    First time shame on you….

In June 1979, 41 sperm whales washed up near Florence. I was living there at the time and had a summer job with the Forest Service. We went down to the beach to see the whales, it was sad and awe inspiring to see their size. I remember thinking the people pulling on a rope trying to drag them...

    Introducing kids to shooting

Frist time my oldest son did any shooting was about a month before he turned 4 years old. I had just gotten a 1911 in .45 and we went to my parents place to shoot. I took a 22 revolver as he had been saying he wanted to shoot too. The 22 was too heavy for him to shoot by himself so I helped him...

    First time prairie dog hunting

Used to meet up with friends in central Wyoming to shoot P-dogs. Had a rancher who let us shoot on his land and land he leased, and we covered a lot of country. Generally we had 4 to 8 of our kids with us which changed up how we set up to shoot so we could get them into shooting positions...

    Chuck Mawhinney passed away today.

I met Chuck about 1980 or so when he worked for my (then to be) father in law at the Mapleton Ranger District (USFS). He and my FIL would make homemade wine and then sample it, well more than just sample it. He told me about making homemade beer and if a teaspoon of sugar was needed for...

    Guy tells a hunting story

Long, long ago when I lived in the Denver area was out with some friends shooting p-dog on a ranch. Owner comes along to talk to us. About 125 yards away a dog stands up and we start taking turns shooting at it offhand but can't hit it. Friend has a Marlin 94 in 357 but is shooting 38 spl...

That MRI you desperately need? 2 year wait and ten times as expensive.

Helium shortages/cost increase has a direct impact on the manufacturing of semiconductors. When I was in that industry, shortages were a concern but we never ran out, just had to pay more for it, a lot more.

Not a large enough area to justify using something like this. Also I would have to drive 60 miles each way to rent one. By the time I picked it up and returned it, I would probably have more time in driving than it took me to remove the old flooring.

So true. Working on the latest remodel project (reference the retired guy thread). Hardwood floor with old linoleum glued to it. Then on top of that was 1/8" plywood nailed down and vinyl flooring on top of that. And going the other direction is this. So far I have counted six...

What is the weather like in your AO today?

As posted previously, lot of high water around here and it happens about every winter/rainy season. Seems some people can't read high water signs and don't have sense enough to figure out water is getting deeper as they drive into it. Let's drive down a flooded road

What is the weather like in your AO today?

We have had 9+ inches of rain since last Thursday, even more in the coastal mountains. River went from about 12 feet to 35 feet, 5 over flood stage. High water on this road is normal in the winter but not this deep. Fortunately most of the low lying ground under water is pasture or hay...

What is the weather like in your AO today?

We are a balmy 46 degrees and wet, very wet. Another inch of rain overnight. Local rivers are pushing flood stage. Normal winter flow level on the Coquille is 8 to 10 feet. Flood stage is 30 feet and the river level is just under that.

    Maggie’s The Retired Guy Thread

Years ago I worked with a guy who had a count down to his retirement on his phone. He was quick to pull it out and tell people just how much longer he would be caring about work.

If you can sign up for Health Savings Account (not an annual use it or lose it flexible spending account), the money you put in it can be used to cover medical expenses after you retire. I had a HSA for 15 years or so, put money it in pre-tax and when I retired had north of $25k in the account...

Southern Oregon coast. From the bottom up they are ling cod, black rockfish and there is a copper in there. All good eating fish. Lings are in the 5 to 7 lb range but can go up to 40+ lbs. Others are 2 to 5 lbs. Lots of fun on lighter gear. Probably toss back 20+ fish per trip. In the...

    Maggie’s The Retired Guy Thread

I retired in June 2021. Was at a point in life dealing with work that I just said screw it, I don't need this anymore. Now I wonder how I have enough time to get things done. Since retiring I have added a covered front porch, remodeled an area off the master bedroom to expand the bathroom and...

Explanation of SCOTUS decision Not the end of the legal process. Just a ruling that it will proceed through the legal process in a normal manner. Actually allows this Bevis case to be combined with others.

    Gun talk at work

When living/working in SE Idaho, guns and hunting where common topics at work for a lot of employees. It was just part of life in that area. When I became president of a 1500 member gun range, I had a lot of people would come talk to me about guns and stuff at work, either as I was in the...
