Mitutoyo & Starrett, interchangably. I found several for pennies on the dollar thanks to Craigslist, usually machine shops going under or estate sales. I've procured seldom-used calipers and tons of other indicators/calipers/depth gauges the same way.
Manson Reamers has a nice crowning tool. It's geared for the professional user who will be recutting many crowns, hence the cost is a bit steep. Having said that, it cuts one of the nicest crowns I have seen and does so without having to remove the barrel & chucking it up into a lathe.
If the upper to barrel fit is loose, I use stainless shim stock (.001) on the barrel extension and Loctite 640 to hold everything together. If the fit is fairly tight, I still use just the 640 to hold everything in place. I also face the upper to square everything up. There are many ways, as...
I haven't had this issue with Remingtons, but I sure as heck have had them with old Mausers. I've used a spring-loaded center punch on some recalcitrant pins that refused to budge, even when using the "bigger hammer". The "shock" of the spring loaded punch sometimes is enough to budge the pin...
And stay away from polishing the feedramp. Please. I've seen more over-polished feedramps in 1911's than I care to in my shop, and if you aren't very-and I do mean very-careful you can destroy the proper geometry that is needed for proper feeding and functioning. If it continues, send it back...
Re: lapping scope bases vs. bedding to receiver Cameron, that makes sense. Especially regarding the unifying aspects of the epoxy base to the receiver, I now "get it". This is the way it should go. Thanks again to everyone for all the fine help.
Re: lapping scope bases vs. bedding to receiver Thanks for all of the replies, but I think something is getting lost in translation. I'm not talking at all about lapping rings, I do that regardless. I'm specifically speaking to the base to receiver fit, nothing to do with the scope rings...
Forgive me, I am new to the bolt-gun game so bear with me on my question. In looking at all the posts regarding bedding scope bases, has anyone ever taken a couple thousandths off the "high" side of the base to get it in alignment to the receiver, instead of the whole bedding process? Seems to...
Re: C.A.T. M-4 Tool Opinions? One must be careful about "polishing" anything on the bolt. I suppose as long as you don't polish to the point of changing the geometry of the thing, then you are GTG. But, be careful. Look into SLiP 2000 Carbon Killer as a cleaning solution, I first read about...
