A Meme was posted saying that Andrew "killer of the Old" Cuomo will be the highest paid Governor in the US OF A.

So I took a look - https://nypost.com/2020/01/28/top-cuomo-aide-rakes-in-a-higher-paycheck-than-her-boss/
Yes- The Grandmother Killer will go up to $250K next year....

Is $250K much money to Govern a state?

Here is the Transparent California Salry Data

The UC System in 2018- ( UC Berkeley, UCLA, etc)

The first 36 pages- sorted by Salary make over $250K
(50 names on a page * 36 Pages =1,800 people)

How can the University of California system have over 1,800 people making more in Salary than the top paid Governor in the US OF A?

Heck - We have over 50 Police Chiefs making over $250K in CA

https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/search/?q=police+chief&y=&s=-base

Almost 150 Fire Chiefs with Salary over $250K

'...many recall the famous story from 1930, when Babe Ruth signed a contract that paid him $80,000 a year. When Ruth was asked if he thought he deserved to be making more money than President Hoover, he said, “'Why not? I had a better year than he did.”'

Salaries are based on perceived worth to that organization. It seems that there are 1800 people in the UC system that are worth more to that system than Cuomo is to NY State. And, you need to account for cost of living differences across the nation. 250k in NYC is much different than it is in Des Moines Iowa...

They aren’t paying that much because they have to, they’re paying that much because they can. Professors making north of $2.5M/yr? Yeah, sure they’re worth that...

And folks say war is a racket.

When a professor in a research discipline (chemistry, physics, biology, etc) gets a grant to operate their lab, the university gets an equal amount to cover the operating expenses of hosting that professor. Professors that are making bank are not getting paid by the university system. They are on "hard money" ie, they have research grants that pay for their salaries and that of their grad students and post docs. Professors that are on "soft money." ie, getting paid directly by the university are living a tenuous existence, and are not making bank. Publish or perish is the way at University, because without publications you don't have grants. And, without grants you don't have a job. Professors at the top of their game are worth the cost to universities because they pay for themselves, and bring in a windfall every time they get a grant.

And in fairness, Berkeley is the #1 public university in the nation, and if you look at their grad schools they rank right up there in the top 5 overall.

I work in higher ed. The money is good, and the hours aren't bad either. $150-250k is not uncommon in our system, and there are plenty of $300k+ positions. Grant money can be a nice supplement, but to completely understand it you have to understand the "R" sturcture of universities. A professor at an R-1 university might teach one class per semester and spend the rest of their time doing research. A professor at an R-3 might teach 3-4 classes per semester with less expected research. The R-1 institutions are where the big money is.
