I'm being given a 700 ADL in 270. What should I do with it?

Buddy has a 91' or so era 700 in 270 that he is giving me.
Basic deer setup. Original wood stock and such. I'd like to have the action worked, and rebarreled.
What caliber should I entertain? I don't want anything trendy.
I already have a 300wm, 223,and 308.

No real set goal with this project. Probably just a hybrid setup.

Either stay 270 or 6.5cm. 6.5cm is Definitely not a “trend”.
Think 6.5cm would be the gap I'd need to fill, considering what I currently have?
Can I eaisly do 6.5cm in a long action?

Nothing wrong with the 270win but as mentioned the 6.5-06 is a beast.
I have a ladder ready to be shot with 150 ABLR and H1000 in 270win so im biased.

280AI at 1000 yards can do what 6.5CM does, at 500. Does it without magnum primers, magnum powder charge, or magnum recoil. 280AI is a very versatile round for hogs, to whitetail, to elk.

The last two 270 700's I had were turned into a 6.5-06 medium heavy for my father since he always wanted one and a 280AI mountain rifle for me. No regrets on either.

If you look in PX I suspect you can find what you want, if you actually need or want something, for less than cost to mess with this rifle.

Ya'll always say this, and there ain't never shit there.

"Just get a barely used S&B PM2 from the Px for $700! They pop up all the time!"

There was a Surgeon actioned Hawk Hill barreled action for 1400 today. Guess that "ain't shit" to you.

So, true up that 700. put a Bartlien on it, enlarge the scope mount holes, buy a custom 20 MOA Pic rail, buy a custom recoil lug. Add a custom bolt handle and custom knob Ceracoat it in your favorite color. You will now have over 1400 in your free Rem 700 and less than 50 % resale value.

You don’t have to spend $1400 on upgrades to this rifle, or to buy an $1400 action.

Shoot it and see if it’ll do what you want.

If you want a different caliber, a $400 Criterion profit from NSS will shoot great.

Upgrade it a piece at a time to get it like you want it. It can be a fun relatively cheap project.

See how it shoots with a little lod development and go from there. Last few remington rifles I had shot very well. If it does the 270win rounds out your lineup as well as anything else could.
If it shoots I'd throw it in a chassis or stock then cerkote it.

I have had the same rifle since I was 13. I have killed truck loads of coyotes and deer with it. It will probably end up s 280ai some day.

.25-06 / .280AI would be my choices if one wanted a small bore. But, Nothing like a big bore to lighten up the day. I am thinking, a .35 Whelen which is easy, but for a real rifle, go with a .400 Brown Whelen. Headspaces better than a 400 Whelen and a bit more powder capacity.

If I was building another .30-06 action rifle, I would probably build a 400 Whelen but use .240 Weatherby cases to get the belt to assist with headspacing. That‘s why H&H put a belt on the .375 and its predecessor. The Weatherby case is almost identical in length and capacity as well as having a .473 Inch rimless head.

Shoot it until the barrel is toast.
It probably has the Walker trigger in it, so you should be able to adjust all of the creep and over travel out of it.
It'll adjust down to around 2.75 lbs without being unsafe.

Get some ammo or load for it and it'll shoot very well.

I’ll second this. Maybe replace the stock if that intrigues you

When the barrel is toast, or if you just feel like fiddling with it, then you can do all of the things to it. And being the bolt face/action length combo that it is, the options are endless

Yes you can, you would just need to run a large magazine if you put it in something that takes a detachable magazine. But I would look at a Remage barrel in 6.5-284 Norma over 6.5 Creedmoor. Lapua and Norma make brass for it and you can load it just as hot as 6.5 PRC, or as light as 6.5 Creedmoor, which would give you more versatility.

I'd add a hinged bottom metal or dbm and have myself a nice hunting rifle. If it doesn't shoot well I'd true the action put on a new barrel with whatever caliber you want and have a nice hunting rifle. I'd also probably have the trigger tuned while I was at it with either option.
