You just reminded me of when I used to respond to people who said “I have been doing this for 20 years!” by saying “One year of experience twenty times isn’t the same as 20 years of experience.”What do you want to know I have 10 deployments and 3 fail marriages so I think I am an expert now.

On what not to do?What do you want to know I have 10 deployments and 3 fail marriages so I think I am an expert now.
Get something that can do double duty. Something that looks innocuous if seen. Get a standard issue (for long range stuff) pencil barrel hunting rifle, and put a fixed, steel tubed weaver on that bitch. Get it zeroed at your preferred distance, and learn your holdovers in your head. Bury ammo stashes and fill out an 'under' report (cache) and be done.
That way, "its my dads hunting rifle; it's been in this house for 50 years." So in case some martial law motherfuckers start goin door to door looking for tactical shit or pullin 4473s red dawn style, you dont stand out like a bulldogs ballsack. Use basic, proven stuff. Not standing out in public, or under an inspection, should always be a key consideration.
It's really no different than most typical civilians do. They use what they have at hand. You should already have a standard hunting rifle laying around already anyhow. I never advocated for anything extreme. A plain rifle will do.Pretty pointless.
As Katrina showed, the Uniform hangers will beat up and break arms on old ladies in their hurry to grab an old revolver quicker.
When they start coming it's time to use them or hope to stay alive in the concentration camp.
I'd much rather have my sbr with nv capable and thermal kit.Get something that can do double duty. Something that looks innocuous if seen. 100 percent. “Pest control “It's on a Deere...pretty sure that'll qualify as a tax write-off if you're a farmer.
My M4 A3 Dissipator in 5.56 still has the iron sights on it even though I could remove the carrying handle to use the pic rail underneath for an optic.Iron Sights.

Did you at least leave the ma deuce mounted for the drive?Yeah, but I need to drive an hour and a half away over state lines to do that.

This made me laugh. I had to go the more mediocre route with an M82 which I justify specifically for such an occasion. This is what we use in free America...

W/O software, hardware is just weight.

The problem with many small groups is that when the SHTF for real, a significant number of the women immediately throw themselves at the men they feel are in charge. They understand intuitively that their pussy can buy them safety and security. Tough on marriages and beta males ego though. This made me laugh. After reading all 6 pages I agree… diversify, stockpile, large concrete block home on several acres, generator with large underground propane tank, ballistic film on windows, razor wire, cameras and various other measures. I’m in the process of procuring a PVS27 and a thermal. Most importantly is secrecy balanced with a trustworthy small group. Everyone in my group does a lot of carbine training with and without NV. Then you have to plan to be able to keep your group fed and cohesive. I don’t know if I would’ve gone through with the last part were it not for the fact that I am the only one capable of treating injuries, illness, etc. No one lasts long in a situation like this without competent medical care. Sepsis will kill 5x as many as bullets. I think the only way to get close to “prepared” is to have it be a lifestyle. It’s impossible to guess EXACTLY what will happen, but it’s very possible to predict how most of society will respond.
I look at it as my main hobby. Probably won’t happen, but gives me a responsible excuse for all the equipment and training. It’s been my experience that most really attractive women find security very attractive.
People much smarter than I am have said “mindset will be the most important component”.
Being able to recognize when the time comes and act accordingly will be vital. Having 2k to 3k yards between the world and your shelter along with the ability to engage efficiently at that distance IMO is also high up there. Maybe 800 yards at night. I’d prefer the carbine guys only being responsible for the stragglers.
You just reminded me of when I used to respond to people who said “I have been doing this for 20 years!” by saying “One year of experience twenty times isn’t the same as 20 years of experience.”

I haven't used an M4, so I can't comment on it, but the Aimpoint T2, ACOG, and EXPS3 are all excellent choices. The ACOG is a fixed 4x with awful eye relief, unless you choose the 3.5x ACOGs, which have better eye relief. EoTech has a larger window than the T2, but the T2 has a longer battery life than the Eo.
