If you ever get around to making the extensions, make a bunch of extras... I could do custom barrels for these guns with a bolt, an extension and a blank...
I have cut the tail end off of several live rounds to get rid of the live primer and the powder. There's not really any heat or sparks to worry about while cutting brass...
The largest gas block diameter is typicaly 15/16". The largest diameter under the handguards is typically 1.050" to clear a gas tube coming out of the gas block.
I can tell you that it won't. That is a lot of freebore for a 260 to shoot vld's from a magazine. Pull out the spacer plates from the mags, weld up the holes and you will get close.
I have done stuff like that, but you obviously need the muzzle to be at least 0.875" to accomplish that. Here is an integrated Troy mount on a 300Whisper barrel I did years ago:
Yes, many times. They are uually within 2-3 tenths. Realistically, there is probably nothing gained beyond a 5 tenths dial-in so it would not matter if you removed and re-installed the rod. Most of the guys with long reach indicators are only able to dial in to 5 tenths.
Im assuming that stepped shoulder at the receiver face is what stops the barrel from screwing in too deep and the differential insert has different pitch threads inside it than the receiver has. Then you can time the barrel by turing the insert in or out of the receiver and tightening the barrel...
It is my opinion that truing the receiver will only show an improvement if you using a premium quality barrel. If you are not going to rebarrel, your gains from truing will be very small. You could set the factory barrel back after truing and get some real accuracy gains, but you would then be...
The currently produced actions are fine, especially if you are going to be truing it anyways. I like the older actions. They spent more hand-work time on them smoothing out the sharp edges and actually polishing and bluing them. The SPS are sandblasted and black oxided. The old polished and...
I have done a few just like this as well. Stick a mag base indicator on your bed that measurse the carriage travel. Better yet, make yourself a micrometer adjustable carriage stop.
I have been dialing in with range rods for years. Recently, I made up a set of rods that are like the grizzly range rods, but my rods retain the pilot from rotating so that i don't introduce any pilot wall thickness runout into the equation. I hang a plumb bob and use an interapid tenths...
With tight thread fits, keep some lube in there to fight galling. I routinely cut threads to an interference fit and then finish lap the barrel and receiver together. With such a thread fit, I never leave them dry because they will gall on you the first chance they get!
The AI gauges have a completely different SHOULDER angle. While the AI is shorter by a bit, the angle is different. The only ACCURATE way to measure chamber depth is with a gauge using the proper angle. If you are trying to save money by not buying all the proper tools for the job, get some...
