Whether you call it a sub or a hoggie or a grinder, where have you found the BEST Cheese Steak?

Mine would be a sub shop that is now closed but from the age of 10 to about 45, the best in the world was Captain Harvey's in Dundalk MD.

I had one once from a street vendor in NY, I remember standing on the street watching him cook up the meat then smother it in cheese. Was pretty good. Pretty sure that's the only time I ever ate one.

Geno's in Philly. Or Pats in Philly. No need to look further.

    You're welcome

    Doc

I had a cheesesteak at Jim's on 4th and south a few months ago in Philly. Was decent, but not a Geno's or Pats. BUT it was only like 3 blocks from the hotel I was staying in and not 2 miles to Geno's.

Another FANTASTIC sandwich in Philly is at Dinics at the Redding market... their roast pork sandwich is fucking outstanding...

I got a cheese steak from a street vendor in Philly about 20 years ago. Worst fucking steak and cheese I ever had.

Best one, was from a guy that now runs a different shop. It was at Camden House of Pizza, Camden, ME, and they called him uncle Jeff. Greek guy who was a former boxing instructor, and an amazing cook. He runs Wiscassett HoP now.

Primantis is still, to this day, the best damn sandwich I've ever had. Never been to Genos or Pats, but I used to spend a lot of time in and around Pittsburgh/Ligonier/Laughlintown. So Primantis was the spot.

Have been to all of the usual suspects in Philthy, and Westtown Meat Market in West Chester is an order of magnitude better.

A local place made damn good ones, cut all their own meat and fresh veggies. To top it off, it was the size of a football.

Unfortunately the place burned to the ground.

    Pittsburg /= Philly...

But Primanti Bro's does make a damn fine sandwich... odd the first time you get it with french fries, cole slaw and tomato on it, but its good. There is one in downtown Indianapolis now too thats just as good.

I'm aware there is a vast difference between Pitt and Philly. But I was under the impression that the original 2 shops were in those two cities.

Definitely was an interesting take on a sandwich, but delicious

I'm not going to claim to be an expert on cheese steak sandwiches but my preference is for Jersey Mike's cheese steak sandwiches. Their restaurants can be found coast-to-coast.

My favorite (but not traditional) is the #44 Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak. Everything tastes good with Frank's Red Hot Sauce.

My apologies if it seems that I'm hijacking this thread with non traditional sandwiches.

It’s already off the rails. A hoagie, grinder, sub, Primantis, and CHEESESTEAK, are all different things anyway.

Sonny’s, on Market at about 3rd in Philly is among my favorites.

    My house

Shaved rib eye soaked and marinated overnight in EVOO and roasted garlic. Add some provolone cheese, sautéed peppers and mushrooms, great salami and a little lettuce to a perfect piece of French bread

Growing up in Philly & suburbs, I found it hard not to find a decent cheesesteak. Most Pizza shops had it down pretty good.

Street carts or food trucks in Philly.

Or any of the big CS restaurants. But street food vendor cheesesteaks in Philly are heaven on a hoagie roll!

Oh yeah... they are in all in places where you can easily get murdered.

I'd add that the Museum of the American Revolution is a nice complement to a cheese steak. Superb museum and totally worth the visit. And is in a neighborhood where you are slightly less-likely to get murdered.

around here, Philly's Best is decent.

I've had Pat's , Geno's and Pete's but I gotta say Lee's Hoagie House . I'm in Greater Philly Area and Lee's hands down . The meat is like none I've tested .
Off subject NJ has the best pizza . I can count on one hand the States I've not been to and can safely say NJ .

Jersey Mike's is likely the best 'commercial' sub. I like the Steak Big Kahuna, with extra peppers and onions. I'v e got near 200 Shore Points.

Nah, the best pizza comes from Manhattan. I think its something in the sweat from the Goomba's fresh off the boat dripping into the crust that gives it a unique flavor. They have the finest mozzarella also. And yeasty crust...almost no one has yeasty crust anymore.

Grilled peppers and onions for mine. I'm not from the east coast, but I've been living here for about 15 years (total) now. Every place around here claims to have the best cheesesteak in __________ (town, county, blah blah), and most of them aren't very good. Jersey Mike's is better than 95% of any I've found.

A coworker and I had to make a day trip to Dirty Jersey a while back, and he insisted on going into Philly to get them from Pat's and Geno's (4 from each) to take back to the shop, I didn't think much of them. Talked to a buddy that grew up in Philly and told him about it, he also said, "that's where the tourists go". Both places had a line of 10-15 people waiting to order.

I never go to that part of the east coast, but honestly roast pork sandwiches look better than 90% of cheese steaks.
You're not missing anything. Unless you have a sincere hate of people (in general) and need to make sure it's still intact.

I really do, I’m pretty well known for that (unfortunately?)

The Carolinas is the farthest north east I’ve been, don’t care much to go further, but I do enjoy a good sammich or NY style pizza.

Camden HoP you say…now that rings a bell. Ever had the bagels there in town?

20 years ago that was probably true, there are tons of better places now.

Personally for me. I want it a certain way.

    Good fatty steak chopped
    Cheese Whiz
    Onions
    Salt and Pepper
    A small amount of A-1
Good crusty bread toasted and buttered.

Pat's and Geno's when in Philly, if you in Philly and want to take a break from eating those greasy hoof meat sandwiches. Go to the Reading Terminal Market to DiNic's and have a roast pork sandwich with provolone and broccoli rabe.

Yes, imo those in the know go for the pork and the Rabe is def required. (y)

Had Geno's once in Philly. Should've crossed the street and had Pat's. But who knows, maybe Pat's sucks too. Went to some mom and pops Italian restaurant outside of Philly. Was the best cheesesteak I've ever had. Went back to make sure, and yep.

I agree, any shop in NJ blows both those places away. Hell, get some velveeta and chop some meat and you replicated both those shops.

no one makes better cheesesteaks than NY/NJ area and everything, save the liberty bell and few works of art pertaining to the rev in the philly museum, sucks. Philly just sucks, absolute $hithole

Philly Flava! 2 stores in Tampa, Florida. Played hockey with the owner for years. Great guy, grew up in Philly.

Someone brought up pizza. Lou Malnatis. I've probably had it delivered or had friends that had here in Atlanta a dozen times. I used to travel a lot and have been to two locations in Chicago. First time it was 1-800-lou-to-go, but of course now you can order on the 'web.

If it’s not Pepe’s New Haven, it’s not pizza.

    Pizza is like sex.

    Good pizza blows your mind.

Shitty pizza is still pretty damn good.
