16x is going to be a better all around usable scope. I don't know all the details of your rifle but for a 308 I would rather have a 10x or 12x. Research field of view. Usually the higher the magnification the less FOV.

Re: "Dark" glass Maybe they have different lens coatings. I believe some military spec glass is darker because of the anti reflective properties of the coatings used specifically for military contracts. Are the lens coatings the same color?
