Tom is building new targets out to 2500 yds along with a new shooting pavilion. The new targets are not ready quite yet but the new pavilion is built.

The other berms for open range have steel and orange clays. Hitting an orange clay at 1,000 yds or beyond is quite fun.

That looks like a nice place.
And the prices aren’t bad at all.

I’m pretty lucky, I have a shooting spot like that just a short drive from my house.

What's the ETA of the 2500 yd steel?

I don't know for sure, that's up to Tom and he is very very busy building rifles and also maintaining the range right now.

I hope soon but I think he needs a dozer to build the berms first.

That is my best guess, wish I knew more. :)

An excellent place to shoot, My rifle would take 3.387 seconds to hit the 2500 yard target with 3074.2 pounds of energy yet on impact. This is my ELR rifle I use a Warner 416 with a 550 grain Flat Line bullet.

Cheers

I was there this past Saturday. The targets at 1mile are two 18" rounds on the ends...and a 12" square in the middle. There is steel past 1000 yards on the left side of the berm as well. Not pointed out in the pic is....lot's of 8" steel scattered randomly on both sides at various and seemingly random distances...

To the right of the photo is the 100yd zero lane for paper...and a pit for shooting hand guns.

I've been shooting here for 10 years or so...but I live 3.5hrs away...and it is worth the drive. I can't wait to taste some of the 2500yd steel there....soon.

Hi Gunny, Thanks for your input. What caliber(s) do you shoot?

For clartity, there are steel plates all over the property (200+) but the ONLY steel for Open Range days are illustrated in the picture above with berms and shot from the pavilion. The other steel on the property which do not have berms are shot from shooting positions other than the pavilion.

The pit, pictured below is fun for handgun or carbines. The targets are 100 - 80 yards from the designated shooting position. Classes will be held in the pit for handgun and carbine, contact Tom for more info on training classes.

For the long range stuff....300PRC.......then 308 out to 1000....and 6.5cm to 1200. That is usually all I bring on the long trek up from N. KY.

Range looks nice. Looking like a 8hr drive might have to ck this out and make a few trips a year.

Ok what's the turret on the top of the hill above the 1k target? Deer Stand?

Wish I could still shoot there but bad back and knee took me out of shooting prone. Would like to have tried the 2500 yard target. By the way, nice t-shirt.

That "tower" is a deer bind at the intinidator shooting position 4.

Yes and a deer feeder up there too. Too bad some people think it's a target and shot holes in it last year. Same with a deer feeder closer to the main pavilion but out out of the picture.

We have benches to shoot from for open range and you can use a tripod for our competitions.

That place doesn’t even look close to what it did 6-7 years ago when I came out to shoot there. It was a 2.5-3 hour drive from Dayton but well worth it to come blast the 50 at clay pigeons. I sure miss having a place like that to shoot. It looks great and one day, I’ll get back there again.

Did you visit after the tornado took the roof off the pavilion? I think it took a couple of years to get that replaced.

Talk about driving from Dayton, OH...Saturday I drove from Florence, KY to Middletown, OH....almost to where you are...and then my buddy drove from Middletown to Thunder Valley....shot 4 hours...and then reversed that trip....all total... 8 hrs in the car....but loved it.

Anyone know what it cost to reserve the whole range for a day? Or if they even will do that?

He does do that....I've never inquired about the cost....just call Tom or email him and he'll get you a price to rent the range....on a weekday.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try.

It didn’t even have pillars for a pavilion. The mile range was further to the right if I recall correctly and there was not an 1100 or 1200 target. You could back your rig up almost to the bench to unload. There were two shooting points around the 5 o clock that the owner would sit at and shoot a rifle sometimes. Maybe 100 yards or so.

I'm not surprised. We've had people from the city pick up their brand new fancy shooting stick, drive out to the country, park and just walk in the woods thinking they would just "go hunting."

Went out for the first time last summer. I live in Springfield, just northeast of Dayton. Really had a good time. Finally able to stretch my 6.5 RPR and LMT 224 Valk. Need to get back to break in my Origin build and MWS. With so many of us in the same area, we should get together and caravan. I'll chip in for a full range rental.

Where's the new pavilion in relation to the existing one? When did it go up?

I was there last on April 25th and didn't notice anything different.

I'm making the trek up from Eastern Ky on the 7th for Open Range day if anyone will be around. Just made my buddy go down the long range rabbit hole so will have him there learning as well as pushing myself out with my current set up.

Anyone know how many people can shoot there at one time during a open range day?

We've got a crew coming Saturday from Michigan and Indiana. Looking forward to seeing the new extended range!

When I arrived a few Saturday's ago....I was 'late'...I showed up around 10:20am instead of 10:AM sharp. 19 of the benches were already taken. There would have been 20 benches taken but #20 had lumber and stuff on it. I cleared that off and my buddy and I shot off #20. He was on the bench and I was on the ground shooting prone. There were people zeroing in their rifles...and friends taking turns shooting. I'd guess 50 people there. It didn't really feel cramped.

When I go...I talk a LOT...I talk much more than I shoot. However, maybe I should put a sticker on the back of my hat so when I'm shooting prone, people will know I'm Hide Member and at least will say Hi! Just look for a short guy shooting a big gun....probably me.

I shot yesterday at my local short range.....just couldn't get up the energy to drive 3.5hrs to join you guys today. I'll be dry firing and working on my body positioning for the next few weeks...then I should be at TVP for the 1 mile GBA event.

Does each bench have its own set of plates? Seems it would get confusing if multiple people shooting at the same plates.
Can you imagine the space needed and the cost for twenty sets of targets. Do not forget the paint for that many targets. Bring a GOOD spotter and you will be OK.

Not confusing at all...if you are shooting 600+ yards....lots of folks shooting the short stuff....and lots of puffs of dirt dancing around the 600yd target...but further out....you can generally have a target almost all to yourself.

Next time you go...take a break from what you are doing...and just walk around and observe. You will see some serious money in some rifles and scopes.....and you will see those same people shooting comfortably at 400-500 yards....and seemingly afraid to stretch it out farther in fear that they will actually miss a shot. You will also see a lot of dirt being kicked up at the 600 yard target and very few people trying 1000.

Many of us talk a lot of shit on these forums....and less can actually show up and do it. I just show up to practice and have fun.
