Can anyone identify this action? No one I've talked to has run across a bolt release like this before. The only visible markings are the serial number and the caliber stamp on the barrel. Any help is appreciated.

My apologies, I was looking at the next pic of the left side of the action. What you see on the right side of the rear of the bolt looks clearly to be a Win 70 style safety.
No worries, I figured that is what you were referring too. I have not seen a bolt release like that, or can’t remember one if I have. I know they make the m70 safety for many guns including Mauser, Zastava, and some others. The bolt releases don’t look like that though, unless someone modified a Mauser 98 bolt release because the action looks like one of those a lot. Like @Anadarko11 said, it looks like a Mauser clone.

Thank you everyone that has chimed in so far. I guess there could be some sort of markings or crest under the scope mount. I really didn't see any. I'm going to back and look at it again today.

Next question...is there much out on the market for upgrade parts, like modern scope mounts or trigger parts?

Am I allowed to post prices and ask for values on here? (I'm trying to buy it, I'm not selling it)

What you do is get Weaver bases and they will accommodate any Picatinny or Weaver rings. The drilled and tapped holes should in one way or another fit something Mauser with Weaver bases.

If not, it's a trip to the gunsmith for $50 a hole. So, 2 holes at most. You can use the ones already there for front or back hole.

Just for shits and giggles I looked around yesterday. IF and that is IF it is a Husky, Huber used to make a trigger as well as Timney in the way back whens. You might be able to find either of of those for it. Some interweb rumor even says the Husky and Mauser stuff is interchangeable, BUT you have to do your own leg work there, don’t just take my word. I have a Mauser from the 20s, but it is in Arkansas and I’m in NC so can’t look at it for you, and as previously stated have never owned a Husky rifle.

Some Husqvarna and Mauser stuff are probably interchangeable. Swedish Mauser and certain Husky models, possibly Mauser 98 and certain Husky? But I'm not sure when they stopped doing what were basically commercial Mausers and started their own versions. No idea what would interchange between, say, a Mauser 98 and a Husky 1640.

I'm afraid the crown, if present, is completely hidden by the scope mount. I did a 2nd passthrough on the rifle yesterday and still couldn't tell any more than when I took the pics.

The pawn shop is asking $399. What can't be seen in any of the original pics I took is a second (and third) scope mount drill hole in the barrel with either a broken screw or drill bit in one. It's like they missed on measuring and figured they'd just move to the outer edge of the hole they just drilled.

$399 for a custom .257 Roberts... just buy it and worry about what it is later! Great cartridge. You can’t get a nice action for that. Just snap it up and enjoy it or restore it into a really nice custom!

Sounds like a solid endorsement. I'll post some better pics when I get it.

Thank you all for your help so far. Hopefully once in hand it's easier to ID.

A little while ago, I got a reply on the other forum. Gentleman said it looks like a rebarreled High Standard rifle. Which may or may not be an imported Husqvarna or some other brand.

EDIT: He says it's a High Standard that was originally chambered for .30-06 and built, as we suspected, on a Husqvarna action.

I pretty much suspect a Husqvarna action too. The two/three(?) position safety could well be a Gentry. They made two- and three-position Winchester 70 style safeties for aftermarket customizing.

The bolt release doesn't quite look like the Husqvarna's in the pics I've been looking up, but a possibility of that being customized too. Just like someone might add more material to a hinged floorplate release. Argentina inplemented the idea in 1909, but it was pretty hard to release. When smiths started building them up with weld and then knurling them, they were useful. I could see this happening with that release.
