Hey all.
Hoping someone knows more about the rifle or others here. I want the new AT-X, I’ve never owned an AI but always wanted one.
First is magazines. Will regular AICS mags fit into it or is it only the AI double stack mags? I want to find a magazine that holds 12 rounds for PRS and want to know my options.
Next is barrels. I’m not a fan of 6.5 Creedmoor and have nothing to reload for it at all. I currently run a 6mm Creed for PRS but would be ok with a .308 for Tac Division as well. From the looks the new AT-X has a heavier than normal profile so what barrel contour or like options could I get for a barrel in either 6CM or .308Win?
Last is rifle components, like the barrel shroud that goes over the barrel on top of the handguard. I haven’t been able to find a solid availability date. Mile High said summer sometime. Because I want a folding stock and that barrel shroud for sure

thanks for your time, and putting up with the probably lame questions.

I would say right now that buying an AT-X is a bit of a risk. A list of accessories is not out yet, or even a tentative timeline of availability. Much less a pricing schedule for the accessories. The AT mag is the shorter double stack with welded floor plate. No real options for a 12 rd mag. I think it takes some mag latch fitting to get an AICS to work but then it might very well be jenky and your AT mags will no longer feed.

I agree, having to buy a 6.5 Creed barrel you don't want is going to be a thing with the AT-X. There are no other barrel options, right now. Other than buying a second aftermarket barrel.

Honestly, for PR competition, especially if you're relatively new to it, I'd still advise someone to just build the ol' number 6. Impact/ Terminus/ Bighorn action, one of 3 common popular, common chassis/ stocks, prefit barrel, etc
Yeah I’d been pricing out an impact/foundation build I just have way more familiarity with a chassis type rifle. I’d say I’m novice at PRS. Have about a dozen matches or so under my belt and have an idea of what I want for it at least. Spending that much on any rifle I like the adjustability of the Chassis so where I could collapse the buttstock for my wife or son of they wanted to shoot as well if needed where as a foundation stock would be awesome but doesn’t adjust like that. Just so many pro and cons either way

You do realize that 3 and 4 way adjustable buttplates have available for conventional stocks long before chassis were a thing?

Chassis have often a modularity advantage. But when it comes to user ergonomics, conventional stocks can be made just as adjustable.

I've had target rifles with laminated wood and fiberglass stocks that had almost a full two inches in LOP adjustment, as well as adjustable buttpad height and angle, comb height, and comb lateral offset.

I will second this.

Build a rifle. LP Fuzion (or your action or choice, Terminus if 3 lug), put it in a KRG W3 Competition chassis, spin up a barrel with your desired cartridge, + other components and call it a day.

I'm going to go against the popular opinion here and recommend you just get the AT-X. Even after you buy the custom rifle you talk yourself into buying, you will still want the AI.

I'm sure you could sell the 6.5CM barrel fairly easily on the Buy-Sell-Trade Forum and get a prefit from PVA or Proof Research with the sale proceeds. I think the AT-X is going to use the same barrels as the AT and AX, so you shouldn't have a problem selling the factory barrel and buying a prefit. Might want to double check that, I could be wrong about it.

You are correct, information regarding accessories is non-existent at this point, but I'm sure it will be $$$$.

I wanted to go the AI route myself, but @reubenski hit it in the head. Take a look into a Bighorn Origin BA from Keystone with a GM barrel, KRG Bravo, TT special, and if you can find it, the Midway Bushnell DMRii would be a nice way to start out. (This is the route I went).

Put the other cash into finding ammo and taking a class.

While I’m not a fan of the new AT-X design, if you’re on the fence just get it. If you end up not liking it, you can sell it and go the traditional route. You won’t lose much as AIs retain their value very well. Any lost bucks can be viewed as a rental/trial fee.

The barrel can easily be sold as it’s the same as the current AXSA/AT barrels.

It’s always better to go for it and see if it’s for you, rather than to live on going “what if” lol

Ballpark guess is the folding adapter for the stock and shroud is probably $200 each and to get 4-6 weight sets are probably $75 each going by MDT weight prices. Probably a solid $700 extra on top of the price of the rifle. Which is over a grand more than a full custom impact action, foundation/manners,MDT with all the trimmings like Arca rails, bottom metal, triggers to get it to AI level. Probably looking at $6k grand total just rifle for the AI and $4,500 grand total for the custom

Duh! If you really want and can afford the AI get the AI. Every time I've settled for a "more affordable option" I've sold it and bought what I wanted in the first place. Cry once:)

I feel this lol. Anymore I’m trying to adopt the “I can’t afford to buy cheap shit” because I always end up fighting it or hating and selling it for a loss anyways

I bet the AI accessories will cost more than that. It's AI. The cost will be a bit unreasonable and that alone will convince people they "have" to have it. It's top tier after all.

Don't get me wrong, I bought a $3K AT, melted it out of the chassis, bought an MPA folder for it for $1200, paid $200 to have it machined and bedded, then turned around and bought the AI Obsession chassis, the AX butt stock conversion, and the GTAC grip conversion and the Comp trigger. That's $2500 for the chassis alone. $7300 on the rifle and 2 chassis and then $2K in barrels. And it's not even my main comp gun. Or my back up. Just a fun expieriment. It's not lost on me that when I slide the loaded gunbox in the back of the truck there's $12,000 in it.

