looking for a new marketing company since they've been using a liberal one that has been tanking their shit and helping D's win elections for the last few cycles.

Plus, I keep telling all these people their political material is weaksauce and basically turns to garbage as soon as anyone looks at it.

Dude is a photoshop pro for sure. Just had him make me some banner ads, turned them around before I could have got photoshop opened on my old ass computer. If you need any sort of graphic media I am sure he can set you up. Quick professional and reasonable. I'll attach one of the three he made me. He also kept this .gif ad under 100kb which is required on the site I advertise on. Making things look good at such a small size is something I have alway fought with.

I didn't. A friend did and was going to let it die. I bought his patent, changed the name, refined it to look professional, figured out how to streamline manufacturing (done by me in the US) and brought it to market. If you raft or have a boat that has a ladder in the way all the time you should buy one, LOL. Enough about that already before I get busted by the HMFIC for advertising. I was just trying to showcase silent stalkers work so he can take care of them babies.

i would imagine all the commercial WW raft guides would want these. Or make it a law were they have to have one on each raft hahah

This is a dark time for anyone in their career... and I was in the same position 1 year ago.

I'm not connected in the graphic design area, but I have spent a lot of my career hiring people. I'm definitely willing to look at your resume and give you any feedback and edits that may help. Im definitely not the expert. But having multiple eyes look it over never hurts. Happy to help anyway that I can.

Nah, the guides want to be heros and save the custies. Its the private rafting old fuckers like me that are tired of getting banged up climbing back in, the fatties that just can't climb in anymore or the dads that are tired of having to set down their beer to pull the kids in.

There is a video on me on that site and or youtube showing me fall out and climb back in in 7 sec. They are nice for sure. Im working on a couple different mounts to adapt them to other style boats.

Uncle Sam needs you.

All US Citizens positions are indeed open to all US Citizens. To get in at the GS-14 level he would have to make close to what the job is paying, work in an organization where his impact is similar.

All it would take for him to get bumped out is a retired LTCOL, Navy CDR or similar who just retired from running a PAO shop.

In Washington DC this is very likely.

All it would take to never work again is to not try very hard and to never apply. If this job made it to the open category that means it went internal and no one applied for it. It may have went out for vets and displaced employees and got no one either.

I am pretty sure the best way to stay unemployed is to not apply because someone might apply who has better skills.

My brother was far to skilled to to take an entry level job that topped out at 50% more than he was making when he got shit-canned. I found him a gig with better bennies and he would be vested in an actual pension in five short years, he refused. He sat on his ass from April 2011 until last year waiting on his big break. Now is is working in an HVAC parts warehouse for $17.50 an hour because he is a 59 year old idiot with no employment history for eight years. If he wasn't a douche he would be working in my field today.

Meanwhile, I retired from one job, took another one and make more than my governor. No retired LTC bumped me.

All US Citizens still must compete against anyone that is a veteran that applies. The veteran will retain veterans points. A VEOA candidate will trump a standard veteran. The 100% disabled generally compete in their own category for jobs. They are not able to trump VEOA unless there is some special hiring push to force this.

Any position open to a current civil servant, standard veterans benefits do not apply.

It is very difficult to compete as a non veteran, or non 100% disabled person in an all US Citizens position. There are sections of the government we are always hurting for. The biggest ones are certified medical practictioners (MD, RN, and so on) and engineers/scientist.

Saying that, I agree that you should apply for every position you are qualified for.

If you apply for a position with the United States Government through USA Jobs, keep in mind that you should never follow up or try to network. If you know someone that works in the Agency, include them as a reference (unless you think they are a shitbird).

Honestly, I prefer to not work for uncle Sam again unless it’s something I really really find interesting or unless it pays well. The ATF wanted to hire me years ago and I was pretty ecstatic about it until I found out that they wanted me in DC area sb wanted to pay $80k a year in DC!!!! That’s nothing there.

Hi,

OT but not really.

To the person that called my company from Professional Media Group in Clearwater Fl asking to speak to whomever handles our marketing!!

Are you really the ambulance chaser of your industry or what?

Why in the world would you lower yourself to actually contact my company based off my thread here in regards to trying to help someone out that has been let go of their job.

BAD TASTE and you should be ashamed of yourself!!!

O, and I know it was from this thread because there is NOWHERE else on the www that I mention anything about seeking, requesting or searching for digital marketing company.

Sincerely,
Theis

Send some prayers up for me. Had a super awesome interview yesterday that was 3 hrs long. Only time it got weird was when I met who I will be working with and the salary discussion. It might be a bit of a pay cut which sucks but it’s a good opp, will open some new horizons and get me out of my current lane a bit. So, send me some good vibes please gents!
