What's the most stupid thing you've been told?

The thing is though, those winning 1k yard br matches ARE testing at 1k.

I like the cortina thread but its mainly a introductory thread for new loaders to keep them from going off the rails and to control what factors they are able to, once you have a bit of time and you really want to know the results you sort of have to test at distance to validate the findings and optimize.
^^^^^^This is what I learned.

Okay, so before anyone gets their parties all in a twist, let’s just go ahead and clear up the issue a bit. There is a specific difference between how one should approach load development for long range multi distance PRS and field style matches and how to approach when shooting 600 or 1000 yard bench rest matches. If one is arguing against the other, it’s very likely that you are both right and both wrong at the same time.

The simplest way it can be said is that field match shooters are looking for a load that is robust in both lack of variation in differing conditions and one that gives them acceptable on target results at distances from 25-1300 yards. The bench rest shooter is looking for a load that is specifically dialed in at their target distance (be that 600 yards or 1000 yards). They both start with the same basic concept to get a solid load, but the finer points of load development are different between the two.

Once you recognize those differences, then you can go ahead and argue all you want about the basic load development process.

You gain no velocity in a 338LM with a barrel over 24 inches. Or any other rifle for that matter. The things you hear in a LGS.

Saw a guy at the LGS ask ask if they bore sight scopes, employee said yes, guy goes out to his vehicle and comes in with just a scope in a box, hands it to the worker, he asked where is your rifle and the guy said “ the rifle shoots great I just need the scope sighted in”. He left in a bit of a huff after all the laughter died down.

A guy who shoots 600 yard bench rest explaining the reason he was 12" low at a new range. The new range shoots to the east and normally he shoots north. Doesn't know what this phenomenon is called but knows it's a thing. He declares this phenomenon the reason his point of impact was not what he expected.

Doesn't everyone know about vertical coriolis?

Bumping.

Heard on a podcast talking about diamonds. They were talking about lab grown diamonds for industrial uses vs diamonds from the ground for rings and crap. Host lady talks about diamond coated "knives for cutting the aluminum for iPhones."

This doesn't look like a knife to me.

“You aren’t allowed to shoot 22lr past 150, because you have to aim above the berm and that’s dangerous”........

Been there.... bet the RO $100 or I leave for good on a cold range call except for me shooting. Put 10 in less than an inch at 100 Yards, packed up my gear and told him to keep his money... and his Fudd-ass range.

I was confirming dope on a new lot of ammo so had targets set up out to 300. Once he realised what I was shooting he came waddling over in his orange jacket bitching about how you aren’t allowed to shoot 22lr out that far, so I finished knocking over all my little steel animals right in front of him, packed up my gear and went home.

Dude was probably just pissed because his fat ass and bench full of brand name “shooting aids” got outshot by some scruffy looking motherfucker proned out in the dirt with a rimfire.

So...if you set a target at 25, but the bullet travels 100 or more, are you banned?

"A .45 ACP will knock you on your ass/awesome knockdown power". Don't know how many times that has been regurgitated to me over the years.

The .50 cal tearing limbs/head off just passing by within a foot or two as well.

Mostly it was just outlandish tales of accuracy once they found out that I was/am (definitely not practicing) an 8531 (0931 now) and shot competitively a little. I've been around the best marksman in the U.S., and none of those guys could ever do some of the tales that I was being fed.
45acp will knock a man down if it hits his hand, is an oldie but goodie!

When discussing a preventative maintenance cycle... “I just bring it in when the light comes on.”

I’ve been told before that a .22 long rifle is one of the most dangerous calibers because it’s small enough that it bounces off bones and ribs and ends up “pin balling” around your rib cage puncturing your vitals from multiple directions. 😂😂

File that under a .50cal not needing to hit you in order to rip off limbs.

There's a slight bit of truth to that, but it can happen with all cartridges. Bullets can hit bone at the right angle, deflect, and travel in a direction inconsistent with their original path. It's fairly common to see, but what started as truth has been distorted over the years to make these bullets somehow capable of defying the laws of physics

I remember a Medical Examiner telling us that about the 223 back in the academy. Probably more true than 22