Also, calling an Impact in a Foundation or MDT ACC with a Diamond and pretty much the same barrel the "affordable" option just shows how AI's mind games work, lol. Like doe scent during the rut.

I'll probably buy an AT-X one day, but if this is your only comp gun and you don't even know when you're going to be able to buy the comp accessories or what the total cost is when complete as you compare it to the current competition rifle build...then I think there is some unknown there.
All solid points too. I don’t think I will regret either one but I know I’ll always wonder about whichever I don’t get.

I sold my AT awhile back to bring in some funds, and I still regret it. I’m rocking an FN SPR A5M XP right now and like it for what it is, but it’s no AI. I will have another someday if the economy ever recovers... I haven’t shot anywhere close to everything out there, but the AI was so much smoother than anything I’ve ever tried to date, and it was “just a lowly AT.”

Like others have said, you won’t have a hard time moving it if you decide it isn’t for you.

Bought a Ruger Precision, liked it. Sold the Ruger and went custom with a Mausingfield in a JAE. Sold it and bought an AT. Liked it and spent $800 0n the skeleton stock upgrade. Sold it and bought an AXSA, sold it and bought an AXMC. Think how much I would have saved if I just went with what I wanted in the first place. :)

The AI guys are coming out to Quantico's first ever PRS match tomorrow. I'll take some pics of the AT-X for you. Which means I'll be fighting the urge to order one for myself. ;)

Totally an AI fan boy so take this for what it's worth.
I've gone the "cheap" route before and like others have said, I always sell that stuff at a loss and then buy what I was after in the first place. I've learned my lesson. Not saying dropping the coin on a solid well picked out parts build is going cheap by any means. However, after getting an AT (a completely blind purchase by the way), I have yet to find a rifle I am more comfortable behind. While they are expensive you don't have to wait 6+ months for a build and you know damn well that the AI will work.
If you got the money buy the AT-X to try out. Odds are you can flip it for close to what you'll pay for it new or wait for a few to show up on the PX a few months after they are released.

Or wait for the new AT-X owners to dump their short actions.

As promised, a couple of teasers as I'm back and forth to the line. All but one are in 6BR, one is a 6 Dasher.

Reading every word in this thread as I am seriously considering either a custom or an AI myself.
I went through this. Owned custom and AI AT. Always pulled the AI out to shoot. Still my favorite (even though it’s not a “competition rifle”) and now have 2.

waiting for the AT-X chassis to come out do I can put one of ATs in it.

So I got my pre-order in for the AT-X.

I’m still torn over the barrel. to me it looks like the AT-X barrel is a heavier contour than the regular ones, does anyone know what profile it is? And what would the shank size be? Has to be the AT/AX one not the larger AXMC correct?

There were several other users in the “other” AT-X thread that offered up wanting to buy the factory 6.5 barrel off anyone who wanted to sell it so I doubt you’ll have any issues selling it off.

I think you made a food choice. Money well spent and I doubt you’ll regret it. AI makes some of the best riffles I’ve ever shot. I’ve owned several now.

Count me in as a possible buyer for one of those 6.5 barrel take-offs from these AT-X's.

Well about the only thing I’m positive of is that I don’t want 6.5 Creedmoor so if you want to buy it you got it. I’d love to trade barrels for something I’d use. Otherwise I’m looking for makers that have something in stock so when the rifle comes in I can shoot it. I intend to leave the factory 6.5CM barrel unshot as I get it.

Where did you order yours from? I put my order in with mile high the day it was announced.

There we go!!
For AI to take off in the PRS game it has to be 1st. If Impact or Curtis is constantly winning that’s what everyone will gravitate to. But if AI would dominate more shooters would see it as “that what the winners shoot, must be the rifle”

here in SoTex when Morgan & Zach Scurlock were winning everything, AI caught on like wildfires. Then a few of the top shooters jumped on the Impact wagon and many shooters followed.

Did they win? As in 1st place

not 1st loser

Question: I see allot of thumb wrapping which is how I shoot mine also. With the new design is there a thumb shelf of sorts ( rim or angle) or does the thumb float. I love the anarchy thumb rest but with the redesign that look like a no go.

Mk Machining has something that I think that will work. Planning on giving this a try on a Cadex build of mine. Should work on the AT-X..

I put a M40 contour on my AIAT in 6.5CM and have a 308 spun up for it as well in the same Bartlein #14 / M40 contour.

Scott can correct me if I'm wrong but I want to say they are running the heavy AT contour....basically it's a palma contour with a longer neck length area of the barrel and a larger muzzle diameter than the heavy palma.

Got any pics? I am assuming that it clears the NV bridge?

I'll have to see if I can find one in the shop to take a pic of it.

If go to our contour page and scroll down to the palma contours and look at the heavy palma contour that will give you an idea on dimensions as to what it is close to. The quick taper area is longer on the AI and with a bigger muzzle

I think it will clear the nv mount/bridge but honestly haven't checked one. MY AT doesn't have a mount on it....so can't help ya there.

Let me see if I can get a pic of one.

Here are the pics I have that may help. I did not pay particular attention to the barrel / handguard diameter and clearance. It was bad enough I was stalking the team during the event. ;)

My understanding is the AT-X barrels are AI small shank and any AI produced small shank barrel will fit the AT-X. The pictures also seem to show thicker barrels further past the neck than the standard AI profile and a couple with larger muzzle diameters, as Frank stated, and that all clear the handguard / bridge.
