Im a newbie and need some opinions

Re: Im a newbie and need some opinions fdkay is right on the money! Great analysis. the key to his comments, IMO, is 'looking for better groups'. If this will eventually be used for duty purposes, his suggestions would be the way to go, on a build. I don't know what the liability issues...

    anybody seen these dbm's?

Re: anybody seen these dbm's? Pat, I think you're correct. They look like the first run Atlasworx. Deadnoise, You may want to take a look at these, from PT&G http://www.midwayusa.com/product/528435/...-aluminum-black

Confirming ammo count on used 338

Re: Confirming ammo count on used 338 I don't know of any way to confirm round count. Probably check headspace and bore scope. With that you get a good look at the condition. You may also want to slug the barrel to evaluate uniformity.

    badger brake install

Re: badger brake install I used their Thruster mode, which works really well. If your barrel is already threaded, make sure the thread pitch is the same as a Badger offering. The bore of the muzzle brake may have to be opened. You could index it with shims, but the best wya would be having...

Re: 338 lapua guys. Please look. I used a Krieger heavy varmint at 28" finished length with a 9.35 twist. Works really well

Gunsmithing Atlas Detachable Bottom Metal/AI Mag Problems

Re: Atlas Detachable Bottom Metal/AI Mag Problems The problem with the Atlasworx system is the recess for the release lever is not cut high enough, and the release lever is too short. Once you get the new lever, find someone to mill the notch about .09 higher, re-install the lever. You may...

    Air dry Cerakote?

Re: Air dry Cerakote? Air cure works well on barreled actions, stocks, scopes, etc. It's easy to apply, just follow the simple instructions......Blast with nothing finer than 120grit AO,Clean the parts well, pre-heat to remove or id any oils or contaminants, and spray. Too much material...

So I'm going to buy my own rifle!

Re: So I'm going to buy my own rifle! If this is going to be used as a duty weapon, make sure the Department doesn't have any specific guidelines or requirements for components and accuracy, from a liability perspective. I suggest the shorter barrel for maneuverability, and a better stock...

.338 Lapua or .338 Rem Ultra

Re: .338 Lapua or .338 Rem Ultra I've got the Lapua, built on a Remington action, and love it! Works great, shoots great! Ammo is probably a little higher, but if you reload, it brings the overall cost down substantially. I use both Lapua and Jamison brass, and find them to both perform...

Gunsmithing Trigger for rem 700 (no serious smithing)

Re: Trigger for rem 700 (no serious smithing) Timney is a good choice. With its wide trigger shoe, you may have to shave the trigger shoe a little to prevent it rubbing on the bottom metal. I have had 2 with the M5 that had to be shaved, and others that fit without mods. If you order direct...

    Gunsmithing gunsmith advise

Re: gunsmith advise That really depends on how light you want your trigger. If it's a field gun, 14oz is too light, IMO. Sear angle adjustment is the proper method.

    300. Win mag contour and twist!!

Re: 300. Win mag contour and twist!! You can use the 11.25, but with the 220's you'd be right on the edge. Go with the 10 twist....you'll be happy I recommend at least a #5. What are you looking for in an overall weight? What stock are you going to use?

Gunsmithing MTU or M24/M40 for 7RemMag

Re: MTU or M24/M40 for 7RemMag 26" will be fine. You'll get full powder burn at 24", but lose some velocity at theat length. Barrel contour boils down to weight and what your use is. If you're going to hump it, you may want to save on weight and stick to a thinner profile.

    Timney / Badger M5 Fit

Re: Timney / Badger M5 Fit You may have to trim the trigger shoe. I've had to trim a couple, and one I did not.

Gunsmithing arrrrrrrrr. red loctite on scope base screws.

Re: arrrrrrrrr. red loctite on scope base screws. You might try a steel rod of appropriate size to cover the screw head. Heat the rod enough to allow the heat transfer to soften the loctite. I have used acetelyne, and it works well. Time varies, I guess on how much loctite they used.

    recoil padding

Re: recoil padding Try Limbsaver. See if they will work for you. I use their standard on the heavy cliber rifles, and they tone down the felt recoil real well. http://www.limbsaver.com/2010/products/firearms/recoil_pads/index.php#precision
