Ladies, Gentlemen & Hooligans alike, thanks for inviting me into the fold... it’s been a slow evolution getting my Rem 700 AAC-SD (.308) to a proper precision shooting format, but now with the addition of a new Gen I Vortex Viper PST 6-24, I’ve found myself with WAY more questions than answers!? I’m very excited to become a part of SniperHide; based on how I’ve spent the last 2-hours, it looks like I’ve found my new infernal time-suck...

Seems like a real proper good group of humans on the forum, & I’m very much looking forward to talking to - & learning from - you all! I find myself bouncing between the Roanoke area & Richmond on the reg, & would welcome the opportunity to connect & pull triggers with anyone between Rke & RVA... If we can just find somewhere to shoot beyond 100m (Good Grief!?)

In any case, thanks again for inviting me into the community - I’m excited to get to know some folks, learn & improve as a LRP shooter.

Cheers - s

Welcome from Middle Georgia. Hope you find the range. Always had them til I got here to Georgia. Strangest thing I've ever heard of. Gotta drive an hour unless I wanna pay 300-400 bucks a year bullshit. Here's to ya brother...

welcome from delaware , I am not sure where in wv you are in relation to where this place is but it could be an option if your close enough
either way good luck finding a range near you .

First off, props on the Cuda... I’m not a huge MOPAR guy, but the Cuda holds a special place in my heart!

I’m in Southwest VA, so Bang Steel is only about an hour or so from me - great instructional courses - not sure about what it takes to show up & shoot, but I need to look into it. There’s another place in Rocky Mount that boasts 800m (I think?), but the $80 entry fee for a day is a little cost prohibitive.

Nonetheless, thanks atcha Delaware - I appreciate the welcome!

Cheers Bro - I share your pain, trust... one private club close to me boasts 500m for around $400 / year with a long waiting list; another outside Richmond is worse...$250 to get on the waiting list - 2-year wait - & $500 / year for the pleasure... F’ that!?

We need some farm friends, clearly!

Hey Rōn, Welcome to Sniper’s Hide, enjoy the landscape. Lots of info no doubt, and convos fly here in different ways and subjects, read a lot to know where and when you want to hang and chat..... from SC. 🤙

Right on, Zorro - couldn’t be happier to join the cools kids... Thanks for the warm welcome!

I had one of the scariest experiences of my life in SC running Section IV of the Chattooga River in a white water kayak... then went to a lovely “juice bar” in Columbia to celebrate getting through the “Five Falls” in one piece...

All good in SC, bro - good times, good times

Welcome. The Hide is a veritable trove of knowledge, and occasionally wisdom. What do you do for a living?

Thank you, most sincerely, My Friend... as I said, I got lost in posts & articles for about 2-hours today - it was a welcome break from the grind of the day.

As for my vocation, grinding at the moment. I was... displaced... thanks to the pandemic, so I’m on a hard hunt. The last 12-years has had me designing VA State Parks to powder coating & cerakoting firearms, & marketing businesses to writing digital content & blogging... I’ve got this nasty need to do something that serves a purpose greater than myself at this point in my life. I have a very passionate calling to work with combat wounded vets in a recreational rehab setting, but the harder I try to get there, the longer & harder the path seems to get!?

Sorry for the epic reply to what should be a simple answer, but obviously that’s the fight I’m in right now... all the same, I appreciate you asking, truly. Your call sign - earthtrekker - strikes a deep chord with me... how about yourself? What do you do for work?

I’m Scott, for the record...

Thanks D - I appreciate your effort to say hello, & your warm welcome! I’m already enjoying being here, meeting folks, learning & tinkering with my R700 & new optic set up making tweaks to my configuration as I learn new tips, tricks & advice.

Good to hear. Do you have any grand plans for your rifle? I only ask because I’m guilty of being a tinkering gear whore

Good to hear. Do you have any grand plans for your rifle? I only ask because I’m guilty of being a tinkering gear whore

I get that, trust me.. I too am an epic gear whore & gadget geek. Sometimes I think I FSU on purpose just so I can fix it. I bought my R700 AAC-SD .308 (in bone-stock form) about two years ago when I got a little money in my pocket & contracted a case of “ghetto rich”; I wanted to spend money I should be saving but had some valid reasons to justify treating myself for once. Had a hard time deciding between a bolt-gun or a 300 blackout upper for my M4 & a class III permit for a suppressor. Shopping for the 300 AAC upper was... entertaining, but every time I switched gears to research the LRP bolt-gun, I got giddy like a kid... decision made.

