Gunsmithing How difficult would this be?

Re: How difficult would this be? So would that mean that I would need a whole new bolt? Are there any other issues or, I guess, does changing calibers from a non-magnum caliber such as .308 to a magnum like 7mm WSM present a host of problems or is it a pretty common thing that gunsmiths do?

Gunsmithing How difficult would this be?

When the time comes to replace the barrel on my Rem. 700, I am considering changing calibers. Currently the rifle is .308 Win. If I were to change, I would like to go to 7mm WSM. Are there any potential pitfalls in going from .308 to 7mm WSM? Is changing calibers just a matter of changing...

Gunsmithing Accurize the bolt or replace it?

Re: Accurize the bolt or replace it? All good stuff, thanks. I've got a lot to learn about this but its a process and its ongoing. Thanks again.

Gunsmithing Accurize the bolt or replace it?

I recently got a Rem 700 SPS in .308. I'm planning on putting some coin into this rifle over time. Just put a Nikon Monarch 5-20X44 on it (it ain't a Nightforce but i'm not rich either), next step is a H-S Precision Pol. Sniper stock, green camo me thinks. Then its going to be time to look at...

Standard primers versus match and BR prmers

Re: Standard primers versus match and BR prmers Thats a pretty good plan. I usually pick a primer to start with, figure out the best powder charge and then just throw in diff. primers to see which does the best. I'm fairly new to reloading and one of the first things I learned is that there...

Standard primers versus match and BR prmers

Re: Standard primers versus match and BR prmers I was doing load development with IMR 8208 XBR for my Rem. 700 .308. I was using CCI BR-2 primers and could barely get under an inch. I threw in some CCI 200s with the same charge and it tightened up a bit. I was later messing with some IMR...

    Powder brands?

Re: Powder brands? Wow no Accurate fans, any particular reason? I use Accurate 2015 in my best .223 load for my AR. I've shot 5/8 moa groups at 100 yds with it.

Need more powder ideas for .308 since...

Re: Need more powder ideas for .308 since... Thanks a lot guys, since IMR 4895 is readily available I'll probably start with that. 4064 is also on Gander's shelf so theres another option. I'm a year round shooter and really do'nt want the headache of a really temp. sensitive powder...

Need more powder ideas for .308 since...

Re: Need more powder ideas for .308 since... IMR 4895 is readily available at gander mtn. which is about the only place here to get any supplies. A friend's dad has gotten very good results with it so I was eyeing it already. How temp. sensitive is it?

Need more powder ideas for .308 since...

Re: Need more powder ideas for .308 since... You're probably right and I wouldn't really worry as much about the hazmat fee if I were buying an 8 lb keg but I don't want to buy 8lbs until I have a load worked up and the hazmat fee stings a bit more when you just buy a lb or 2 but you are...

Need more powder ideas for .308 since...

Finding IMR8208 or Varget is like finding a surfboard shop in Nebraska. The vast consensus seems to be that the favorites for .308 are the IMR8208 and Varget, well, I cannot find them around here (Indy) as our selection of places to look for supplies sucks bad so i need some more ideas to try...

    Rem 700 mag length question

I recently bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint. I haven't started working up a load yet but thats right around the corner. I checked the OAL of some factory rounds that i'm using to get the brass (Winchester) and its 2.700. When I read about other peoples loads the OAL is usually never below...

Rifle Scopes any experience with these scopes?

Leupold VX-II 6-18x40 or Nikon Monarch 5-20x44. Surprisingly, I couldn't find a review of that particular Leupy. I would love to know how those 2 scopes stack up against each other. And how they stack up to the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 Tactical. Opinions?

Rifle Scopes Center Point Precision Optics

Re: Center Point Precision Optics I have that exact optic on my AR but it is only a stopgap until I can get something better. The reason I got it in the first place was a bud gave it to me for 50. Mine has actually been pretty amazing for what it is. zero has been dead on for quite a while...

Rifle Scopes seems like the more I read the worse it gets!

Re: seems like the more I read the worse it gets! You're probably right about that. I don't want one for cool factor though, I want to learn to estimate range with it, and get good at doing so. Really, I guess, a mildot reticle with moa adjustments really shouldn't matter because you use...

Rifle Scopes seems like the more I read the worse it gets!

Well, I just got a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308. I took it out yesterday to sight it in and was pleased with the rifle. The garbage scope that came on it is another story. I knew it would suck but it was still a good deal so I figured at least I could get shooting while saving for better...

    Gunsmithing New project, need advice

Re: New project, need advice Thanks for the info but i'm 100% certain that its not too much of a " man gun" for me. I like to shoot a gun that kicks every now and then and have shot many that do. In looking at recoil tables, it doesn't look much if any worse than a good, strong 12 gauge, and...

Rifle Scopes Which one would YOU pick and why?

Re: Which one would YOU pick and why? my plans for this rifle are basically 100-1000 yds. Granted, most of my shooting will be 1-400, I want something that can perform at distance too for those special occasions.

Rifle Scopes Which one would YOU pick and why?

I'm looking for a scope to go on a Rem.700 SPS Varmint .308. I've pretty much narrowed it to 2 (maybe 3) options...Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 mildot or a SWFA SS 20x, the maybe is a Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21x40. Opinions...
