Gunsmithing Question: Hermes Engraver for barrel markings: which bit

Thank you for the pictures. Those are pretty much the results I was getting. I was wondering if I could get it to go deeper.

Gunsmithing Question: Hermes Engraver for barrel markings: which bit

Hi, I just bought a motorized hermes pantograph. Its the same as this, only older Gravograph - IM3 - Engraving Pantograph I was playing with it without the motor on and it worked fairly well. I wasn't having great success on stainless barrels stock with the motor running the motor. I...

    338 Lapua Magnum Custom Build

Since you are .930 at the muzzle go with the 3/4 thread. It is significantly easier to do cerakote or gun kote then park or blue. The deviant action is stainless with a steel bolt so you couldn't blue it anyway. You can make your own oven to cure the finish out of an old locker...

    Gunsmithing Who predrills their chambers?

Just wondering who predrills their chambers? I'm considering trying it. Also thinking about maybe running a boring bar after the drill to get everything concentric- maybe an unneeded step? I currently take small cuts, shut everything down, clean, lubricate and do it again. It works...

Gunsmithing going from Badger to Surgeon DBM inlet?

You are slowing down the process- they will do your stock when they have the machine set up for it. That's the wait. Throw it in a box, enclose a letter and UPS it. They will email you an invoice, call them back and pay it. All done.

Gunsmithing going from Badger to Surgeon DBM inlet?

I send mine straight to McMillian. Depending on when they have the fixture in the mill you may wait a few weeks, but they do an awesome job.

    Gunsmithing Remington issue

I would send it back to Remington. If you wanted to fix the canted lug, unscrew the barrel, realign it and re-torque it. to align the screw holes, you'll need to open them up to 8-40- that may prove difficult with the amount those are off. The mark is on the barrel tenon- it has nothing to...

Gunsmithing Cerakote on a Deviant action- question

I want to thank everyone for their time and responses. Long story short: coated the rifle and bolt handle in cerakote, the bolt body in gunkote- worked like a champ and looked pretty bad ass. I ordered a bunch of microslick as well. Didn't get here until the rifle was coated. Next time.

Gunsmithing Any 'smiths with Weatherby Mark 5 experience?

I owned maybe a dozen mark 5s over the years. I had a few wood stock guns that shot like crap. I used to bed the lug and throw some shim stock in the foreend to make a pressure point for the barrel. It worked OK. It was my go to move on wood stock hunting rifles that didn't shoot well. I...

Gunsmithing Best way to modify a fiberglass stock

If it is a McMillan stock send it to them to have it inletted. Whenever they have the cnc machine set up for your stock, they will run it. Sometimes wait is only two or three weeks, longest I had to wait was 8 weeks.

    Barrel length vs. velocity

I just began working on loads for a 22"- I got 2831 fps with a 120 Scenar L shooting .199-.225" at 100yards. the 140 SMK loads I tried were real slow, 2470 was the fastest- it was uber accurate. I still have some load development to do. Powder was Varget- CCI benchrest primers

Gunsmithing Indicating Rods, Ranging Rods and Grizzly Rods

Thanks, I thought I was losing my mind. I have a science background which is why I tried to check the repeatability. I've actually tried it 3 and 4 times in a row and couldn't get it the same. I've had better repeatability by dialing the ends with range rods for what its worth.

Gunsmithing Indicating Rods, Ranging Rods and Grizzly Rods

The think the criticism about repeatability comes from the accuracy of the indicators used and the lathe bearings. All of my .0001" indicators say they are accurate to within .0002". Over 2" of the chamber end you can theoretically be .0004" out. Keep in mind I am not a machinist- they love...

Gunsmithing Indicating Rods, Ranging Rods and Grizzly Rods

Manson lists them in his catalog. Normally his pilots are secured via an e-clip. This is a superior method to the little screw PTG uses, however, it is a pain in the ass to deal with. Greg Tannel, GTR tooling, I think sells them as well.
