How good is the Vortex Fury 5000 AB?

I have the Vortex Fury 5000AB model. I got to compare it (on the side of a mountain) with one of the newer SIG laser / ballistic binos...don't remember the exact model number and some older Swaros range finding only binoculars. We (the SIG's owner) both agreed that the glass on the Vortex was...

    22i versus 34 etc for hunting ?

I think it depends on what kind of hunting you are talking about. For Eastern style deer hunting or predator hunting the 22i was my choice. But for mountain hunting or horseback hunting it wouldn’t be good at all.

    New 6mm Advanced Rifle Cartridge

Well I started with the AGB fully closed off. I also was using a brass catcher, so I didn’t really tune it to eject at a particular “time”. I was shooting suppressed. First shot bolt didn’t move. Turned it open 3-4 clicks. Again didn’t move. Another 3-4 clicks and it was ejecting...

    New 6mm Advanced Rifle Cartridge

Just put 20 rounds of Hornady ELDM through a Proof 20” CF to zero, break in, and tune AGB. Used E-Lander mag. So far so good; 100% reliable and very promising accuracy.

    Dual Nox 18s/MH25s

And further question regarding identifying coyotes…. Would you rather head mount a Nox 18 or 35?

Red Dot on CCW Pistol. Do you guys use them?

I came to Frank’s place to learn about the art and science of precision rifle shooting. If some of the “information” in this thread is any indication, I’m going to have to radically increase my BS filter in those threads…. I know, I know, it’s the interwebs (a great place for those with no...

Red Dot on CCW Pistol. Do you guys use them?

Scott Jedlinski of the Modern Samurai Project is one of the recognized experts on the subject. He has lots of good info out there:

Red Dot on CCW Pistol. Do you guys use them?

If you are willing to put the work into refining your presentation and can realize or even need the performance enhancement; then yes, MRDS equipped pistols can provide advantages. Shooters with advancing age who have vision problems and maintaining threat focus, as 308 mentioned, are two big...

    CCW Zero Distance

But back to the OP, if you can zero your MRDS equipped pistol to keep them all on a 1” paster at 10 yards or in the X / 10 ring of a B8 at 25, AND CAN SHOOT THE DIFFERENCE IN REAL LIFE, then you should go work on other skills necessary to keep you alive and well in this world. Eat healthy, get...

    CCW Zero Distance

I am well aware of the dynamics and distinctions. But I was attempting to refute the specious and oft repeated assertion that you won’t need or have time to use your sights in a gunfight. Maybe, maybe not. But I sure know it can be done and done well. And if you need to apply this...

    CCW Zero Distance

I’ve worked with and talked to enough (CONUS LE) who most definitely used their sights to great effect. One almost could count the striations on it. I’ve also seen and talked to those who didn’t “remember” or couldn’t say. Their performance reflected it. Here’s the thing. If you really...

    CCW Zero Distance

Some good stuff above…and not. There are really good arguments for zeroing pistol MRDS at 10 (Scott Jedlinski) or maybe 15 yards (SIG Academy?) or 8.78 meters or whatever someone special (/sarcasm) says. Such as: The trajectory (as noted above) is most realistic for pistol engagement...

Hunting & Fishing solar panels ?

I ran a Goal Zero Nomad 20 and battery (can’t remember name but 35) for a month in a remote hunting camp charging phones and Garmins. It worked great and was better than what others had. Everyone borrowed its use.

Novseke Afghan, DDM4 V7 SLW, 243 WSSM, or Precision Firearms AR

I have a Gen 1 Noveske Afghan in the Vltor VIS upper. It’s not the lightest but it has been the most reliable, accurate, repeatable semiauto I own. If I had to grab one to go out of the safe it likely would be it.

PRS Talk Understanding your Mental Game

"Focus on the process, not the outcome." Pat McNamara has a good presentation about this and echos much of what has already been said about mastering fundamentals, use of timers (beep = "you may begin now"), et cetera. Another way to think of it came to me when I was hunting at a friend's...

Plane crash beautify filmed and escaped

Not buying it. Besides the multiple camera angles...(and the hike back to the plane to recover them while in "survival" mode?) He never really feared for his life, or the cameras would have been jettisoned / abandoned. If you are so worried about having to bail out of an airplane that...
