When I was playing Po-Po from 2009-2019, Im pretty sure we had a policy for that. But there's a "box" of sorts which at my agency we applied to our actions.
The 4 sides of the box where as long as your conduct was in the box, you're golden:
Moral
Legal
Ethical
Within Policy
I see people harp on policy and law day in and day out. There is far more to policing than words on paper... it takes a good heart, and a heart that's hard sometimes. Not losing your shit on the scene of a murder/suicide or some kid getting dismembered after getting hit by a car, or interviewing a child molester after you already saw the CCTV footage of the act(s)... and also in the same shift going to help an old lady turn off her sprinklers because she forgot how to for the 3rd time this month who had no familyor friends to help (she made the best oatmeal raisin cookies btw).
There were times when I was dealing with a suspect that a partner came up to me and said, "hey man, I got this, take a step back." And times where I did that for them.
There are times when you're dealing with people and you get tunnel vision, completely focused and whats directly in front of you and everything else seems like a blur. Thats when its incumbent on other officers to not just ask if you need help, but just step up and help.
Thanks for the reply and I know there are good LEO's out there. Most of the ones I know are small (or smallish) town LE.
Its a tough job and I honestly want to trust those entrusted to protect and serve. Unfortunately, my travels over the last decade make me leary of cops.
As a side note, even though I am struggling with the way today's policing is manifesting itself, I step off the sideline. About a month ago I was headed into town early evening on a drizzly day. I see a kid, maybe 15-18 sitting on the side of the road, soaking wet in a tee shirt and jeans. I call in a welfare check and by the time I find a place to turn around my truck the local police had shown up. One was kneeling down at the same level as the kid with his hand on the kids shoulder. The other LEO was on the other side with something like a small blanket that he was giving to the kid. Admittedly I only had about 20 seconds but those two LOE's were treating this kid with respect and dignity. I write up a quick note and dropped it off with a LT at the station commending the two officers. He said he would look them up and get them the recognition they deserve.
A few days later a got a note from the Chief thanking me for the positive input.
Still struggling to see much good in a lot of the policing out there but dang, if I am going to point out bad policing I am also honor bound to point out the good. So for those of you that did or are doing good police work thanks....... for those of you that sit by and let others go unchecked because you arent duty bound to intervene...... sth
