Thunder Valley precision

Will be at TVP as soon as it open tomorrow getting some rounds down range on a new setup if anyone is around and wants to hangout! I'll be the guy in a dark blue "We the People" shirt shooting a Savage 110 HS Precision.

Not confusing at all...if you are shooting 600+ yards....lots of folks shooting the short stuff....and lots of puffs of dirt dancing around the 600yd target...but further out....you can generally have a target almost all to yourself.

Next time you go...take a break from what you are doing...and just walk around and observe. You will see some serious money in some rifles and scopes.....and you will see those same people shooting comfortably at 400-500 yards....and seemingly afraid to stretch it out farther in fear that they will actually miss a shot. You will also see a lot of dirt being kicked up at the 600 yard target and very few people trying 1000.

Many of us talk a lot of shit on these forums....and less can actually show up and do it. I just show up to practice and have fun.

I seemed to notice this yesterday. A couple gentlemen had setups 5-6k before accounting for the Gen3 Razor HD to top it off, and they were seemingly happy just shooting steel at 600.

Meanwhile, I’m over here with the basics, Savage 110, Diamondback Tactical, and FGMM and l got a new record for myself. 3 of 5 rounds center mass on a 1000 yard sillohuette. (Kinda new to the long range stuff so I’m happy.)

That being said that’s what I think is neat about this hobby. As long as your interested in actually learning the science and fundamentals, there are price points for every person if they’re comfortable with paying said price. And MOSTLY people are very welcoming.

The new pavilion sits on a small mound, is to the left and a little behind the main pavilion. A new dirt berm isolates the two pavilions from each other.

Where's the new pavilion in relation to the existing one? When did it go up?

I was there last on April 25th and didn't notice anything different.

Good question. 20 benches and an equal amount of prone positions under the main pavilion. The new pavilion will have 5 benches and several prone positions. The new arena has three shooting positions. Plus a 100 sight-in target with one bench and prone positions too.

Anyone know how many people can shoot there at one time during a open range day?

No but there are 4inch orange clays on every berm.

I regularly shoot at clays on the 1000 yd berm. Much more of a challenge than a 12x12 steel plate at 1000yds. :)
Try alternative positions

Awesome. I did see the pistol pit and steel uspsa targets. Guess I'm gonna have to drag my carry optics rig and couple hundos of 9mm as well.

I'm going to TVP either Wed or Thur this week...to practice some 1 mile stuff....and some load development on the 250 A-Tips...if anyone wants to meet up.

Is this range open 7 days a week usually?

If you go to their website and look at the Schedule you will usually see Open Range days on a Saturday and/or Sunday...with the events taking some of the weekends. If you want to shoot during the week...just call...or email. If he isn't out cutting the field with the tractor...or doing work on the berms...or heck...even taking a vacation....then you can call and if says yes...he will be there...then you can shoot regular hours for the regular price.

I'll be there somewhere around 10am tomorrow to get rid of some 4 day old powder ;)

Also...going in the middle of the week if you can...is the way to go. When it is warm outside...it can get really crowded on the weekends.

Looking at dec 2/3. Driving from upstate NY to Iowa for a whitetail hunt. Range isn't to far off interstate 90/80.

Cool, how much is it? hourly or daily rate?

How much to rent out? I could probably never get my unit to do it, but we get MWR funds and could make the trip to sling some lead, we have a few shooters and a lot of hunters.

Need to stretch the 338 LM AI out...

Regular rates... $20 for members and $30 for non members...don't know about renting out the entire range or training days...never asked about that.

Cheap compared to my local rates. I think $30 a day for nonMembers

What is the max distance?
Currently you can shoot two 18" round pieces at 1 mile...and hopefully the 12" square plate is back up at 1 mile....so I think I have this right:

Steel with berms behind at:

200
300
400
500
600
700
1000

Steel to the right of the 1000 large berm at:

1100
1200

Steel at 1760 yards.

Soon to be another berm built at I think 2200 yards...don't know if there needs to be a qualification to shoot that distance...from another shooting location.

Cool,,, just got confirmation, the range is closed that week for deer season.

I couldn’t find descriptions of the events on the TVP website. I figured out that GBA is the Global Benchrest Association, but what is the Head Hunter?

Driving out on 7/31 shooting 8/1. Anyone one else planning on shooting 8/1?

Awesome time at TVP. My buddy took his 6.5 CM out to mile w Hornady factory 140. Im not a CM fan but i do have a new found respect for the cartridge. Friday evening we had 3 directional wind (full flag wind on the first 2 flags and 1/4 flag at a mile) and he was able to make multiple hits at a mile. I ran my 338 LM AI w some Hornady 285 ELD and Berger 300 OTM. Berger's won the battle. Made many hits at a mile but the 300 Berger's were more constant w min vertical.

Saturday morning we had much calmer conditions. 6.5 CM, 7 Max and 338 LM AI all had multiple hits at the mile mark. Looks like the 2500 target is set up and hope to get out w the 338 LM AI.

So, I get a call Saturday while I was at work. It was the frantic ramblings of one of my steel plate buddies at TVP....seems someone was out their smacking him around real good. He asked if I could please stop...I was like..."Steely...I'm at work dude... 3 and a half hours away...it ain't me...so deal with it." Dude was crying. @BCX I guess you hit him hard and often. I'll show up in two weeks and really pound his ass.

338 LM AI w 300 Berger's hits hard at a mile. 14 mil elevation. Looked like a few people were attempting to shoot at paper at a mile. Seen random shots dropping short off to my right.

My spare barrel should be here in a few months. Bartlein GT finished at 1-8 for Warner Flatlines. I will have it ready for the spring and hope to make it for some 2500 yard shooting.

Usually what people are doing...is they think those big target backers at 1 mile...are the actual steel targets....and they can't understand why the steel doesn't move when they think they shoot them. The 18" steel rounds....you can hear when you hit them....many seconds later.

On the Bartlein...don't forget to get the NEW 400MOD material....will probably double the round life of your barrel.

Maybe one day I'll see you out there...and my 300PRC and your 338 LM AI can battle it out at some distance.

The 400modbb isn't available yet in a 1.350-1.450 shank yet. Spoke w Frank and will be ordering one ASAP. Building my son a 300 PRC/300 WM 2 barrel setup on a Surgeon 1086 w AIAX chassis. Dropped the parts off w Mark @ SAC Friday morning before heading to the range.

Hahahaha that was definitely me. I had no idea. There’s no orientation! I also went through 33 rounds from the 7 SAUM before discovering the scope rail was loose. All a good learning experience.

That was you on Sat shooting at the paper backers? I was wondering what was going on. That was my first time shooting there and its pretty relaxed. We got the last hour in on friday before closing time. Dropped $60 in and shot. Our local long range charges $30 a hour.

I used to think the following comment was complete and utter bullshit...until I did it too..... wait until you are breaking clays at 1 mile! ZCO 5-27...was set on 18x and the mirage disappeared...bam....clays broken.