So, in the last two years I’ve slowly - & selectively - upgraded the OEM set-up to something a bit sexier & more LRP capable: Bell & Carlson A-5 Tac Precision stock, upgraded to a single-stage 2.5# Timney trigger, DBM mod, & two “low-budget” scopes (< &200 each) that were moderately capable out to 200-300m, but no better.

Two Thursdays ago my new optics arrived (another ghetto-rich indulgent purchase, but one I couldn’t turn down); though I couldn’t afford the $1k price tag on the object of my scope-lust (Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25x50, MOA, FFL) I stumbled on a deal that was too good to turn down... EuroOptics.com was advertising brand new Gen ONE Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50, MOA, FFL for $550!? Granted, not $2,500 - $5,000 “high-end glass”, but an earlier model of the exact optic I wanted for almost half the price; my IRS stimulus check arrived WHILE I was looking at the bargain priced Gen I, & saw it as a sign... I pulled the trigger on the purchase that very minute.

So, long story told, my tinker obsession for the last week has been shopping / buying a new 20 MOA rail & tactical quality rings. adjusting eye relief, tweaking the adjustable cheek rest, as well as playing around with the best LOP for the buttstock / trigger pull & trying to establish proper vertical on the reticle... the next tinker on the docket is to establish a (semi-precise) zero; splurged on a .308 laser bore-site kit because it’s easier & more precise than a manual bore site, plus I was feeling lazy & - like you, D - am a certifiable gear whore when I can afford to be.

The “come to Jesus” reality of my R700 build that I refuse to submit to is that, for all intents & purposes, for all the love, tweak attention, time & money I’ve thrown at my sexy bitch in the last two years, I’ve got no “community” to shoot / learn from, & worst of all there’s no accessible place to shoot past 100m (that doesn’t require a membership with a $500 / year price tag). Best I’ve ever been able to do is about 200m along a power line corridor when I visited my brother in Maine over two years ago...

Point being, I’ve buried $2,000 (+/-) in an LRP rifle that’s capable of 800m all day long - especially now that I have proper glass (albeit “budget” proper) - but never had the chance to reach out past 200m but once, & NO options past 100m unless I join a club, or am willing to pay $80 for ONE day at an 800m range about an hour or so from me... I’ll spare you the weepy details of my current station in life, but needless to say after investing nearly $700 in a new optic set-up in the last week & a half, $80 for a day, plus match-grade ammo, is just not in the cards at the moment.

So there ya go, I’m such a lunatic gear whore that I’ve invested $2,000 (not discounting the pure joy I’ve gotten from building it, mind you) in an LRP rifle build that I can’t shoot past 100m on the reg... I just need a farmer friend, or to meet a rare, obscure “club member” willing to take me as a guest. Doesn’t make much (fiscal) sense, really, but to be honest... I don’t have much going on in my life that doesn’t burden me with stress, anxiety or worry on a daily basis, & that kind of daily grind is a real beatdown... the effort & mental passion that’s gone into this build - & the hope that I’ll eventually find good folks in an LRP community as well as a place to really reach out one of these days - has been my only real outlet to “refill the tank”... so, I keep paying, playing, researching & tinkering until the day I can do PROPER work with my R700.

There’s GOTTA be no shortage of opps to shoot at distance in CO!? What’s your go-to tool for LRPS, & what’s your latest tinker, D?

I have two toddlers and my wife and I are soooo close to being out of debt, except for house, that I haven’t bought shit lately. The extent of my money spent lately has been an 80% polymer ar9 that I may or may not have milled at work... and I’ve bought some stuff to start reloading. So far I’ve finished ~80 rounds of .40s&w and just bought primers and bullets to finish some .30-06 rounds. I need dies and bullets for .45acp and 9mm then I can get a bunch of those finished too, I already have primers and a universal-ish powder for the 3 common pistol rounds.

