I was wrong....My M1A needed something to shoot better.

I needed to replace the sight spring cover because the drum was free wheeling losing zero.

Took it to the range to get it back in service....

Used FGMM 168s I bought off a coworker abandoning the 7.62 flavor for something in the 6.5 category....sad. Ammo struck me as weird - no primer sealant.

    But......

It shot okay. First shot with the disassembled/reassembled rear sight was the high left 7. Shot 2 was an X, I thought I was an M1A sight adjustment savant. Shot 3 was the 9 oclock 9. Another sight adjustment and everything else was 10 or X.

This is the bridge leading to the target boards.....

Someone needs a USMC unitized gas cylinder, or a Coast Guard muzzle break, or maybe a Sadlak/Smith National Match piston, Maybe NM sights?

    No too bad (y)

Is that an Argus Super Grade spotter?

Old Tech all the way around and still good results. Sign of a Rifleman.

Golf balls being shot off the bridge?

    Nope just bad marksmanship.

There is rumor that on occasion a belt fed is used to "cut" the wetland weeds and prevent their blocking target views.....maybe but that would be off a tripod and shot more responsibly I assume.

Besides having decent glass this one has local history as it was owned by local businessman Weir W. McDonald who won the Weatherby Award in 1968. It's traveled all over the world.

Sorry for thread jacking, hopefully you like history.

Sir, for you not to have posted that would have been criminal.

Recently someone was on here looking to buy a "cheap" spotter.

My suggestion was going to Ebay and buying some relatively "inexpensive" high quality vintage glass rather than something cheap.

That Argus is FaShizzle and the history only makes it more so.

Hmmmmm, wonder what happened to the Afghanistan hunting program in 1979?

I understand it was restarted October of 2001.

The Argus glass is impressive considering the age.

Talked with a collector friend today, during the conversation I asked him about his M1A's and he said he's down to 2, one open sights and one with Leupold 10x on it...... he said one could be bought. Damn you for making it tempting! 😖 😁

Get the one without glass assuming it's "issue" configuration, it is much funner than the Garand to shoot and the Garand is pretty fun.

I'll try to get out to 300 soon now my sights are GTG.

My son just got a springfield version a couple months ago. I sighted it in and took it out to 550. Had a blast. I had forgot how much I liked these.
