Ridge at brass mouth after sizing

....Post crossed when typing and hitting enter. My Hornady prep center died (don't recommend) replaced with Frankford Arsenal Platinum last week. Interesting thought on the mandrel but I have the pin less than 3/16 beyond the die, I'll have to dig into that one deeper. Normally to chamfer it...

Ridge at brass mouth after sizing

Brass has already been fired and preped since it was sized using the Hornady Trimmer. Don't notice a ridge after its fired, just after sizing. When the bullet is seated the die is working of the outside of the case neck. The extra ridge is causing the neck to compress more as compared to a...

Ridge at brass mouth after sizing

Getting puzzled here with a development with my 308 brass. I'm discovering a slight ridge around the outside edge of the mouth of my brass after sizing. It's not much but I can take my thumbnail and catch the ridge rather than a smooth neck. This ridge when discovered can make a bid difference...

Dry eyes and blurred vision behind the scope

Good stuff guys. Regarding tired, it makes a big difference if I go to the range on the weekend verse after work. Working on a computer with a lot of CAD and spreadsheet work does a number on the eyes. Last trip was after work to squeeze in some test loads. DUC: Interesting you mention retain...

Dry eyes and blurred vision behind the scope

Haven't mastered both eyes open behind a scope. Doing better with both eyes open with the pistol and a red dot but behind the rifle I have to close one eye.

Dry eyes and blurred vision behind the scope

Wife had the early cataracts and did the multi focal lens option. Did not go well.

Dry eyes and blurred vision behind the scope

I've been noticing more and more that when I spend longer periods of time behind the scope I start to loose my vision and can't focus on the target. Last weekend I was doing ladder load tests for a new rifle and the blurred vision was getting really bad. Been figuring it's just part of aging...

    Anealing - How often?

Have to admit, it is sort of fun. I do my annealing with the shop dark, minimal light so I can watch the flame and regulate it to get max anneal just shy of metal burning (orange puff) It's sort of like watching a campfire with a cold one in hand.

    Anealing - How often?

Finally bought an Annealeez and love that thing. Went through and was annealing all my multi-fired used brass but do have a question for others that anneal. How often do you anneal your fired brass? I have a bunch of Hornady Factory Match 6.5 brass once fired. Is it worth annealing or wait...

Sierra SMK 175 & Varget loads

I know this has been talked about before but couple searches came up with lot of stuff not looking for and not the right answers. So new rifle in 308 and get to start the ladder load process all over. 26" barrel, 1:10 bolt gun Lapua brass, new Federal match primers Sierra 175gr HPBT Varget...

    .308 Annealing

2nd on the Anealeez and the orange "puff" Shop lights off with single worklight to see what I'm doing Set inner cone of the flame just shy of touching the brass at base of neck, top of shoulder. Keep adjusting the speed slower until you reach the point where you get the orange puff in you flame...

    BTHP vrs tiped bullets

So far I've pretty much only been loading Hornady ELD-Match 140gr bullets for my 6.5 Creedmoor with an occasional test load playing with SMK. The BC numbers look best for the ELD plus I can buy boxes of the exact same load off the shelf so I know what I'm shooting. Last month loaded several...

    308 loads for PRS

Peter, good info, Thanks as that's the kind of bullets and loads I'm looking to work up. Helps shorten the ladder loads by at least starting close to where I need to be.

    308 loads for PRS

Still looking for a burn rate chart that includes AR-Comp and still no-go. Only thing that pops up is an article from 2011 with an alleeged quote from Aliant. Burn Rate Like Varget: Though this is a reformulation of Reloder 15, the burn rate of AR-Comp is slightly faster than Reloder 15...

    308 loads for PRS

I'm curious about burn rate comparisons. AR-Comp is listed as a "Medium slow burning powder" but I can't find it listed on any of the Burn Rate Charts I've found. Varget is just slightly below middle on the slower side for burn rate. Would love so see a chart that shows the relationship between...

    308 loads for PRS

Ran into another argument regarding tip bullets and load length. My previous load crept up a few thousandth and I ended up with 2.847. They were too long for my 7.62 Gen3 mags so bought an AC mag to try. The AC allows longer loads but had two rounds that didn't feel right going into battery and...

    308 loads for PRS

Matt, good info, I understand what you mean. Had to confirm with MDT regarding the AICS mags and my rifle will have "with binder plate" so I 2.870 for max COAL. Regarding loads with Varget, my local powder supplier is having issues getting Varget but I have 12# of AR-Comp on the shelf which is...

    308 loads for PRS

Sierra 175 TMK is another bullet I'm considering also. I know a lot of people like Verget but it's been sort of hit or miss to find here for a while. I use the AR-Comp to load 75gr ELD-M in 223 and as mentioned have about 12# on the shelf. AR is supposed to be the Alliant version of Varget with...

    308 loads for PRS

Interesting point regarding the length and tip on the ELD (no pun fun) MDT AICS metal mags with binder plate @ 2.870 Looking into different metal mags for my 6.5 as the magazine is so short I'm over .040 of the lands. Pmag gen II but that's a different topic.