My medium term plans are to get my ar9 going, get at least a .300blk barrel for my ar15, ans/or remage my 700, in .30-06 to the same and hopefully another chambering, and convince my dad to remage a 700, in 7 rem mag, to 7 saum

Long term plans are to build my own rifle on a Mausingfield action. That’s about the only thing I have set in stone for that build

There are plenty of places in CO to get some distance, I just rarely have time to get out. Hopefully when my sons are a few years older they will take an interest in guns and we can shoot some rimfire stuff when we go camping

The whole ar9 concept is one of the coolest “new” trends in firearm platforms in a long, long time, in my opinion. I worked at a local gun shop & range for a while last year, & they have several upper platforms as well as complete builds in everything from the standard .223 & 300-blk to ar9 that they build & sell... bare in mind they’re building them, but they’re not doing any milling at all. They have some company who mills all the lowers & just laser engraves their name / brand on them, collect the pieces & parts from popular manufacturers, complete the build & call it theirs... I actually had the chance to fire a full-auto ar9 on their range & it was a F’ing HOOT to shoot!? Holy shit, it was AWESOME!! Even controlling the muzzle rise that’s typical with any full-auto weapon was pretty manageable... The ar9 being the first full-auto weapon I had ever fired, I realized quickly that it truly does take some time behind the trigger to become comfortable firing one. A knuckle-dragging dumbass in the company of friends that he wants to impress who has a “Hey y’all, watch this” moment can do some serious damage to the mechanical works of an indoor range in a hot-second!? Muzzle rise - even with a medium caliber round like a 9mm - is inevitable until / unless they learn to mitigate the rise & trigger control... Good luck & have fun with that! I might try & get one myself one of these days.

Sounds like your jumping into reloading full-tilt! I’d love to get into it myself but I don’t get to shoot enough right now to justify the investment (& because I’m broke). But if the time ever comes that I can start trigger pulling my .308 at 500-1000m on the reg, that’ll be the point where I begin reloading my growing collection of .308 brass; .223 & 9mm as well.

Glad to hear you & your fam are working wisely to eliminate your debt, D - meanwhile most of the country is feeling “ghetto rich” with their gov’t assistance from unemployment, on top of maxing out credit cards & accruing debt at alarming rates. Those choices come with a terminal deadline where all of a sudden the bottom drops out & they're financially fuct... what I don’t understand is how in the HELL people go through that with zero fucks to give; maybe I worry too much - it is after all generally speaking the “Murican way”. Thankfully for me, even though I’m broke & living check to check, I’m almost 100% debt-free (sans some child support arrears I owe on, & am paying down diligently)... no credit cards, car loans, mortgages, or loan sharks; since my divorce, I’ve made it my SOP to live simply & within my means (so when I DO have a little extra scratch, I can throw a little at a new Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 for my long gun.)

Be well, My Friend - good conversation!

Btw, I’m happy for you about your toddlers... being a father is far & away the most significant element in my life; I never TRULY understood what it meant to love until my girls came along... changed my life in every possible way, even on the worst, hardest of days & most challenging of circumstances. Another reason i give you sincere props for your debt-elimination goals!

Welcome to the Hide. It's rough finding a good range in SWVA. Luckily I work alot in Middle TN so I go to Dead Zero (1000 yd) when I'm working. There's a 200yd in Blacksburg, haven't been there though since there's not much I can do at 200 I couldn't do at 100. There's a 600 yd in Saltville that I'm thinking of looking into but it's a club. I feel the $125/ year price tag reflects on the condition of the range based on the photos though. I am going to check out Bang Steel if for nothing else than picking Dan Newberrys brain.

Thanks for the reach out, Jordan - I appreciate it! By the sound of it, you’re pretty familiar with the sparse options for LRPS in the Blue Ridge... Are you local to Roanoke? I’m pretty familiar with Bang Steel, but only via their website & word of mouth. As much as I’d love to take one of his courses, that’s way beyond my means right now.

Thanks again, Jordan - it’s great to make your acquaintance!

I'm not overly familiar with Roanoke. I've been over there a few times many years ago. I live in Galax, VA. Just moved back here from Washington State a few years ago. I'm always on the search for a good range and a good reloading shop. I found a good reloading shop when I first moved back but since have forgotten where it was and what it was called. Seems like it may have been on the outskirts of Roanoke.

Proper places to shoot around Roanoke past 100m - as well as within a reasonable driving distance - is damned near impossible to find unless you’re willing to pay (excessively) for the privilege. There is a place in Rocky Mount called Pig River Precision that is open to the public as I understand it, & you can shoot steel there out to 1000m+. The rub (for me at least) is that they want $80 for the day; I don’t know if that’s $80 per party (as in a party of 2-3?) for a bench for the day, or if it’s $80 / shooter.

