    There are many different lithium battery technologies.

    There's also many manufacturers, charging algorithms, and failure points.

    Generally they fail because of abuse. Sometimes it's during charging.


    Who wants to let a baggage handler mess with any sort of fragile device? For all we know they punctured a battery by running it over with the truck before they put it in the plane.

    I would be far more uneasy about being in a room full of various lithium-ion and li-po batteries, than in a room full of sealed and properly stored containers of black powder. The latter is impossible to be a threat to anyone, unless somebody is really retarded or acting out of intentional malice.