I checked their website & saw no pricing listed, but I will say this... it looks like a VERY cool place to shoot!! 12 different firing position options (IE - prone, bench, tires & obstacles, etc.); also looks like they hold comps there as well as having “open range” days. Check 'em out at

As for reloading - as in well-stocked with all the necessary goods - the options are slim from what I’ve seen... & I’ve visited almost every shop in the area. The only place I’ve been that seems to fit that bill is a place called Trader Jerry’s in Salem, VA (first three exits off I-81 as you head to Roanoke). They have no website, but if you look them up, you can give them a call. From what I could tell the last time I was there, their selection of reloading supplies was well-organized, plenty of “boxed” bullet options from hunting to Sierra Match grade, primers, brass, powder, you name it. The only thing they were short on was reloading equipment as I recall.

it’s a “mom & pop” type store - the quality of customer service you get from their employees was marginal at best, but friendly enough. Since you’re all the way down in Galax, I’d recommend calling with specific questions about exactly what you’re looking for & if they have it before you make the trip. I don’t know for sure, but they might be willing to ship stuff like that, I just don’t know...

Other than that, every other shop I’ve been to in the area has a half-assed selection at best. Reloading is kind of a niche market for these stores that I imagine has a low profit margin & limited “come what may” interest from their regular customer base... Trader Jerry’s is about the only proper place I know of...

For the record, I’ve worked at several different gun shops between Roanoke & Richmond, so I’m familiar with what a proper reloading supply looks like vs a half-assed, just for show selection that’s almost worthless...

Trader Jerry’s in Salem, bro... give ‘em a call. Also check out Pig River in Rocky Mount. If the practicals are right (IE - price, good options for open range days, et al) I think it would be worth the day trip for you to shoot steel at a nice facility, with a variety of shooting station options, at 1000m or more.

I'll have to check those places out. The best place I've found so far for reloading is a place in Central TN called Outpost Armory. They have alot of everything. I generally stock up pretty heavy when I'm working down there. I'll have to look into that range. $80/ day is a bit much but if they have a somewhat reasonable membership fee it would work.

Definitely worth a look... Check out the Pig River website - I think you’ll be impressed with their facility; I cant speak to pricing though 🤔

Pigg River has "open range days" periodically, and price is per person. They are usually posted on the FB page as to when they are happening, and sign up is through Practiscore. It's pretty limited, and sells out quick. IIRC the last one sold out in under 10 min.
Having been there a time or two, it's one of the nicest ranges you could shoot a match at.

Thanks for the additional data on Pig River - based on the quality of their website, what I could glean from the photo’s & the detailed information that they provided, I don’t doubt that it’s well-above average compared to the alternative options in the area, & likely is top-notch when compared to the best of the best about anywhere!?

On a separate note - for curiosity & interest sake - can I assume that you work as a trainer of (LE?) service / security dogs? If so, I’d love to hear more about it, & pose a few questions... if you’re willing & able, that is.

No, I'm not a K9 trainer. I just have a Malinois that's about 60% house dog, 40% idiot  . I'd be happy to answer any questions, however, @BLKWLFK9 would be someone with far greater knowledge of working K9s. He's got an awesome podcast series (Just Fn Sendit Podcast) on Podbean.
Feel free to shoot me a pm anytime.

Funny... my boy is 50% German Shep, 50% Hound, & 100% knucklehead. That said, he’s my best pal, bed mate, snuggle pup, & support group all in one big, hairy, shedding package.

Reason I asked is because I’m on a new career quest (at 50) & would rather be with my dog than 99% of the people I meet or know. I’m asking a lot of questions - of myself, as well as others - at the moment hoping to find my purpose; a purpose greater than myself. I’ve raised two stellar boys in my lifetime so far (with significant time, effort & attention) & think very often about working with dogs... I’m just afraid that the money isn’t there, & given what’s at stake for flipping this shit-show life I’m living right now, sadly, money is an issue.

Working with combat wounded vets - or in support of working dogs - is a path that I’ve spent a lot of time obsessing over, but the harder I try to follow that path, the more doors I get shut in my face or completely ignored all together... maybe it’s time to take the hint & focus on other opportunities... the rub is that I seem to be cursed with being a round peg trying to fit into a square world that’s not like me; that effort has cost me far more than I ever thought I was capable of losing without giving up the ghost, yet here I am... still pluggin’...

I appreciate the offer to PM - even though I’m a new member of SnipersHide, I’m sincerely blown away & humbled by the quality of the people I’ve met so far... proper good humans, every one of them so far!? ...you’re no exception, My Friend. I truly appreciate the chat - thank you 🙏

Thanks, My Friend - I really appreciate that! It’s still a little shocking to me how many really good people have reached out since I joined, & how many stellar conversations I’ve had with members from coast to coast. I’m real happy to be here, & I’m grateful for your shout out!

Cheers - Scott
